3 A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners: On February 13th, two pro-abortion bills, like the bill passed in New York, and one antiabortion bill were introduced in Springfield as noted below: Reproductive Health Act: House Bill 2495 and Senate Bill 1942 Repeals the 1975 abortion legislation and if passed, will: Repeal the Partial Birth Abortion ban which would allow late-term abortions; Repeal criminal penalties imposed on doctors who offer abortions; Lift disciplinary penalties for physicians who provide abortions; Remove regulations on clinics that provide abortions which would allow non-doctors to perform abortions; Guarantee more funding for abortions by mandating private insurance plans in Illinois to cover abortions on the same basis as contraception, fertility and maternity care. Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act: House Bill 2467 and Senate Bill 1594 Repeals the 1995 Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act and if passed, will: Repeal parental notification for a minor to obtain an abortion where physicians must notify a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian of an underage girl forty-eight hours before performing an abortion. Illinois Anti-Infanticide Act: House Bill 2384 This bill is sponsored by 118 th District State Rep. Patrick Windhorst. If passed, this bill will: Prohibit abortion after an unborn child is viable, except to save the life or serious physical health of the mother. The two pro-abortion bills clearly ease regulations on the availability of abortions, the timing in which abortions are still permitted in Illinois, and guarantee more funding for abortions in our State. The two pro-abortion bills have no regard for the lives of the most innocent and vulnerable human beings among us; the unborn. The Anti-Infanticide Act (HB 2384) is an anti-abortion bill that safeguards an unborn child that is deemed viable. I implore you to take time this week to contact your State Legislators (Representatives and Senators) to make them aware of your position on these three bills. Our legislators need to hear that we will not stand for the easing of restrictions that currently exist pertaining to abortions in our State, and that we want to see life protected at all stages. If you do not know who your State Representative and State Senator is, the Illinois Policy Institute has an easy-touse internet address that allows you to input your home address and the site will then identify your legislators. The web address is: Thank you for advocating on behalf of our Catholic belief that all life has value, and that it begins at conception, and must be safeguarded at all stages. In the Peace of Christ, Fr. Brad P.S. Waterleaf, which does tremendous advocacy work on behalf of the value of life for women and men considering abortion, provided some of the information included in this letter. 8 The Logic of Being Catholic by Dr. Ray Guarendi Thursday, March 28th Dr. Ray Guarendi shares his story of how logic led him home to the Catholic Church. He found out that, contrary to his Protestant misunderstandings, the Church is coherent and never contradicts herself. Dr. Ray explains how the answers to his objections to Catholicism were both Biblical and believed by the earliest Christians. Explore the logic that led him to the fullness of truth. Dr. Ray shows the logic of Catholicism with great clarity and humor! Joseph - East Peoria, IL This may be the most convincing talk I've ever heard about the truths of the Catholic faith! Lectio Divina will take place from 7:00-8:00pm in Room 216 of the Ministry Center on Thursdays during Lent (3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, and 4/11). 11 Saint Vincent de Paul The heart of Jesus preaching is the Beatitudes. They speak of basic attitudes of being and dispositions in life. Vincentians are Beatitude people: they opt for the Beatitudes that confront them with decisive choices concerning earthly goods. The Beatitudes purify their hearts in order to teach them to love God above all things. Vincentians understand Pope John Paul II s words: The Beatitudes are a call to action. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, call: Transitional Housing Ministry The Transitional Housing Ministry currently supports four homeless families including four single adult women and a total of nine children. Your donations in the pink envelopes continue to support the efforts of the mentors to provide food and living accommodations, and could not be more appreciated.
