4 January 14, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 4 A Farewell Letter from Father Milota Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul, Thank You! As I depart Saints Peter and Paul to take leave to care for my ailing mother, I wanted to take a moment to thank all those who have been so supportive over these last 10 ½ (truly 14 ½) years that I have served Saints Peter and Paul, first as pastor and before that, as parochial vicar. I have pondered what I should write to you and say to you as I depart. There would be different approaches: reminiscences of what has transpired over the last years accomplishments and regrets wise counsel for the future sharing of humorous anecdotes; however, none of these seem sufficient or becoming. The most apt sentiment is gratitude. First, gratitude to our Almighty Father in heaven and our Lord s Blessed Mother. Life has its joys and sorrows. When one recognizes the working of the Lord in the moments and hours of each day, these joys and sorrows become opportunities to draw closer to the one who is Love and Mercy. Our God Himself showed us that the highest priority in this world must not be good name or wealth or human respect, but the joy and peace only Christ can give and which he gives even in the midst of trial and change. Praised be Jesus Christ! Second, gratitude to all of you who have given good example of faith and hope and love not that we ever give a perfect example until the next life but an example of people striving to follow the Lord and love Him and our neighbor with one s whole self. There are so many who have sacrificed time and effort and talent and treasure to make sure their children are brought to receive our Lord each and every Sunday to keep faith in the Lord in time of difficulty to support what they know is right even in the midst of great peer pressure to the contrary. Some of you have supported the efforts of this parish to renew a sense of the sacred in the Liturgy, orthodox teaching in the school and Religious Education program, defense of the sanctity of human life at every stage and have done so even at the cost of friendships and social standing. I want you to know that your example has not gone unnoticed by me or, more importantly, our Lord Himself. I must believe that your devotion has or will be rewarded! Third, gratitude for the tremendous support that many of you have shown to me during this time in which I have been and continue to care for my ailing mother. Your generosity especially in these last weeks as I prepare to live with my parents once again and supply an apartment for this purpose has been humbling and overwhelming. Thank you! Union with the Almighty My goal in departing upholds the same principle which I understood as the purpose of my role as priest and pastor. Indeed, my purpose in taking this temporary leave reciprocates the same gift which my mother sought to give me all of her life: Heaven. The reason I must walk with my mother at this difficult time is that I hope to assist her at this critical moment in her life on her final road to our Lord and union with Him. This is the same gift I desire for all of you. During these last 10 ½ years, I hope that you have seen that I have worked hard, if not always perfectly, for the spiritual welfare of the parish and the individual members of the parish. The goal and purpose of every parish of our faith is heaven eternal union with Christ. The danger of any venture involving human beings is that more proximate goals supersede this ultimate goal. Our salvation lies in God made man and, yet, human beings tend to reduce our faith to a human activity with mundane goals of the here and now leaving behind the divine purpose for which we were created. 5 January 14, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 5 (...continued from page 4) Our liturgy reminds us of this divine purpose for which we can be forgetful immersed in our, needless to say important, everyday concerns. Put simply: we all need to know that we are not in this alone but have a divine, all-powerful, allknowing and all-loving God who guides and supports us who gives us life. Life here is not all about us our wishes and desires having our every whim and concern addressed it is about obtaining eternal life and joy in God s kingdom. Apology and Forgiveness The manner in which I have served you and serve my family has eternal repercussions for me as well. Many of you can explain to me far more poignantly than I to you the occasions in which I have failed and, I pray, also some occasions in which I have succeeded in the goal of assisting God s people on their pilgrimage to heaven. Although it has become tradition for a pastor or other leader to make his apology to anyone he has hurt during his tenure, I do beg this forgiveness now not out of obligation but with heartfelt concern for those who had been entrusted to me as pastor of Saints Peter and Paul. Saints Peter and Paul Parish is a large parish with many differing points of view, needs, expectations and activities; however, this must never be an excuse for a pastor to become curt or treat with a lack of charity any individual. For anyone I may have hurt in this manner, I express true sorrow and beg forgiveness for these transgressions. In particular, I ask forgiveness should my actions have harmed the faith of any of God s people. Although I cannot apologize to anyone who was offended by the presentation of the authentic teaching of the Church whether moral, liturgical or canonical, I do apologize if, at any time, this was presented in a way which lacked charity or respect. One must preach the truth but in love. Finally, our Lord instructed us to forgive not 7 times but 77 times. Hence, please know that I understand that human relationships are complex and, so, there are many reasons we, human beings, say and do things in any particular moment reasons seen and unseen. Hence, I also forgive anyone who is feeling they may have wronged me during my time here. Please seek also the forgiveness of Christ in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Fondness for Saints Peter and Paul I will cherish many beautiful and precious memories from my 14 ½ years here at Saints Peter and Paul from the wonderful answers given by children at school or Religious Education Masses to the opportunities to be present at moments of great sorrow and joy in the lives of parishioners to the long confession lines and many generous cards, notes and gifts received as I depart this special parish. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. Although I will begin remembering my new parishioners in my prayers, please know that Saints Peter and Paul will always have a warm place in my heart. 11 January 14, 2018 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 11 Mark s Gospel Corner The liturgical calendar for Sunday readings follows a three year cycle: A, B, and C, beginning with the first Sunday of Advent. In the first year, A, the Sunday Gospel is predominately taken from Matthew. In the second year, B, it is taken from Mark, and in the third year, C, Luke. John s Gospel is read during the special liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter, as well as portions of the summer. This is liturgical year B, so we will be focusing on the Gospel of Mark. Mark s Gospel is referred to as the first catechism. Why? In the Rite of Acceptance of Catechumens (those who are preparing for baptism or reception into the Church), in what is referred to as the Inquirers First Acceptance of the Gospel, the book of the Gospels is handed to each catechumen as the priest says, This is not the passing on of a book, but the embrace of a way of life, patterned on the Good News. Acceptance of the Gospel is the principal expression by the inquirer that they indeed wish to embrace a life of discipleship. Mark s Gospel, in particular, spells out what it means to be a disciple in a very clear way, particularly the section between 8:22 and 10:52. Prior to this point, although the demons and the reader of the Gospel recognize who Jesus is, the disciples are blind to His true identity. Beginning in Mark 8:22, with the miracle of the blind man of Bethsaida, Jesus will heal His disciples blindness and explain to them the cost of discipleship. Mark has Jesus spitting on the blind man s eyes twice to illustrate the difficulty of curing the disciples blindness. Within this section Jesus will speak of His impending death three times, and three times the disciples will misunderstand. Their misunderstanding allows Jesus to explain. Misunderstanding for Mark is really a lack of faith or an unwillingness to take up one s cross. The section on discipleship ends with the curing of Bartimaeus, the model disciple, who cannot be silenced by the crowd and who leaves what possessions he has behind to approach Jesus who then cures him of his blindness. Tradition states that Mark s Gospel was written for non Palestinian Christians of pagan origin in Italy around AD, after the death of Peter. Mark does not refer back to the Old Testament like Matthew does, but takes time to explain Jewish customs, geography, names, and the Gospel message to non Jews. Today s Gospel (Jn 1:35 42) concludes the Christmas Season with John the Baptist proclaiming that Jesus is the Lamb of God. Lambs had a special place in Jewish worship. Each year, on the Day of Atonement, a spotless lamb was offered up in atonement for the sins of the nation as prescribed in the Book of Leviticus 16:34: This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites. Even at the very onset of Jesus public ministry, John points to Jesus Passion and death as atonement for all sin. John the Baptist s pronouncement prompts his disciples to leave him and follow Jesus, the One sent by the Father to redeem us. John s disciples ask Jesus, Where do you dwell? Deep down, they are asking, Where does God dwell? Where can He be found? Jesus responds, Come and see. Jesus invitation is the first call to discipleship a theme that Mark s Gospel will take up. Jesus words are an invitation to each of us to come and see that He is the answer to our hopes and aspirations. Come, and recognize that He is the source of eternal happiness and peace. John s disciples followed and stayed with Him. The definition of a disciple is one who remains with the Lord. Upon discovering Jesus, Andrew immediately reaches out to his brother Simon and announces, We have found the Messiah. The normal reaction upon embracing Jesus as Lord is to reach out to others in order to share the Good News. Andrew is always mentioned in the Gospels as Simon Peter s brother. He is overshadowed by Peter who will become the Rock upon which the Church was built. Yet, without Andrew, we would not have Peter. The Gospel makes the point that while each of us has a different ministry, we all serve the one Lord. As St. Paul writes to the Corinthians, The eye cannot say to the hand, I don't need you! And the head cannot say to the feet, I don't need you! (1Cor 12:21). Each disciple has an important place in living out and spreading the Gospel, from the great to the very ordinary person, even those who are seemingly over shadowed.
