3 I didn t get the chance to write about last week s readings and so, I risk being less than topical. However, in the spirit of fraternal correction that we heard about a week ago, please bear with me. One thing that parents ask both my wife and I over and over is about how we are to dress when we come to mass on Sunday. Each year for the past 5 years we have worked with children who are receiving their sacraments, and both parents and kids ask what they should wear. We always ask them to look at the priest and deacon and see the beautiful long garments they wear. We also ask them how they might dress if they were meeting the president or a king or even going to a wedding. Their responses are always a suit or a long beautiful dress or really nice. We smile at them and ask them who they are visiting at church? It soon begins to sink in and we hear them say Jesus or the King of the universe! And they realize that Jesus is far more wonderful and awesome than any king or president and deserves something better than just our everyday clothes. Where am I headed? Yes you can argue that at least we are coming to mass, but my challenge is to take a look again at the last wedding that you may have attended. The mass is like being in heaven and being at the wedding feast of the Lamb. Please pray about how you and your children dress and help them to see why we should be respectful of the creator of the universe! 5 "Jesus Christ has taken the lead on the way of the cross. He has suffered first. He does not drive us toward suffering but shares it with us, wanting us to have life and to have it in abundance." "By dying on the cross, Christ reveals to us the meaning of our suffering. In His Passion, we find the encouragement and strength to avoid every temptation to bitterness and, through pain, to grow into a new life. Suffering is an invitation to be like the Son by doing the will of the Father. We are offered the opportunity to imitate Christ, who died to redeem mankind from sin. Thus the Father wished suffering to enrich the individual and the whole Church." --Saint John Paul II Please call Marie Lama at if you are able to help with any of the following Holy Hours. 7 October 1st is the feast day of St. Therese of Lisieux, our Parish patron. You can choose from a whole shelf of books to learn more about her. One quick read is Thoughts of St. Therese. "Composed of 328 brief quotations, arranged under 20 different topics... contains her own words and writings. This book will be a revelation to many that [she]... having lived and taught "The Little Way of Spiritual Childhood"... was nevertheless an intrepid, ardent, dedicated and disciplined soul... she totally embraced suffering for the love of God... acquired a profound Catholic wisdom untypical of a young woman who lived to only 24 years old." (Back cover) Section 9, Saints. Library hours are: Sundays from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. and Fridays from 9:15 A.M. to noon, in the Conference Center, Room C (across from the alley from the Northwood parking lot). 8 Preschool Religious Formation Our first class is Sunday, September 28 in the Youth Room. All registered families should have received a letter with details about the start of classes. We look forward to seeing all of the smiling faces! Elementary Religious Formation and Sacramental Preparation Religious Formation Classes Start September 22 for Grades K - 8. Our parent meeting and first day of class is Monday, September 22 for grades K through 8. All grades will meet at Shrine Catholic Grade School for this day only. Details have been mailed home this past week to those who have registered their children for the school year. If you have not registered your child(ren), please do so ASAP as some sessions are full! Questions? Contact Renee Cramer at rcramer@shrinechurch.com or call Late Registrations being accepted now! The Religious Formation office has been busily planning, ordering supplies and getting staff in place for our upcoming formation year based on our current enrollment. Late registrations that include $105 per child payment are being accepted and processed at this time. (Please note that the tuition is $210 per child for those not registered as Shrine parishioners.) For grades K - 6, choice of session time cannot be guaranteed for those registering after the August 15 due date. Do not delay as some sessions are full! For a registration packet or for more information, please contact Renee Cramer at rcramer@shrinechurch.com or call Special Needs Class At the National Shrine of the Little Flower we want all children to have a chance to learn about Christ and be prepared to receive the Sacraments our Lord gave us. Deacon Tom and Barb Avery have been teaching a class for 3 years now for children with Special Needs who need more attention and individualized lessons. We have worked with children having ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, and Cognitive impairment with great success. Our class has become a family and the children look forward to seeing each other each week! Read some of the testimonies of parents whose children attend our class. Our Son has been able to learn the faith in a deeper way in a loving nurturing environment. He has been able to learn more about his faith with individualized attention, where he would not have gotten that in a typical Religion classroom. He would not have been allowed the personal care and environment of acceptance. Classes are hands on which is so important for children with ADHD. This class helps him feel a part of the whole church community. He has made good friends with the other children and sees them at Mass. The parents we have met have enriched my life and encourage us to never miss class. My son has attended the special needs class for 3 years and it has helped him so much with coming closer to God. We know he would never been able to function in a regular classroom with Autism. He now loves going to Church and class. He has made special friends there. All the kids love being together and work well with one another. Deacon Tom and Barb do a super job helping the kids to see the world through the eyes of God. A very special religious formation class takes place on Wednesdays. My daughter 10 yrs. old is diagnosed with Autism and has been a part of the class for 3 years. Deacon Tom and Barb have exceeded the expectations that I had as a parent. Our class has become a family. Our children are all on track and receiving the Sacraments! I don t believe my daughter would have fared well in the regular Religion class. She has received a more individualized focused approach. Without the constant continual re-presenting of information in different ways our children would be lost. Shrine should be commended for offering such an opportunity, and Deacon Tom and Barb for their patience, their dedication, and love for this very special gift they have given to our children. Please join our family if this sound likes a class that could bring your child closer to Christ! God Bless, Deacon Tom and Barb Avery Attention Parents of Kindergarteners! Did you know that two years of preparation is required before receiving First Holy Communion? In order for your child to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion at the traditional time of second grade, he/ she must attend Religious Formation classes or Catholic school starting in the fall of first grade. P l e a s e c o n t a c t R e n e e C r a m e r a t rcramer@shrinechurch.com or for a new student registration packet. 15 NOW IS THE TIME TO REGISTER! The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a six-month long religious instruction program and conversion process leading to full participation in the Catholic Church for the non-baptized as well as those already validly baptized in separated Christian churches. It is also a preparation for adult Catholics who have never been confirmed, and an excellent renewal experience for Catholics returning to the Church. It is an exciting personal and communal journey leading to the transformation of mind and spirit by the power of the Holy Spirit. All adults who need one or all of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist) are invited and encouraged to join this exciting program, which will begin this year on Sunday, September 14. We meet every Sunday morning in the Parish Conference Center from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm until Easter. Learning the real facts about the Catholic Faith through the combined lenses of philosophy, theology, Scripture and history is a most exciting and challenging experience and, once begun, the thrill of discovery never stops. (Smile! There are no exams) The RCIA is a friendly process that begins with a time of honest inquiry and review of topics like the existence of God, nature of Man, mystery of creation, origin of evil and suffering, and the life of Jesus (Incarnation, Passion & Death, Resurrection, Ascension, and Pentecost) At the end of this period, if candidates for Baptism express their intention to become Catholic, they are accepted into the order of Catechumens, anointed with the Sign of the Cross, and receive special blessings and a Bible. This is a critical time of nurturing, deep spiritual growth, and continuing personal conversion for all involved in the program. On the first Sunday of Lent, all participants visit the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral to appear before Archbishop Vigneron as a formal expression of their intention to become full members of the Church. This entire period of Lent will be filled with special blessings, called scrutinies, and become a time of intense personal reflection and prayer. At the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday evening, all will receive those sacraments which will bring them into full communion with the Catholic Church. A final brief period immediately following Easter provides an opportunity for shared reflections on the journey to faith and explores ways to help live as an active Catholic. If you have questions, call the rectory office at , talk to one of our friendly priests, or call John LaCroix directly at You may also simply come to the Parish Conference Center on any Sunday morning beginning September 14 at 10:15 am. All are welcome. Bring a friend! Come see where time well spent will lead.
