Thanksgiving Mass Our pastor, Fr. Milota, has again authorized the Thanksgiving Mass collection be given to our parish St. Vincent de Paul conference to assist those in need in our community. Every holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas, your Parish SVdP assists many families with gift cards for food, delivered meals, and Christmas gifts for the children of those families. We anticipate this year, the meals and food gift cards will provide 2,000 meals for families and seniors in our community. That is in addition to the families and individuals that will be helped with necessities, such as rent, mortgage, utilities, and auto expenses. You, the parishioners of Saints Peter & Paul, make this possible with your overwhelming generosity that you give through your donations in the special SVdP envelopes throughout the year, the parish funding given to SVdP by the Christian Service Commission, when supporting the Light the Way campaign, and the Thanksgiving Mass collection. SVdP thanks Fr. Milota, for his continuing support and you, the Saints Peter & Paul parishioners for your caring for your neighbors in need.

3 Page 3 A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Jubilee of Mercy Ends on November 20th As you know, we have been celebrating a Jubilee Year of Mercy which will come to a close on November 20th, the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Our own parish church has been designated a pilgrimage church able to bestow the Plenary Indulgence of the Jubilee Year just as a visit to Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome would; however, this privilege also ends on November 20th. Hence, here is a little reminder of the meaning of this indulgence and how to obtain it. What is a jubilee year? The practice of a jubilee year has ancient roots in the Jewish tradition and evidence for it can be found in the Old Testament (for example, see Leviticus 25). The jubilee year was called every fifty years and was a time for forgiveness. It stood as a reminder of God's providence and mercy. The dedication of a year for this emphasis provided the community with a time to come back into right relationship with one another and with God. As the practice of the jubilee year was adopted into the Catholic Church, these themes of mercy, forgiveness, and solidarity continued. How is this Jubilee different from other Jubilee years? The Jubilee of Mercy that Pope Francis has called, from December 8, 2015 November 20, 2016, is an Extraordinary Jubilee. This designation as an "Extraordinary Jubilee" sets it apart from the ordinary cycle of jubilees, or holy years, which are called every 25 years in the Catholic Church. By calling for a holy year outside of the normal cycle, a particular event or theme is emphasized. For example, Pope Francis called this particular Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy to direct our attention and actions "on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father's actions in our lives... a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective" (MV, 3... ). Why a Jubilee of Mercy now? Pope Francis himself addressed this question in his homily... for First Vespers for Divine Mercy Sunday. "Here, then, is the reason for the Jubilee: because this is the time for mercy. It is the favourable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer everyone, every one, the way of forgiveness and reconciliation. May the Mother of God open our eyes, so that we may comprehend the task to which we have been called; and may she obtain for us the grace to experience this Jubilee of Mercy as faithful and fruitful witnesses of Christ." What is the Jubilee of Mercy? In the Bull of Indiction, Misericordiae vultus... Pope Francis declared that the Jubilee of Mercy will begin on December 8, 2015 (the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary) and conclude on November 20, 2016 (the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe). December 8, 2015 also marks the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of the Second Vatican Council, a Council that sought to bring the love of God to the modern world. Similarly, the Holy Father strongly desires this Jubilee celebration of mercy to be lived out in the daily lives of the faithful, and all who turn to God for compassionate love and mercy." How do I obtain the Plenary Indulgence of the Year of Mercy? After making a pilgrimage to our Church, the conditions are as follows: First, only one indulgence per day can be obtained and only for the person themselves or a deceased person of their designation. Second, the individual must be in the state of grace and detached from all sin, mortal and venial. Third, the individual must receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation within the time frame of 7 days prior to the visit or 7 days after the visit and receive Holy Communion during this same time frame. Fourth, during the visit the person seeking the indulgence must pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. This typically takes the form of the Nicene or Apostles Creed, the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Fifth, perform one of the Spiritual or Corporal Works of Mercy. Finally, the Plenary Indulgence may received by those who are seriously ill and unable to make the pilgrimage to the pilgrimage church from their bed by receiving the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation and offering the same prayers as above. Someone wanting the Sacrament of Reconciliation in their home should phone the parish office or have a family member phone the parish office.

4 Page 4 Q. and A. on the Plenary Indulgence 1 USCCB. Regarding the obtaining of the plenary indulgence attached to a visit to our parish church and so I thought some clarification was in order: 1. Since you can obtain the indulgence once per day must you receive Holy Communion each time that you receive the indulgence? Yes. Although the indulgence may be received 7 days prior or 7 days after having received Holy Communion and having gone to confession, the Enchiridion of Indulgences states: "A single sacramental confession suffices for gaining several plenary indulgences; but Communion must be received and prayer for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff must be recited for the gaining of each plenary indulgence." 2. Is it required that you offer the Creed while visiting the pilgrimage site? Yes. The Enchiridion of Indulgences states: "The work prescribed for acquiring a plenary indulgence connected with a church or oratory consists in a devout visit and the recitation during the visit of one Our Father and the Creed." 3. Is it required that I pray the Our Father and Hail Mary for the intentions of the Pope in addition to the Creed? The Enchiridion states: "The condition of praying for the intention of the Sovereign Pontiff is fully satisfied by reciting one Our Father and one Hail Mary; nevertheless, each one is free to recite any other prayer according to his piety and devotion." 4. Which door is the Holy Door for our parish church? Any of the doors of our church will function as the Holy Door for the reception of the indulgence; however, for the ease of pilgrims visiting who are not from our parish, we have put a sign "Porta Sancta" on the door on the North side of the church. Please notice that the indulgence is attached only to our parish church and not the Holy Family Chapel nor the Adoration Chapel. Hail Holy Queen We have been praying the Hail Holy Queen following the dismissal at all Masses, because Pope Francis had asked us to pray this prayer to the Blessed Mother during the Jubilee Year of Mercy. Therefore, we will return to praying the Hail Mary and Saint Michael Prayer on November 21st. Of course, everyone is encouraged to keep the Hail Holy Queen in your repertoire but we will no longer pay this prayer at Mass. Congratulations to our Jr. High Football Team and Cubs Fans Our parish school Jr. High foot ball team won the championship once again this year. Kudos to our team fortunately we only had to wait one more year and not 108 for another championship. And yes congratulations to all Cubs fans on their win. I must admit, it is heartwarming to have Cubs fans join the same club as the White Sox who won the World Series in 2005! May Almighty God bless you and keep you. In Christ, Fr. Thomas A. 11 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January November 31, 13, Page LUKE S GOSPEL CORNER The healing of a blind person in the Gospels has meaning well beyond the physical cure. The central portion of Mark's Gospel, for example, is bracketed, or framed, by two healing miracles, both involving the cure of a blind man. These miracles are intended to shed light on the miracle that will take place in the central section of the Gospel within Jesus disciples the healing of their spiritual blindness, their failure to understand the purpose of Jesus incarnation and what it means to be a disciple. In Mark's Gospel, the healing that parallels Luke 18:35-43 is immediately preceded by the failure of the disciples to understand discipleship: we see them arguing among themselves about which of them will be the greatest in Christ s kingdom. In Luke's Gospel this miracle is the last one performed by Jesus before entering Jerusalem where He will suffer and die. Luke places the miracle here so that those who witness Jesus Passion and Resurrection might see its purpose with the eyes of faith. While Jesus is entering Jericho, a blind man asks what all the commotion is about. He is told that Jesus of Nazareth is approaching, whereupon he immediately calls out to Jesus, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. The crowd tries to silence the blind man, but he cries out all the more. The fact that Jesus is simply passing through Jericho heightens his desperation. This blind, helpless beggar, sustained by the few alms tossed at him by those passing by, is not going to allow his one chance for healing to pass him by. Like Zacchaeus, his efforts are rewarded when Jesus stops and calls out to Him. The crowd tells him, "The teacher is calling you." Abandoning the little he has, in contrast to the rich man earlier in the Gospel, he approaches Jesus full of confidence. Though fully aware of the man s need, Jesus asks him, What do you want? Unlike the apostles James and John who asked for glory and power at Jesus right hand, this blind man simply tells Jesus, I want to see. The prayer of this blind man is the prayer of each one of us, Lord, I have lost my way; help me to see where I am to go. The Gospels recount this story because this man embodies what it means to be a disciple. Fully aware of his need and utter dependence, the blind man calls out to the Son of David, the Lord, to have mercy on him. He is not held back by the rebuke of the crowd but cries out all the more, and when called by Christ, he abandons the things that were a hindrance to his response to Jesus. Once healed, what does he do? Luke tells us, He kept following Jesus, glorifying God; and all the people who saw it gave praise to God. The man recognizes that the only appropriate response to the generosity of God is to immediately follow Jesus on the way to Jerusalem. Luke tells his readers that wherever the Master goes, His servant must follow, even in His passion and death. As this Year of Mercy soon draws to a close, do not let it pass you by. Let us each avail ourselves to God s mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Do not let the burden of sin, weakness, shame, or the other things that have crowded out God s grace hinder you from approaching Jesus and begging Him to cure you. Let us ask Jesus to help us find our way to overcome sins that we habitually commit, recognizing that it is through our own participation in His passion and death that we will rise with Him and reign in glory. Like the blind man in today s Gospel, our reconciliation and praise might be the impetus for others to seek God s forgiveness and to sing His praise. 1 See Mark 8:22-26 and 10: Joseph A.
