9 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January May 29, , 2016 Page 10 9 LUKE S GOSPEL CORNER Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Through the sacrifice of His very life, Jesus inaugurated the new and lasting covenant between God and His people, which we commemorate in the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Through the invocation of the Holy Spirit, bread and wine are transformed into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Christ upon the spoken words of the priest, who stands in the place of Christ. This is the faith that St. Paul passed onto the Corinthians and to us in today s second reading: That the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread, and, after he had given thanks, broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. In the same way also the cup, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this in remembrance of me (1Cor 11: 23-26). The sign of the new covenant, bread and wine, is foreshadowed in the first reading from Genesis. Melchizedek, whose name in Hebrew, מ ל כּ י צ ד ק means the king of justice or righteous one, was a pagan priest-king of Salem (later known as Jerusalem) and was a priest of the pagan god el elyon, which means the most high god. After Yahweh had called Abraham to leave Ur, his homeland, Abraham traveled south where he inexplicably defeated an army much stronger than his own. Upon his return from battle, he encountered Melchizedek who offered a sacrifice of bread and wine in thanksgiving for Abraham s deliverance, establishing a covenant between himself and Abraham, after which they shared in the spoils of war. Psalm 110 transports this story to the period of the kings, proclaiming that it is Yahweh who raises up the King of Israel, seating him at His right hand, the place of honor. It is Yahweh, Himself, who forges the king s mace of victory, who smites foreign kings, routes the nations, crushes the heads of the enemy, and piles high their corpses. It is the Most High God who brings about the victory and who raises up a priest-king like Melchizedek in Jerusalem: You are a priest forever, he says of the king, in the line of Melchizedek. Melchizedek, the priest-king from Jerusalem, who sacrificed bread and wine, and whose reign seemingly has no beginning or end, is taken up again in the New Testament Letter to the Hebrews as a prototype of Jesus, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Jesus is the true priest-king in the line of David, who offered bread and wine at the Last Supper, establishing a new and lasting covenant, whose sacrifice once and for all reconciles us with God and who now sits at the right hand of the Father. The multiplication miracle in today s Gospel from Luke was chosen for this Solemnity because of its strong Eucharistic overtones. This miracle is foreshadowed in 2 Kings 4:42-44 when Elisha, the prophet of old, fed over a hundred men with just twenty barley loaves, with some remaining. Now, Jesus, the greatest of prophets, unveils God s bounty in a way that overshadows even that of Elisha. The Eucharistic tone of the multiplication of the loaves is evident if you compare the principal actions of this miracle with the Last Supper. In each instance, Jesus takes bread, lifts His eyes to heaven, says a blessing (gives thanks), breaks the bread, and gives it to his disciples. No Christian in the early Church could read today s Gospel without seeing similarities to the Last Supper account. The miracle of the multiplication of the loaves foreshadows the miracle of the Eucharist, which nourishes God s people throughout the world each day with the true Bread from Heaven. It is Jesus, a Priest in the line of Melchizedek, who offers a sacrifice of bread and wine, establishing a covenant with us forever, and who nourishes us with the gift of Himself, like the crowds in today s Gospel, who in a deserted place had nowhere to turn. It is Jesus, Priest, Prophet, and King who dwells within us each time we receive Him in the Eucharist. The King of Kings, and Lord of Lords transforms bread and wine to feed us along the journey. 1 Sam 8:18, 1Kgs 3:4 depicts the early kings of Israel as priest-kings. 2 looked up to heaven is a common Old Testament phase as seen in Gen 15:5; Deut. 4:19, Job 22:26, Macc 7:28 3 Sources: Genesis from the Jerome Biblical Commentary; Psalms, The Anchor Bible, Luke, The Anchor Bible. 10 May 29, 2016 BACK TO BASICS Page 10 Pope Francis recently promulgated his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia, or The Joy of Love, discussing marriage and family. Amoris Laetitia stands as one element within a great tradition of Catholic thought on marriage and family, and must be read in light of that tradition. So in the tradition of the Church, what are the effects of the Sacrament of Matrimony? Sacraments have effects when a sacrament is validly celebrated, something happens. Sacraments produce new realities. For example, baptism has the effect of the forgiveness of sin, incorporating one into the Church, making one an adopted child of God, and imparting an indelible spiritual character. A validly celebrated Eucharist brings about the change of the substances of bread and wine into the substances of the body and blood of Christ. Sacraments cause real effects. So what effect is caused by the Sacrament of Matrimony? A bond is created between the spouses, and the spouses receive the grace of the sacrament to live out their state in life. The Marriage Bond From a valid marriage arises a bond between the spouses which is perpetual (till death do we part) and exclusive (faithful). The bond is a new reality that comes about as an effect of the sacrament a reality as real as the couple themselves. The marriage bond has been established by God himself in such a way that a marriage between two baptized persons can never be dissolved. This bond, which results from the consent of the spouses and their consummation of the marriage, is a reality, henceforth irrevocable, and gives rise to a covenant guaranteed by God's fidelity. The Grace of the Sacrament of Matrimony Each of the sacraments gives a particular grace to those who receive them. These divine gifts help us to live a life of holiness in conformity to Christ. The grace proper to the sacrament of Matrimony is intended to perfect the couple's love and to strengthen their unity. In other words, marriage can be tough, and we recognize that we need God s grace to love as he loves. By this grace the couple helps one another to grow in holiness in their married life and to welcome and educate any children God gives them. Christ is the source of this grace. Christ, the spouse of the Church, encounters Christian spouses through the sacrament of Matrimony. Christ dwells with them, gives them the strength to take up their crosses and so follow him, to rise again after they have fallen, to forgive one another, to bear one another's burdens, to "be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ," and to love one another with supernatural, tender, and fruitful love. In the joys of their love and family life he gives them here on earth a foretaste of the wedding feast of the Lamb. Initial Special Needs Survey Results An online survey was conducted in recent months throughout the Diocese of Joliet, to help the Catholic Schools Office and Catholic Education Foundation determine the short term and long term needs of children with disabilities in our community. The complete survey results and the anonymous comments from the respondents can be accessed at The Special Needs Education Committee is continuing its demographic and resource study and will continue to reach out to parishes and schools with the sharing of information and additional requests for assistance in its efforts. Thank you to all respondents who took the time to reply to this important survey. 13 May 29, 2016 Page 13 ESTATE PLANNING WORKSHOP SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 7 The recent passing of Prince was shocking on many fronts. Foremost was the death at such an early age of such a prolific and well revered artist. Equally as shocking, however, was the revelation that he did not have a will to determine who will receive the proceeds of his estimated $300 million estate. Experts proffer it is likely to take years to sort through the myriad of legal claims. While this lack of foresight might be an eye opener for many it shouldn t really come as a complete surprise as it is estimated that over 50% of Americans age 55 and older have also not taken the steps to create a will or trust for their estate. The excuse most commonly given is that people don t think they have much in the way of assets to go through the process. On Tuesday, June 7, the Advancement Board of Saints Peter and Paul School is sponsoring an Estate Planning seminar. It will be held in Rm. U of the Ministry Center beginning at 6:30 p.m. We will conclude by 8:00 p.m. including allowing time for questions. The topics to be covered are broad but the goal is simple..that all attendees walk out with a will and Power of Attorney ready to be reviewed and signed. The agenda will include discussion on estate and income tax issues; donor advised funds; power of attorney for property and health care agents; withdrawal ages for children; asset protecting; and the importance of titling and beneficiary designation. The featured speaker will be Brett M. Dale, a partner with the firm Huck Bouma, is located in Wheaton. They have the resources of a downtown Chicago law firm with the ability to provide personalized, individualized services to its clients. Brett is a frequent lecturer for various groups including the Illinois Certified Public Accounting Society. He is the past President of the Fox Valley Chapter of the Illinois Society of Certified Public Accountants and past President of the Wheaton Rotary Club. Brett is a Director at Cadence Health, member of the Marianjoy Foundation and also a member of the Board of Trustees of the DuPage Community Foundation. There is no charge to attend the workshop. Our parish has always been very generous to our school in its financial support, said Advancement Director Frank Glowaty. We have sponsored similar presentations in the past as a service to our parishioners and as a way of thanking them for believing in the mission of our school. People work hard for their money and everyone wants to see their estate go to their loved ones and the institutions they have supported throughout their adult lives, he added. Those planning on attending are asked to RSVP to Pat Burson at Light refreshments will also be served.
