1 Shrine Herald March 7, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Lent 2010 On the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent, we have the option in the Lectionary to use the readings of the Year A cycle of readings. It is strongly recommended that these readings be used for the Masses where the Scrutinies of the Elect and Candidates take place. Here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower we will be using the readings for Year A. On this Third Sunday of Lent, the Gospel reading is taken from John. It is the Gospel of the Samaritan Woman at the Well. Like the Israelites in the desert, we thirst and cry out Give us water so that we may drink. Jesus responds with the proclamation that He is the Living Water. The water that I shall give will become a spring of eternal life. The elect will begin to share in the eternal life of Jesus through the waters of Baptism. We renew our Baptismal Promises at Easter, renewing our faith in the Risen Lord Jesus, and immersing ourselves more deeply in Christ. Lenten Wednesday This Wednesday evening at 7 pm, Rev. Steven Kallabat, Pastor Mar Addai Parish- Oak Park of the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle, will celebrate Mass according to the Chaldean Rite of the Catholic Church. This is a great opportunity to experience the faith of our fellow Catholics of the Eastern Rite. It helps us to understand the breadth and depth of our Catholic Faith and the universality of the Church. Lenten Friday After the Fish Bake on Friday evening, come and make the Way of the Cross in the Church at 7:30 pm. We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Theology of the Body Royal Oak, MI Third Sunday of Lent Please check the information in this issue of the Shrine Herald on the sessions to be held on March 19 and 20 explaining John Paul II s Theology of the Body. At the same time, no other natural force has been more destructive than water. Water can be a softspoken meandering brook that babbles to us in our reverie, or a thundering torrent. It can be hidden within billowy clouds, disguised as a gentle mist, glittering snow and ice, or seen as delicate drops of dew on the petals of a rose. Water has many faces, many moods, and is a gift that should never be taken for granted. Sometimes, we have trouble living with it, but we cannot live without it. It is no accident that throughout Scripture water has become such a powerful symbol of God s creative force. He uses it as a craftsman uses a favorite and familiar tool to fashion perfection with his hands. Water is never passive. It is always in action like the endless ebb and flow of the oceans. Water is constantly moving, changing form, and affecting whatever it touches. Water cleanses and purifies, it helps heal, it nurtures life, and is often the agent that destroys life so that new and stronger life might emerge. It seems that only God controls water. Jesus often chose water, this most versatile and powerful natural element, to play a key part in His miracles, and to show that He had the power not only over it, but over all creation. He changed water into wine at the wedding feast of Cana. He calmed a raging Sea of Galilee and then walked calmly on its surface. Today in the Gospel, He asks a Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob for a drink of water, and then offered her in return Living Water working a spiritual miracle of conversion. And on Good Friday when he died, the sky seemed to weep, mixing its tears with the tiny drops of water that fell from His side, spreading His blood across a parched, love-starved earth. Water indeed is a powerful symbol of God s presence in the world and in our lives. It is a natural reality through which we get a glimpse of the awesome nature of God, Himself. As we journey through this third week of Lent, we are more conscious of the role water has played in the life of Christ, how it has made us His brothers and sisters through Baptism, and how it can help us keep our minds focused on God as we continue our own journey to Jerusalem and the Cross. IMPORTANT NOTICE: National Shrine Church Hours In order to maintain the security and safety of all parishioners and visitors to the National Shrine of the Little Flower Church, Church doors will be locked at 5 pm on weekdays. For those groups who will be using the Church after 5 pm, please use the Heritage Hall entrance. Thank you for your cooperation. - Kevin Sutherland, Facilities Administrator Let s Talk Family Planning Lent is a time to evaluate the way we live our lives. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We are responsible for taking good care of our bodies. Are the foods we eat and the environment we expose ourselves to harming our fertility? Did you know that olives are good for female fertility and figs are good for male fertility? Did you know that plastics contain a form of estrogen that negatively affects a person s fertility? Educate yourself. Find out how NFP helps couples identify ways to naturally enhance their fertility. For more information, call or visit our web page at

He has experienced the love of Christ in the missions of Haiti, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic as well as within the realms of Young Adult and Parish ministry in Philadelphia. Bill holds an Associates Degree in Visual Arts, a Bachelors in Philosophy and a Masters in Systematic Theology. He teaches theology at Malvern Preparatory High School and lives in Lansdowne, PA with his wife, Rebecca. The presentation on Friday evening is intended for young adults both married and single. It is intended to provide an informal and relaxed atmosphere to delve into some fairly heavy theological issues regarding Catholic Teaching and human sexuality. The presentation on Saturday morning will be very informative introduction to the Theology of the Body of John Paul II. This session is a MUST for parents, educators, and interested parties over the age of 17. Rosie & Carlito I think I need to get my head examined. Father Mąka s Russia and Hashim are expecting puppies. There is a good chance that Rosie may get a little (soon to be bigger) brother. Stay tuned for further developments. Many people wrote me and said I was in the St. Thérèse chapel and that it wasn t a pool, but a baptismal font where babies and adults are Baptized. When that happens, the stain of original sin is washed away. You also mentioned that it was only built about nine years ago. Before that, we used a big gold bowl near the altar, and before that, they used a marble Baptismal Font that was in the St. Thérèse Benedicta chapel. When they made this new font, they recycled the old font. On the floor of the pool area is the top of the original font. Have you ever noticed that? The base of the waterfall area was the original font s base. Well, that s good for you humans, but where s a dog supposed to take a bath??? I guess I will have to wait until Monsignor takes me to the lake house again (when it s warm). By the way, on the other side of the church is a statue of some man. There are pictures of some men dressed in ties around him. Do you know who he is? Why is he important? Please me at rosie@shrinechurch.com.

5 March 7, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "Now the woman is aware of the real thirst by which she is driven. Hence she can at last learn what it is for which the thirst thirsts. It is the purpose and meaning of all catechesis to lead to this thirst." - Pope Benedict XVI "...In this way, the woman is made aware of what in actuality she has always known but to which she has not always adverted: that she thirsts for life itself and all the assuaging that she seeks and finds cannot slake this living, elemental thirst. There comes to light the real dilemma, the deep-seated waywardness, of her existence: she is brought face to face with herself. In general, we can reduce what is happening to the formula: one must know oneself as one really is if one is to know God. The primordial experience of all experiences is that man himself is the place in which and through which he experiences God. The woman stands face to face with herself. It is no longer a question now of something but of the depths of the I itself and, consequently, of the radical poverty that is man's I-myself. The question of all questions arises always and of necessity: the question about oneself becomes a question about God...Only at this point does the offering of Jesus' true gift become possible. " - Pope Benedict XVI Open hours: Sunday, midnight, 2 pm; Monday, 1 am; Thursday, noon; and Saturday, 5 pm. Partners are desired for the following Holy Hours: Sunday, 2, 5, 6 pm; Monday, 10 am; Wednesday, 4 pm; Thursday, 7 and 11 am; Friday, 4 pm; and the 1 pm hour on Sunday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday; and the 7 pm hour on Sunday. Health Care, Mercy and Justice: You Can Play a Role In the words of the U.S. bishops: Health care is so important for full human dignity and so necessary for the proper development of life that it is a fundamental right of every human being. As Congress continues its path toward a health care plan, it s important to know that the Church sees health care as a basic human right that needs to be judiciously implemented to protect life at all stages, adequately care for the poor, and maintain religious freedom for patients and healthcare workers. Life Matters As we have seen in the last few months, ordinary citizens are joining together to speak up about health care reform. Everyone has a voice and united they can make a difference. This same passion needs to be applied to the daily killing of babies in our neighborhoods. While you may not think abortion impacts you as directly as health care, you are mistaken. This economic crisis is only the beginning of the long-term effects of the loss of so much precious life. Your action and voice are critical to the conversion of our country. In it "he shares our common human weaknesses and frailties, made newly recognizable by opportunities to open one's heart to the grace and power of God's love... 8 Page 8 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Wednesday Lenten Liturgies at the National Shrine March 10 The Chaldean Catholic Church Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle (Michigan) Celebrant: Rev. Stephen Kallabat, Pastor Mar Addai Parish, Oak Park, Michigan Chaldean Americans come from modern day Iraq. Approximately 80,000 live in the Detroit area, with much smaller populations in Chicago, as well as California, and Oaxaca, Mexico. Chaldeans are Roman Catholic, and also differ from other Iraqis in that their ancestral language is not Arabic but a dialect of Aramaic, also referred to as Chaldean, Assyrian, or Syriac. Chaldean Americans are a highly religious people proud of their Christian heritage. According to legend, they were converted to Christianity by the Apostle Thomas. (St. Addai, an associate of Thomas, is revered as a Chaldean patron.) In the third century, they followed Nestorius, a patriarch of Constantinople who was declared a heretic by the Roman Church for teaching that Jesus Christ was not concurrently God and man. This division between the followers of Nestorius in the East and Rome lasted until 1445, when some Chaldeans were received back into the Roman Church by Pope Eugenius IV. They were permitted to retain their historic rituals and the Chaldean/Aramaic language for mass and other ceremonies. Searching for an appropriate name to call this new Catholic rite, the Pope focused on their historic homeland, which in ancient times had been the land of the Babylonians, Assyrians, and Chaldeans. It was also the historic homeland of the prophet Abraham, who came from Ur, a city of the Chaldeans. Hence, the Pope chose "Chaldean" as the name for the new Catholic rite. Over 95 percent of Chaldeans in the Detroit community can trace their origin to a single town, Telkaif, which is one of several Christian towns in the northern Iraqi province of Mosul, near the ruins of the ancient city of Nineveh. Some of the earliest members of Detroit's Chaldean American community recall hearing stories from their grandparents about the conversion of their town from Nestorianism in about 1830, when the entire town recognized the Roman Pontiff as the head of the Church. Most modern-day immigrants speak Arabic, but the earliest Chaldean immigrants spoke only Chaldean, which they also call "Jesus language," since it is believed to be the language that Jesus Christ spoke during his life. As full members of the Roman Catholic Church, Chaldeans follow the same rules and hold the same beliefs as other Catholics. However, they have their own leader, or patriarch, and the rituals used in their mass and other ceremonies are quite different from those practiced in the Western Church. Originally, they Lenten Schedule 2010 Penance Services: March 26, 12 Noon in the church March 30, 7:30 pm in the church Stations of the Cross, Fridays at 7:30 pm Palm Sunday, March 28, 2010 Regularly scheduled Sunday Masses Holy Thursday, April 1, :30 am Morning Prayer 7 pm Mass of the Lord s Supper Good Friday, April 2, :30 am Morning Prayer 12 Noon Stations of the Cross 1 pm Liturgy of the Passion Holy Saturday, April 3, :30 am Morning Prayer 11 am Blessing of the Baskets Easter Vigil, 8:30 pm Easter Sunday, April 4, :30, 9 and 10:45 am conducted services in the historic Chaldean/Aramaic language. Now, many services are conducted in Arabic or English for American-born children of Chaldean ancestry. The first Chaldean Church in the United States was founded in 1947 in Detroit. It was named "Mother of God," thus reaffirming the Chaldean split with their Nestorian heritage and their unity with Catholicism. More recently, the Church moved to Southfield, Michigan and was elevated to the status of a cathedral (Our Lady of Chaldeans Cathedral) when the Chaldean diocese of the United States was formed under the leadership of Chaldean Bishop Ibrahim Ibrahim. The National Shrine Parish Family again welcomes our Chaldean brothers and sisters and is grateful for the opportunity to share their rich Catholic tradition at Mass on Wednesday, March 10 at 7 pm. We especially look forward to hearing the words of consecration in Aramaic as Jesus, himself, would have said them at the last Supper.

15 March 7, 2010 Page 15 Colorectal Cancer Screening Kits March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Again this year, St. Joseph Mercy Hospital-Oakland is supplying us with free Screening Kits. These will be available March 1-31, at the Parish Office during regular business hours. With questions or for further information, call Muriel O Donnell, RN: Miscarriage Ministry I was nine weeks along and lying on the exam table, waiting patiently to hear my baby s heartbeat for the first time. The doctor looked concerned and compassionate as she said: I m sorry; your baby has no heartbeat. It took a minute...a very long minute...to sink in. That was certainly not what I was expecting to hear. My options were explained. I tried to pay attention, but I was in a haze. After composing myself, I looked at my midwife and asked, If I choose to go the hospital, what happens to the remains? And she didn t know. She didn t know? Of all that was happening, this was the part I had the hardest time grasping. Why didn t she know? I hadn t just lost an appendix, a limb, or a piece of damaged tissue, I had lost a child. I went home, told my husband, searched the internet for anonymous support, hoping for answers. I had so many questions. Unfortunately, lots of women have been in my shoes. By the grace of God, we were able to get our baby s remains from the hospital. My husband called Sister Noreen, and from that point on, our story was headed for a happy ending. She immediately directed us to Sullivan s Funeral Home. They donated a small burial box for the remains and Holy Sepulchre Cemetery offered a burial plot free of charge. Sister came to the graveside and performed a beautiful, simple, ceremony. Our baby was laid to rest. Our baby was sent home to God. In talking with Sister later, I learned that I was the first woman to call her after a miscarriage. Ours was the first early term burial she had been part of. What do other women do? I asked her. She wondered, too. There is work to be done to help others suffering the loss of miscarriage. But I need help getting started. Have you or someone you know had a miscarriage? Would you be willing to share your story? Talk about what helped you get through it? What was the hardest part? What do you wish could have gone differently? Do you have ideas how to help others who have miscarried? If interested, please Colleen Graveline at zeltcoll@hotmail.com or call to set up a meeting. Our church will help us.

16 Page 16 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Grade School Happenings Third Grade Lent is the focus of our religion as we travel in Jesus footsteps on our way to Easter. We joined with all of the Grade School last week for Stations of the Cross and will be doing that again this month on March 12 and March 26. All parishioners are invited to join us these Fridays. In addition to Lenten prayer and activities, students created projects illustrating the precepts of the Church and how we live them. We had a wonderful time on our recent trip to the Cranbrook Institute of Science. The students participated in two programs about physics and bug predators. We rounded out our trip with a visit to the museum and the planetarium. Since we are learning about the planets in school, the planetarium visit was especially beneficial to all of us. In reading, students have moved out of the reading anthology to Beverly Cleary s book, Ribsy. All of us are enjoying getting to know all of the characters. Recently in writing, the students used the Six Traits to write a persuasive paper. They also used the Six Traits to compare and contrast two different animals. We are definitely writing across the curriculum! Students are on the fast track to memorizing their multiplication facts and are now moving into division. Naturally, addition and subtraction facts are reviewed, too. We are working hard to prepare the students for fourth grade which is right around the corner.
