Second Reading: John 3: 1-2, Gospel: St. Luke 2: FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY SAINTS FOR THE WEEK Tues. Jan. 1 MARY, MOTHER OF GOD Holy Day of Obligation Wed. Jan. 3 St. Basil the Great & St. Gregory However it is you define your family unit, today is a day for celebration. It is a wonderful opportunity to take stock, to count your blessings, and simply to look around the table and remind yourself of the gift of family. The feast of the Holy Family upholds the family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph as a model for Christian families everywhere. The celebration of the feast is relatively new, first appearing in the liturgy at the end of the nineteenth century and officially adopted into the roman church calendar in Observed on the first Sunday after Christmas, this holy day reminds us of the important role that family played in Jesus life and of the importance in the life of the Church. It is customary for families to say a special prayer for their children on this day and for couples to renew their marriage vows. We bring the Holy Family to mind during the week after Christmas in order to reflect more deeply on the meaning of Christ s humanity. Because Jesus became one of us, there is no aspect of humanity with which He is unfamiliar, including the struggles and the blessings experienced within the context of family life. While our human families will always fall short of the ideal, we can find comfort and encouragement in the faith, hope and love that are exemplified in the Holy Family of Nazareth. TODAY S GOSPEL Today s celebration demonstrates Christ s humility and obedience with respect to the fourth commandment, while also highlighting the loving care that His parents exercised in His keeping. Looking at the Holy Family, we see the love, the protection, and the diligent care that they gave to the Redeemer. We cannot fail to feel uneasiness, perhaps a shameful thought, for the time in which we have not rendered the appropriate care and attention to the Blessed Eucharist. We can only ask for forgiveness and do penance for all the sacrilegious acts and the lack of respect that are committed in front of the Blessed Eucharist. We can only ask the Lord, through the intersession of the Holy Family of Nazareth, for a greater love for their Son Incarnate, who has decided to remain here on earth with us every day until the end of time. FAMILY ACTIVITY Perhaps you might say a prayer dedicating your family to the Holy Family. Pray also for all families and for our country to uphold the sanctity of the marriage bond which is under attack. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK How can I imitate the Holy Family within my Christian family? PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY Lord Jesus Christ, who, being made subject to Mary and Joseph, didst consecrate domestic life by Thine ineffable virtues; grant that we, with the assistance of both, may be taught by the example of Thy Holy Family and may attain to its everlasting fellowship. Who livest and reignest, forever. Amen PRAYER BEFORE MASS ON NEW YEAR S DAY Father of love, we are getting ready to attend Holy Mass together now, our first Mass of the New Year. Make us joyful and thankful for this day and for every day for the New Year. Bless us, Father as we begin this New Year, in the Name of Jesus Our Lord. Amen

3 FEAST OF MARY, THE MOTHER OF GOD On Tuesday January 1 st, (Holy Day of Obligation) our church will be celebrating the Solemnity of Mary along with prayers for the New Year. We join with all the Catholics of the world in honoring Mary on her day. As we walk in the newness of the light of this day, keep us in love with one another as Mary has taught us. Because this feast is about the motherhood of Mary, it helps us to more deeply grasp the meaning of the Incarnation: God, himself, born to a human mother. This day celebrates Mary s most important title: The Theotokos, or God-bearer. "Mary, the all-holy ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time. For the first time in the plan of salvation and because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and his Spirit could dwell among men. In this sense the Church's Tradition has often read the most beautiful texts on wisdom in relation to Mary. Mary is acclaimed and represented in the liturgy as the "Seat of Wisdom." Catechism of the Catholic Church 721 NEW YEAR S DAY 2013 In the blink of an eye, we move from the end of one experience to the beginning of another. The old year ends, and a moment later, the new year begins; if only everything in life could be so efficient! New Year s Day brings with it the feeling that all things are possible. A whole year lies ahead of us, vast and open, like uncharted waters. We believe that the year to come will be better than the one just past. We emphasize brightness and hope-filled expectation. FAMILY BLESSING God of our resolutions, You are the reason for our hope, the source of our inspiration. As we begin this New Year, we gather around this table. We ask for your blessing not only on the food that we share but also on the plans we make and the choices that are ahead of us. Send us a generous portion of your Spirit, that we might walk in your way, be confident in your truth, and live in your life. Make us a sign of your love, a witness of your forgiveness, a people committed to the gospel. We pray in expectant hope..... Amen.
