4 WHY BE CATHOLIC? The Fathers of Mercy will be joining our parish for Sunday Masses, and sessions in the morning and evening. Morning sessions (Monday-Thursday) 9:00-10:00AM Evening sessions (Monday-Thursday) 7:00-8:00PM All sessions in the main Church. Reception following the Thursday evening session Ministry Center. Sessions will include exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Thursday evening session will be within a Mass. A selection of CDs will be on sale each evening. Confession will be available during and after the Mission talks. The Fathers of Mercy is a Roman Catholic Congregation of Priests. Their primary Apostolate is to preach parish missions and retreats, with an emphasis on the Sacraments of the Holy Eucharist and Confession. Fr. Ken Geraci spent most of his young adult life as a fallen away Catholic and agnostic. After working in technology for a few years, he joined a few of his coworkers in establishing a 4.5M Internet software company. Focused on money, fitness and success, he made little room for God; but God did not give up on him. Through a series of conversions, years of struggle, study and questioning, Fr. Ken found his way from agnosticism, to non-denomination Christianity, and ultimately, back to the Catholic Church. During this mission, Fr. Ken will open up for us the value and meaning of being Catholic. Fr. Ken joined the Fathers of Mercy in 2006 and was ordained in This mission is for people of all ages and levels of faith, from those who are madly in love with Jesus, to those who pretty much cannot stand church or religion. Regardless of your level of faith, come and experience God s Divine Mercy! Mission Talks Monday: What Did Jesus Do - Church or Spirituality? Tuesday: Why Do We Do That As Catholics? Wednesday: Two Obstacles of Healing Thursday: How to Pray the Mass Please note that our Parish Office will be closed each morning from 9:00am to 10:00am to give the Saints Peter and Paul staff an opportunity to attend the morning sessions. If you do not yet look forward to Confession in the same way you look forward to Communion, this will change your life. The CD was truly inspirational, informative, and educational. I have listened to it several times. Diane - Lewiston, ME This talk was amazing in that it framed the sacrament of confession in such a positive way, highlighting the healing factor, which is what it is really all about. Giving a good and honest confession is hard and it has given me a new way to examine myself by looking in general at where I need God's grace in my life. I think this is a great talk for those coming to the Faith, because it is such a healthy way to see this sacrament. The presentation was so inspiring that I was getting excited about my next confession and it really helped with my examination of conscience. Paul - Reading, PA Deeply insightful and practical...i warmly recommend it, not only to regular penitents, but especially to those who, for whatever reason, haven t been to Confession in a long time and who are looking for reasons to return. Most Rev. William E. Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore ENCOUNTER SAFIATA A Brief History of TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY Looking to the Future Transitional Housing Ministry (THM) is a two-year housing program for homeless families. THM works with a large organization, Bridge Communities, that owns about 100 apartments that serve as housing for our clients, as well as others. Bridge partners with about 50 other program partners such as SSPP. Bridge also provides services to THM including screening potential clients, mentor training, assigning a case manager for each family; they assist in working with schools, job search, family counseling, auto grants, etc. During the two years rent and utilities are paid by THM, the families are mentored almost weekly. Mentors work with families establishing budgets, debt and credit score management, employment improvement, school issues, use of social services and family issues. The goal of the program is improved self sufficiency upon leaving with job / wage improvement, debt reduction, improved credit scores, large savings and a good outlook for safe and proper housing. The program has serviced more than 60 clients with a high rate of success. THM began in 1995 and funding comes from the SSPP Pink Envelopes. I have managed the Ministry the last 15 years since the founding of the Ministry in The support of the SSPP community has been outstanding, providing financial support, mentors, other volunteers, and auto donations. The time has come for me to step aside and for new leadership to step forward. To manage THM, this role is best served by one who has been a mentor, but even more importantly one who is understanding, empathetic and compassionate. I will assist the new person during a transitional period with an experienced mentor or while the person is going through mentoring. This is a tremendous Ministry the Parish supports and where the family and the volunteers achieve life changing experiences. 10 Saint Vincent de Paul Vincentian Meditation Pope John Paul II says to the laity: There cannot be two parallel lives in your existence as lay men and women: on the one hand, the so-called spiritual life, with its values and demands; on the other, the so-called secular life, that is life in a family, at work, social relationships, in the responsibilities of public life and in culture. Every activity, every situation, every precise responsibility are the occasions ordained by Providence for a continuous exercise of faith, hope and charity. (US Manual of the SVDP, p.59) Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. 11 Mark s Gospel Corner Today s Gospel is taken from John 2:13-25 and recounts when Jesus cleanses the temple spilling the moneychanger s tables and declares, Stop making my Father s house a marketplace (literally a market house there is a play on words here: Father s house market house). 1 Like the prophet Zechariah, zeal for God s house consumes Jesus. When Jesus authority to act is challenged (knowing the Jewish leaders intend to kill Him), He responds, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Filled with incredulousness, the leaders retort, Will you in three days raise up a temple taking forty-six years to construct? They concluded that Jesus was speaking about the Jewish Temple. After Jesus is raised up in three days, Christians realized that Jesus was speaking about the temple of His Body and recognized that His prophecy had been fulfilled. The passage, in part, is a response to critics who claimed after Jesus death that He was a false prophet. When the Temple was destroyed in 70 AD, Christians were blamed for its destruction and were expelled from the community, causing some to question whether Jesus was truly the Messiah and if He would return and establish His kingdom. John is responding to this crisis of faith. The verb form used here fordestroy, (referred to as the ironic imperative ) implies, Go ahead and see what happens. 2 By destroying the Temple of Jesus Body, John attributes the cause of the destruction of the Jewish Temple to the Jewish leaders (by which John means the Pharisees, scribes, and the elders) because of their refusal to believe. In destroying Jesus, the Jewish leaders destroyed themselves. In a like manner, in our refusal to believe, we destroy ourselves. 3 John clarifies that the lasting temple, the place where God dwells is Jesus body. The phrase, I will raise it up in three days are the exact words used in the resurrection narratives. Jesus kingdom has arrived it is at hand. His obedience to His Father led Him to His death and resurrection where He was consumed by love but not defeated. He reigns victorious, and so do we. The present trials are passing. God is already in our midst and dwells within us: If you love me and keep my commandments, the Father and I will come to you and make our home within you (Jn 14:23). We are the temple where God dwells, so we do not journey alone. If we too are consumed by love in service of God, we will not be destroyed, but will be victorious. What is the original significance of this passage cited by all four evangelists? When the Messiah came, it was expected that he would cleanse the temple, making it a place of prayer for all nations. When false witnesses testified at Jesus trial that He would destroy the Temple, it prompted the High Priest to demand, I charge you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God (Mt 26:63). Jesus cleansing of the Temple clearly raised Messianic expectations among those who witnessed it something the Jews could not allow to go unchallenged. Yet Jesus has fulfilled this expectation. He has cleansed the Temple, the people of God, which St. Paul refers to as the Body of Christ, the Church. It is the place where God dwells among us. Lent is the time when we prepare ourselves, cleanse the house, making it more fitting for God a time to destroy false gods and temples. It is a time to rely solely on God who wishes to raise us up to His heavenly temple where we shall reign with Him. 1Brown, The Gospel of John, XIII-XXI, p Ibid. 3Ibid.
