Memorial Day Mass in the Cemetery Mass will be celebrated at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery at 8:00 am on Monday. Please notice that the Mass will be offered at the new Mausoleum and not in front of the Grotto. We remember all those who have died in the service of our country, praying that God give them their eternal reward. We also remember those who presently serve that our Lord will bring them home safe and sound. Come and support the families of our servicemen and women. Thank you! Special thanks to our American Heritage Girls for their work on the reception for Father Paul Solomon and our magnificent choir for the beautiful music. The music that Father Paul chose for his first Mass of Thanksgiving was truly splendid. Thanks to all staff and volunteers who worked so hard to make Father Paul s first Mass of Thanksgiving so memorable. The food was wonderful, the music excellent and the company glorious. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

8 Page 8 Pray With Us EUCHARISTIC MIRACLE... SPAIN, 1824 COME WALK WITH JESUS He who took flesh in order to become our companion along the way needs to be everywhere proclaimed, especially in our streets and homes as an expression of our grateful love and source of blessing. Corpus Christi Procession June 7th Begins at 12:30 PM Mass 1:30 PM Begins the Eucharistic Procession to 4 altars of repose set up around the neighborhood representing the spreading of the four Gospels to the four corners of the world! There will be hymns, prayers and closing with Benediction Invitation to All First Communicants All First Communicants are invited to serve as escorts for the Blessed Sacrament in the Corpus Christi Procession on June 7th. Parents should bring their children dressed in their First Communion attire to the church by 12:15 pm. They will walk with our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament escorted by the Knights of Columbus. For response and questions, please contact Sarah Bogusz at or sarahnjoe@sbcglobal.net. In the Eucharistic miracle of Onil, a pyx containing a consecrated Host was robbed from a parish church. Days later, a woman from the nearby town of Tibi recovered the stolen pyx with the consecrated Host inside in the middle of a green field. Exactly 119 years later, on November 28, 1943, Don Guillermo Hijarrubia, delegate of the Archbishop of Valencia, confirmed the authenticity of the miracle, verifying the complete preservation of the Host. To this day the consecrated Host has remained intact in spite of the 189 years that have passed. EUCHARISTIC MIRACLE BOLSENA-ORVIETO, ITALY 1263 Perhaps the best known miracle in which there was a lack of faith in the Real Presence was the miracle of Bolsena-Orvieto. A Bohemian priest by the name of Peter of Prague was tempted into questioning the Real Presence. When he broke the Host after the Consecration he was stunned to see blood flowing from it and dripping onto the corporal (the square piece of linen on which the Host and chalice are placed during Mass). The bloodstained corporal was taken to the Cathedral of Orvieto where it is preserved to this day. It was as a result of this great miracle that the Pope UrbanIV commissioned Saint Thomas Aquinas to write the Mass of the "Body of Christ" (Corpus Christi) and by means of a papal bull instituted the feast of Corpus Christi. O Sacrament most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, All praise and all thanksgiving, Be every moment Thine!

11 Page 11 Mark s Gospel Corner One of the options for today s Gospel can be taken from John 15:26-27; 16:12-14 where Jesus promises that He and His Father will send the Spirit of Truth who will witness to Jesus and guide us to all truth. Empowered by the Spirit of God, Jesus tells us, You too must witness to me. Alternately, the Gospel may be taken from John 20:19-23 where Jesus says, As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And, when he had said this, he breathed on them and said Receive the Holy Spirit. The workings of the Holy Spirit first appear in Acts 1:2 and 56 times thereafter. 1 Luke emphasizes that Jesus work, His mission, did not end with His ignominious death on the cross 2 ; it is just beginning and the Holy Spirit is the One empowering the work of the Church. In Acts 2:1-3:26, Luke recounts Pentecost, where in a fuller way, the Holy Spirit is bestowed on the Apostles, vanquishing fear. Initially following Jesus death, the Apostles scattered and remained in hiding for fear of the Jews. Following His ascension, where again Jesus bestowed on them a sharing in His Holy Spirit, they gathered in the upper room devoting themselves with one accord to prayer. Now, following Pentecost, they walk confidentially in the streets of Jerusalem, the same city that condemned Jesus and sentenced Him to death, proclaiming all that God has accomplished through Jesus. Pentecost marks the Period of the Church precisely as the time when all followers of Christ must bear witness to him. 3 One of the first workings of the Holy Spirit, following Jesus appearance to the Apostles on Easter Sunday, where He breathed on them His Holy Spirit, was the reunification of the Apostles. What was scattered has been restored through the Spirit. In Acts 1:12-14, Luke takes pains to emphasize that the primitive Church has been restored. In Acts 1:15-26, the Apostles even recognize that someone must be raised up to fill the role that Judas abandoned, because the mission Jesus had planned for him cannot be left undone. Today s passage from Acts tells us that following the bestowal of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles speak in various tongues about the mighty deeds of God. This passage reminds us of the account in Genesis where through mankind s arrogance and sin, they attempted to set themselves up as God, building a tower into the heavens known as the Tower of Babel. While the passage depicts God as confusing their language so that man s attempt would be thwarted, it was actually man s dissention, discord, distrust, and envy which led to separation. Now, in Acts, through the workings of the Holy Spirit, men of every language can understand and hear about the mighty deeds of God. What was scattered is being restored through the Sprit. The passage also looks forward to the missionary work of the Apostles, especially Paul and later missionaries of the Church, who brought the Gospel to men of every nation. Lastly, it is a charge to us, to leave fear behind and proclaim in our lives the mighty works of God. 1 Joseph A. 12 Page 12 The New Evangelization Christian Service Happenings TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY We ask God's blessings on all parishioners who support our Transitional Housing Ministry through any gifts of service or financial donations. Your acts of charity truly prove that you are Easter people energized by the Ascension, Pentecost, and the Holy Trinity to carry out Christ's work in our community. It is only through your continued support that THM can help these homeless families become self-sufficient. They are very grateful to you! For any information about THM, call Jack Flowers at Every Tuesday during May at 1:30pm, there will be a rosary said for LIFE on our campus outside by our Blessed Mother Statue. This is a beautiful way to spend some time in prayer together and to honor Our Lady during her month. All are warmly welcome. Mothers of young children, please know we love seeing your little ones- so don't let this keep you from joining us. This is a powerful witness to many that ALL Life is precious. SS Peter and Paul Troop IL0908 American Heritage Girls Troop IL0908 at SS Peter and Paul Parish will have registration for new and continuing members after June 1. Our troop will meet in September every second and fourth Monday of the month from 4:30-6:00 PM. New members are always welcome. American Heritage Girls is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mission of building women of integrity through service to God, family, community and country. The organization offers badge programs, service projects, girl leadership opportunities and outdoor experiences to its members. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Today as we celebrate Pentecost, the Holy Spirit wants to make us advocates of God s presence to bring new life to others, especially those who do not know the love of God in their lives. Your gift in a St. Vincent de Paul green envelope will help the poor to believe in the mystery of God s love for them. Please continue to help us by placing a donation in a green envelope found at the side and rear entrances of the church and chapel. We may be contacted by calling Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. We re hoping to start planting after Mother s Day so don t delay call today!
