1 Shrine Herald February 3, 2008 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Lent 2008 Our journey to Easter begins on Ash Wednesday of this week. Ash Wednesday is a day of universal fast and abstinence for the entire Church. This means that adults who are in good health are to refrain from eating any meat or poultry, not to eat between meals, and to eat less at meals than they usually do. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent continues until Holy Thursday. With the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, Lent ends and we begin the Sacred Triduum or Holy Three Days of the Lord s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Lent has the two fold character of preparing the catechumens to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist; and of preparing the faithful (all the rest of us) to be more attentive to God s Word and preparing through prayer, penance, and almsgiving to renew our Baptismal Promises at Easter. As a community of faith, we enter into a time of prayer and fasting to become more acutely aware of the gift of new life in Christ that is ours through Baptism. Review the calendar of Lenten Events in t h e H e r a l d, o r o n l i n e a t for an overview of all the programs and events here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower to help in your journey toward Easter. 3 February 3, 2008 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... A Thank You Note Dear Friends, We sincerely thank Monsignor Easton, all the priests of the parish and all of you for giving us the wonderful opportunity to visit you and share about our mission work. We thank you on behalf of the children and the elderly that we serve. Your prayers and generous sharing will mean a lot and we are very grateful to you. Your kindness will be remembered always. May God continue to bless you. Please keep us in your valuable prayers. With Love and Prayers, Tom Chitta and Dr.Geetha Yeruva Foundation for Children in Need Rosie & Carlito We thought that Carlito was finally staying in his cage and had stopped picking the lock. He duped us into thinking that we could leave the lock off the cage. Come to find out, he has been getting out of his cage and then going back and putting the latch back on, making it appear that he was never out. I surprised him one day out of the cage. He hurried back, shut the door, and closed the latches pretending that all was normal. Of course, in the meantime he had been helping himself to treats. Well as a result, it is back to the lock and chain. Taize Experience the presence of God in the quiet of prayer and song; plan to attend Evening Prayer with music from Taize on Monday, February 18 and Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 pm in the church. Come see what we are all about! Open House is from 7 to 8:30 pm. Catholic Schools Week What a wonderful week we had celebrating Catholic Schools Week! Our focus was on our faith as we began the week with a prayer service reminding us to light the way. On Tuesday, Monsignor celebrated a wonderful Mass for all of us at the Grade School. Later in the week we honored our students with a special treat and spirit dress. We wrapped up the week hugging our school and singing the Shrine Catholic School Fight Song. Upcoming Dates 2/6 8:30 am Ash Wednesday, GS Mass 2/8 4:30-7:30 pm Parish Bakes Begin 2/18-20 No School, Winter Break Academy Update For the eighth graders, religion class does not revolve around vocabulary, names and dates. Mrs. Kathy Sparks has taken the eighth graders to a new place in their classes: the state of meditation. This is a technique that has been around for quite some time. It involves the students sitting quietly, music being optional, and visualizing their encounters with God. Mrs. Sparks is a master at walking the students through their meditation where they look back at their day and recognize God in all the little happenings. In a time when middle schoolers are branching out and learning more about their faith than ever before, the meditation really helps to bring the kids back to their faith. Mrs. Sparks says, The older and busier these kids get, the harder it is to find God in their lives. They need it more now and I think it becomes a lifeline for them. So far the classes have responded very favorably. The meditation gives them a chance to take a break form the sports and extracurricular activities and to really focus on God. Other than meditating, the religion classes are working on their church membership and participation. Confirmation is coming up and the Academy students are well on their way in developing and growing in their faith. 7 February 3, 2008 Page 7 Lending Library T h e 3 5 t h anniversary of the infamous Roe vs.. Wade decision making abortion legal for the full nine months of pregnancy was on Jan. 22. Maybe you saw some of coverage of the March for Life in Washington, with up to 225,000 marchers, or the one on the West Coast with about 35,000. Related to that is the newly arrived DVD entitled, A Distant Thunder. It is a compelling drama about a "prochoice" woman attorney in a partial birth abortion case, with an incredible, unexpected twist. One reviewer stated that "It's engrossing, terrifying, and convincing. It will move you; it will change you." It is a short movie, and after you watch it, be sure to go back and watch the commentaries by the film's writer/ director, as well as the one with cast members, in order for the full impact to sink in! It is powerful. Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 Noon, in the Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). 8 Page 8 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Growing in Faith as a Family Parents are the first witnesses of the faith to their children. The love between a mother and father mirrors the love that flows between God the Father, through the Son to the Holy Spirit, guiding us back to the Father. This example of love in the home, called the domestic church, helps to build a strong foundation of faith for children as they enter into formal religious education, whether through a parochial school or religious formation setting. As I travel around the Archdiocese visiting parishes as part of the Mobile Evangelization Team, I am often approached by parents who ask, What programs should our parish have so my children can be strong in their Catholic faith? While solid parish programs are important, the most important element in a child s development is the witness of faith by their parents. I recently came across an article on raising children where the author asks, Are we raising our children to enter Harvard or Heaven? In today s world, we want our kids to get into the best schools, play on the best sports teams, and take them to dance and music lessons so they can develop their talents. We load our calendars with activities intent on developing our children s intellectual, artistic, and athletic ability, but do we ever ask ourselves what are we doing for their soul? Do we worry if we are giving our children a solid foundation in the faith that will lead to eternal life with Christ in heaven? All the camps, trips, games, and honors will mean nothing if we lose our soul (and our child s) in the process. Talking about our beliefs can be difficult as it forces us to search deep into our hearts, examining the commitment we have to truly live as a disciple of Jesus. Sharing with our children why we believe in God and the importance of faith in our life helps our children to understand why practicing the faith is important. Lent provides us an opportunity to examine our convictions. Is God at the center of our life? Do we have a solid relationship with Jesus? Do the decisions we make, hobbies and activities we partake in, and friends we keep aid us in our desire to grow in holiness? Do we take time to strengthen our relationship with Christ through prayer? Do we gather each week as a family for worship with the community of faith? Do we set an example of Christian discipleship in our home? St. Francis of Assisi said, Preach the Gospel always, and when necessary, use words. As parents, our example of living the faith through our daily activities is a much stronger lesson to our children than any parish program can provide and one that will reap eternal rewards.
