3 Page 3 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Why is this ن on the front of our bulletin? During the middle of the 20th Century the Nazis had a whole series of designations for various groups living within the boundaries they governed. One designation was a star of David placed on the lapel of Jewish people many of whom would be interred in concentration camps and executed. The Islamic State uses this symbol, on the front of our bulletin, to designate Christians, Christian homes, businesses owned by Christians and Christian places of worship. The majority of Christians remaining in Iraq and Syria are Catholic. More than two years ago, the National Review explained: "Further, the Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, had marked homes and businesses owned by Christians with a red, painted ) pronouncedن noon ), the 14th letter of the Arabic alphabet and the equivalent to the Roman letter N. The standsن for Nasara or Nazarenes, a pejorative Arabic word for Christians." This symbol has now been taken on by people, Christian and non-christian, as a sign of solidarity with those who are being killed for their Christian faith. We began putting this symbol on the front of our bulletin a year ago. Please feel free to place it in the window of your home or on your car or anywhere you would like as a sign of solidarity and prayer for those so persecuted. May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. Milota Prayers for the New Year Remember us, O God; from age to age be our comforter. You have given us the wonder of time, blessings in days and nights, seasons and years. Bless your children at the turning of the year and fill the months ahead with the bright hope that is ours in the coming of Christ. You are our God, living and reigning, forever and ever. R/. Amen. Lord, make me an instrument of your peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. R/. Amen. ~ Attributed to St. Francis of Assisi

Research different saints who have spoken to Jesus about the Holy Souls or have been visited by Holy Souls requesting prayers. Pray this beautiful prayer for the Faithful Departed from Novena for the Relief of the Poor Souls in Purgatory, by a missionary of the Sacred Heart. Picture Our Lord reaching his strong right hand in to Purgatory and lifting souls into Heaven. O most compassionate Jesus, have mercy on the souls detained in Purgatory for whose redemption Thou didst take upon Thee our nature and endure a bitter death. Mercifully hear their sighs, look with pity on the tears which they now shed before Thee and, by virtue of Thy Passion, release them from the pains due unto their sins. O most merciful Jesus, let They Precious Blood reach down into Purgatory and refresh and revive the captive souls which suffer there. Stretch forth unto them Thy strong right hand and bring them forth into the place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen. Let us pray a great deal for them and they will pray for us. 9 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, Page 10 9 MATTHEW S GOSPEL CORNER Today as we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, the Gospel from Luke 2:16-21 tells of the shepherds who went in haste to the manger in Bethlehem just as the angel had instructed them. According to some scholars, the shepherds to whom the angel appeared proclaiming the birth of the Savior, the Anointed One of God, were not ordinary shepherds. Due to their proximity to Jerusalem, they likely raised the unblemished male sheep used for sacrifice in the Temple. If accurate, it is providential that they would be the first to greet the newborn king, the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world. Upon seeing the child in the manger, the shepherds proclaimed all that they had heard about the child and all who heard were astonished. Yet only Mary kept with concern all these events, interpreting them in her heart. Though astonished, the shepherds and magi disappear from the scene. Mary alone is the only adult to bridge the gap between Jesus boyhood and His public ministry. What then is meant that Mary kept with concern all these events? The Old Testament provides other examples of this phrase. In Genesis, Jacob, the father of Joseph, kept with concern the revelations that came to Joseph through dreams (Gen 37:11). In the Book of Daniel, after Daniel interpreted the king s dreams, Nebuchadnezzar kept with concern these words in his heart. In the Book of Sirach 39:1-3, the devout person explores the wisdom of all the ancients and is occupied with the prophecies. He preserves the discourses of the famous, and goes to the heart of involved savings. He seeks out the hidden meaning of proverbs, and is busied with the enigmas found in parables. In Proverbs, a wise father instructs his son, Hold in your heart my words. As those before her had done, Mary pondered the events she experienced and through prayer and contemplation recognized in them the will of God. She trusted that God was her Father whose providence would sustain her. She believed and therefore obeyed even when there was not a clear vision of what lay ahead. As such, Luke recognized Mary as the first disciple and the model of discipleship. Though charged with an unique role in God s plan of salvation, Mary was not given a road map or perfect insight nor was she spared of suffering and worry. Finding Jesus in the Temple after searching for him for three days, his parents were astonished, and his mother said to him, Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety. When Simeon foretold that Jesus would be the rise and fall of many in Israel, and that she, herself would be pierced with a sword, she reacted with astonishment and wondered what these words meant. St. Paul s words to the Corinthians apply most especially to Mary, who walked by faith, and not by sight (2Cor 5:7). Mary believed when the angel Gabriel told her she would conceive and bear a child. Mary trusted when forced to flee to Egypt. Mary hoped as she watched her Son lifted upon the cross. The words of Mary s cousin Elizabeth, spoken at the Visitation were applicable throughout Mary s life: Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled. In the last scene in the Gospel, Luke recounts the circumcision and naming of the child Jesus in fulfillment of the command given to Mary in the Annunciation. In naming the child Jesus, she completes the vow to do all that God had made known at the Annunciation when Mary proclaimed, Let it happen to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). 1The Birth of the Messiah, pp Ibid, pp For more information about Matthew s Gospel Corner Robert.J.Schuhriemen@gmail.com

10 BACK TO BASIS Page 10 Back to Basics: Mary the Mother of God Each year on January 1, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God. This title given to Our Lady dates to the early Church, and speaks a truth not just about Mary, but also about Christ. Our Creed says that by the power of the Holy Spirit, He [Christ] was born of the Virgin Mary and became man. Mary has played an integral role in the salvation of humanity from the moment of her fiat let it be done to me according to your word. The life and mission of Mary must always be seen, however, in the light of the person and work of her Son Jesus Christ, and the gifts bestowed upon her by the Holy Spirit. Let s hear a little about what the Second Vatican Council had to say about Mary. Mary is seen as the first and most perfect disciple of Christ, and she is therefore discussed in Lumen Gentium the document on the Church: There is but one Mediator as we know from the words of the apostle, "for there is one God and one mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself a redemption for all. The maternal duty of Mary toward men in no wise obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows His power. For all the salvific influence of the Blessed Virgin on men originates, not from some inner necessity, but from the divine pleasure. It flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on His mediation, depends entirely on it and draws all its power from it. In no way does it impede, but rather does it foster the immediate union of the faithful with Christ (LG 60). So Mary in no way detracts from Christ, but derives her role only from His goodness and as part of His saving plan. Even calling Mary the Mother of God points primarily to a truth about Jesus. Among the dogmas of the Church, there are four that relate to Mary: the Divine Motherhood of Mary, the Immaculate Conception, the Perpetual Virginity, and the Bodily Assumption of Mary. The divine motherhood of Mary means that she may be fittingly called the Mother of God. Put simply: Mary is the mother of Jesus, Jesus is God, therefore Mary is the Mother of God. But in the early Church it was asked, could Mary rightly be called Mother of God, or simply Mother of Jesus? One group, called Nestorians, tried to split the person of Jesus into two, so that Mary was the mother of only the human person Jesus, but not the mother of God. The early Church held firm that there is only one person, one subject, in Christ. In other words, you can t divide Jesus in two and attribute some things to one person and other things to another person. Jesus is one Person, a Divine Person, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. It was God the Son who was born into the world in the manger at Bethlehem. Amid these controversies, the Council of Ephesus in 431 defined that Mary can indeed be called Theotokos Godbearer or Mother of God. This belief has further repercussions. If it was indeed God that was born to a woman, then it was also God who lived a human life, it was God who died on the cross, and only then are we saved from our sins. God emptied Himself taking the form of a slave taking the form even of a baby.
