8 January 7, 2018 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Page 8 Mary the Indispensable Mother of God by Tim Staples Tim Staples explains the incredible impact that the Church s understanding of Mary has on our spiritual lives, and the profound way that Marian doctrines and dogmas safeguard what we believe about her Son. Caring for Caregivers Nourish for Caregivers Informational Workshop The SSPP pastoral ministry will be presenting a workshop on Thursday evening, January 18, 2018 at 6:00pm, about the program created in our diocese called Nourish- a Christ centered ministry, a group designed for caregivers. Virtually every one of us will care for a loved one at some time in our life. Though rewarding, it is not always easy. Nourish provides caregivers a faith perspective, as well as practical and emotional support, useful tools, and shared experience. The purpose of the workshop is to see if there is an interest in our parish for such a group. We will be interested in finding participants, as well as one or two people who might want to facilitate the monthly Nourish meetings. If there is sufficient interest in such a group, we will begin meeting in February on Thursday evenings on a monthly basis. If interested in learning more, please join us Thursday, January 18th, at 6pm in the upper level of the Ministry Center. Please contact Paulette Shea, parish nurse or Deacon Joe Verdico for more information.

11 January 7, 2018 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Page 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Today as we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, the Gospel is taken from Matthew 2:1-12as it records the only account in the Scriptures of the Magi from the East who follow the star to Bethlehem to pay homage to the newborn king. Bethlehem, located five miles south of Jerusalem, was the ancestral town of David, whose heir, the prophets had foretold, would rule God s people forever. While Matthew 2:6 emphasizes Jesus Davidic heritage (quoting Micah 5:1 and2samuel 5:2), Christ s universal mission to the Gentiles is underscored in the homage of the magi. This passage also shows that even from His birth, Christ would be a sign of contradiction, accepted or rejected. Magi, in ancient times, referred to astrologers, scientists, magicians, priests, princes, fortunetellers, and practitioners of the occult. Simon, a magi from Samaria was condemned by St. Paul in the Acts of the Apostles; whereas, in Matthew the magi represent the best of pagan religion men drawn to God through the revelation of nature. In early Christian art, the magi are depicted in Bethlehem and later in the catacombs as coming from Persia. In the book of Daniel, astrologers and astronomy are most frequently associated with the Babylonian court; however, the gifts of gold and frankincense in Isaiah 60:6 and in Psalm 72:15 are spoken of in conjunction with travelers from Arabia or the Syrian desert. The diversity of the magi foreshadows the diversity of Matthew s early Christian community and now the universal Church. Matthew describes the birth of Jesus in language consistent with the birth of a king in antiquity. Foreign envoys bearing gifts and a star announcing the birth of a great personage would resonate with his community. Still, Matthew observes that the star that has led the wise men from the East to Jerusalem is insufficient to point them to the place where Jesus lay. To find him, they are dependent upon the fuller revelation contained in the Scriptures, which ultimately leads them to Bethlehem. It is only through Divine revelation that the mystery of the Incarnation is made known to us. While Luke depicts shepherds in a field, drawn to Christ by an angel, Matthew recounts the magi from the East who are the first to come and pay Him homage. The Greek verb for homage that Matthew uses, proskynein, speaks of homage paid not only to a person of dignity and honor, but also to God. The magi are drawn by God not to a mere earthly king, but to the King of kings. Why does Matthew record this passage and what was the message to his Christian community? First, it demonstrates that Jesus was of Jewish stock, the Son of David, the One promised by the prophets of old, whom God would raise up from among His people to set them free. Second, it shows that the mission to the Gentiles, described in the Acts of the Apostles, was God s plan of salvation from the beginning. As described in Isaiah and in the Psalms, when the Messiah comes, He will bring salvation to all nations. Third, despite the special revelation that Herod, the Pharisees, and the scribes had from the Sacred Scriptures about the birth of the Messiah, they rejected this message and sought to destroy God s Son even from His birth. Jesus is a sign of contradiction, which as Simeon foretold, would be the rise and the downfall of many in Israel. Even from His birth, Christ was accepted by some and rejected by others. In fact, the language Matthew uses to describe how Herod assembled the chief priests and scribes to plot against the newborn king is the same language used when describing the chief priests, the Sanhedrin, and all the people assembled together in Jerusalem when Jesus is condemned to death in the Passion narrative. The paradox is that those who had been given so much failed to recognize the birth of the Messiah while those with so little did. Matthew wants to encourage us that Christ has come as the Savior for all. We are each loved by Him. Matthew warns us that even the most gifted, the most privileged, and the most educated persons are capable of rejecting Christ s message when it contradicts our perception of well-being and security. Finally, Matthew recounts this passage to underscore how God is first revealed in nature, then in the Scriptures, and ultimately in His Son. As we celebrate the Epiphany, we pray that we will be truly wise and humble, and that we will pay true homage to Christ, who is the fullest revelation of the Father.
