1 Shrine Herald March 14, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Theology of the Body Pope John Paul II wrote extensively about the Theology of the Body and Human Sexuality. As a church we are beginning to plumb the depths and the significance of his profound teaching in this area. True happiness and fulfillment is found in a proper respect for the dignity of our bodies and the realization that true love is the result of being in union with Christ carrying out the will of God our Father. This Friday evening, March 19, Bill Donaghy of the Institute of the Theology of the Body will have a frank discussion on the Theology of the Body and how it impacts our relationships and our lives in an informal open forum. All young adults both single and married are invited to attend in Shrine Catholic High School Student Center from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. On Saturday morning, March 20, from 9 am to 12:30 pm, Bill will give an introduction to the Theology of the Body talking about God, sex, and the meaning of life. This session is meant for anyone 17 years of age and over. It is especially useful for parents, teachers, and those seeking to find their way in life. It will take place in the performing arts center of Shrine Catholic High School. Please see the notice in this issue of the Herald. Sr. Patricia Marie Donnelly S.C. It is simply impossible. In human terms we try to describe this mystery by saying that God is Truth, Goodness and Beauty. These words help because they have such broad far-reaching meaning. They express abstract ideas and therefore seem to describe best this infinite all-powerful God whose spiritual being is so far removed from our limited human understanding. But if the infinite nature of God could be captured and contained in a single human word, that word would be LIGHT. We could say: God is Light. What a great metaphor! In Genesis, God s first creative act is to say: Let there be light, and there was light. In that first outpouring of infinite creative love, he shared his very being with all creation that would follow. Everything willed into existence would be in its own unique way a tiny, but good reflection of divine glory. Yes, it helps to think of God as eternal, infinite, dazzling light. In the natural order, light is one of the most unnatural mystifying wonders. We study its properties in Physics realizing that although it can be measured in terms of speed and wave lengths, and that it can be used seemingly in endless ways, it remains in great part an elusive mystery. There is so much about light that we do not understand, much like our experience with electricity, which somehow seems related to it. We have learned that only a small portion of the light spectrum is even visible to our human eyes and yet, we are dazzled by its beauty in the rainbow. So too are people of faith struck by the fleeting glimpses of the awesome majesty of God reflected in tiny bits throughout all creation -- infinitesimal shards of natural light reflecting the infinite brilliance of divine glory. Human eyes allow us to see light. Divine grace allows us to see God. In the vastness of space as it rapidly expands ever outward, we know of no other natural wonder that has traveled farther or faster in the universe. It goes where we cannot, where only angels move. Indeed, light is the one natural wonder that most reveals to us in human terms what our God must be like. Even so, it is also a weak comparison for our God travels much faster even than light the speed of thought. I am the light of the world, says the Lord; whoever follows me will have the light of life. Jesus uses the light metaphor many times to help us understand who he is and why he has come into the world. St. Paul uses it as well. Brothers and sisters: You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of the light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. Sight is the most precious of human senses because it allows us to know light and gives us the power to move freely in it. In today s gospel Jesus meets a man blind from birth, one who had never experienced light. Jesus opens his eyes and he sees. Can we even imagine his wonder in the light? With blind faith, humility, and obedience, he followed the words of Jesus: Go wash in the pool of Siloam. He did and came back able to see. The Pharisees would not believe nor even listen to this story of sight because they did not want to see nor accept the Light of the World. To accept meant to dim their own importance. So in this moment of exquisite joy, the man is threatened, ridiculed, condemned as a sinner, and thrown bodily from their midst. Jesus sought him out and offered a second gift, one that would now open his soul. Do you believe in the Son of man? Who is he sir, that I may believe in him? You have seen him, the one speaking with you is he. I do believe, Lord. In that moment the man saw Jesus with his eyes, and saw the face of God with the brilliant grace of faith. As we journey to Jerusalem and the Cross this Lenten season, are we walking in the light? Do we recognize the presence of Jesus in our world? Are we trying to see Jesus in others? Are we listening for the Spirit who whispers these special graces of insight? Do we accept the testimony of the man born blind, share his joy, and believe in the source of all light? Or will we close our eyes, ears, hearts, and minds like the Pharisees, and suffer his stinging rebuke: I told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again?

3 March 14, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Lent 2010 Wednesday evening Mass will be celebrated according to the Greek-Melkite Rite of the Catholic Church by Rev Michel Cheble, Pastor from Our Lady of Redemption Parish in Warren. You will find more information about the Greek-Melkite Rite in this issue of the Herald. It is another wonderful opportunity for all of us to become more aware of the rich and universal nature of our Catholic Church and our faith. Pilgrims Father Mąka has prepared a Pilgrimage Tour of Poland and Central Eastern Europe including Czestochowa, Krakow, Slovakia, Vienna, Salzburg, and Prague. Father Siaosi and I are sponsoring the pilgrimage along with him. It will be from September 19 to October 1 of this year. Look for the brochures in the vestibules of the church and at the rectory office for more information. Rosie & Carlito Father Mąka s dog, Russia, had 5 little puppies last Monday. Rosie is anxious to meet the puppies before the get to be bigger than she is, and they definitely will get bigger. Rosie is also enjoying the responses to her Herald column and her little foray into the world of journalism. I greet new parishioners that are registering to become members of our parish. Sometimes, they ask me about the church and the various statues. Behind the piano is St. Joseph. He s the foster father of Jesus and spouse of the Virgin Mary. He is also known for his carpentry skills and often cited as the patron saint of engineers, carpenters, and skilled tradesman. At this altar, we particularly see the carpentry and business aspects of St. Joseph on the panels on either side of his statue. He is holding an adze which is a tool for smoothing rough wood. By the way, St. Joseph s feast day is in just a couple of days. On a different note, I was roaming through the church and found some interesting words on one of the walls. Some were joy, patience, and peace. There were many pictures of birds in this area. Do you know where I was? Please me your answers at rosie@shrinechurch.com.

5 March 14, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "We have fallen prey to a progressive barbarization of our spiritual vision." "This is the authentic and central program of the Lenten Season: to listen to the Word of truth, to live, speak, and do the truth, to reject lies that poison humanity and are the door to all evils. It is urgent, therefore, during these forty days, to listen again to the Gospel, the Lord's Word, Word of truth, so that in every Christian, in each one of us, the awareness be reinforced of the truth that has been given, that He has given us, to live it and be His witnesses. Lent stimulates us to let the Word of God penetrate our life and in this way to know the fundamental truth: who we are, where we come from, where we must go, what path we must take in life. Thus, the Lenten season offers us an ascetic and liturgical journey that, helping us to open our eyes in face of our weakness, makes us open our hearts to the merciful love of Christ." - Pope Benedict XVI, Benedictus Open hours: Sunday, midnight, 2 pm; Monday, 1 am; Thursday, 10 am, noon; and Saturday, 5 pm. "Based on the memoirs of Lucia de Jesus dos Santos, and thousands of independent eye witness accounts, The 13 th Day is a dramatic retelling of the experiences of three shepherd children between May and October 1917." It is "stylistically beautiful and technically innovative... [in its use of] "state-of-the-art digital effects to create stunning images of the visions and the final miracle" (from the back cover). In t h e 2 3 p a g e c o m p a n i o n booklet about Fatima, there is an interesting excerpt from Bishop Fulton Sheen's book about "Mary and the Moslems", in which he mentions that "in the 19 th chapter of the Koran, there are forty-one verses on Jesus and Mary" that give "a strong defense of the Virginity of Mary". 8 Page 8 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Wednesday Lenten Liturgies at the National Shrine March 17 The Melkite Greek Catholic Church Eparchy of Newton, Massachusetts. Celebrant: Rev. Michel Cheble, Pastor Our Lady of Redemption Parish, Warren, Michigan Greek Melkites are among the earliest members of the Catholic Church. In order to understand their rich and courageous story, we must revisit ancient history of the Church, itself. In the earliest centuries of Christianity, the major centers of the Church were in the eastern cities of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. Each was headed by a Bishop with the title of Patriarch. Rome was the city in the West under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Rome, The Pope. The eastern cities referred to him as the Patriarch of the West. In the minds of many believers, especially in the east, these various patriarchates were completely autonomous though in full communion with each other. Thus, the Eastern Church is the title given to the Christian Church, which was originally a part of the eastern division of the Roman Empire. This was simply a geographical division corresponding to the separation of the Roman Empire into two parts, with Rome as the capital of the western part, and Constantinople as the capital of the eastern part. Problems began in the late third century with the rise of the Arian Heresy which denied the divinity of Christ. Many very technical and learned arguments followed in the attempt to explain the relationship between the Persons of the Trinity. The heresy was condemned by the First Council of Nicea, but the controversy did not end. The whole matter was politicized with bishops taking opposite sides, as well as several confusing middle positions. Roman Emperors even got involved, and though the doctrinal matter was finally resolved, the political fighting between eastern factions and the Papacy laid the groundwork for the official Eastern Schism of Michael Cerularius, Patriarch of Constantinople, was excommunicated by papal legates for opposing the use of unleavened bread by the Latin Church, and removing the Pope s name from the list of persons to be prayed for in the Eucharistic liturgy. The division remains to this day. Since the eastern churches were seen as autonomous, the excommunication of the Patriarch of Constantinople did not legally apply to the Patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. This was true, but since these patriarchates of the east were emotionally and physically closer to the Patriarch of Constantinople than to the Bishop of Rome, they became de facto separated from the papacy. They considered the Patriarch of Constantinople, First among Equals, and leader of the Church in the east without any authority or jurisdiction over their autonomous patriarchates. Despite dialogue, visible communion with Rome did not occur even though these Patriarchs were never officially separated from the papacy. Eventually, this split between those who recognized the papacy and those who did not resulted in the establishment of two separate patriarchartes, the Greek Orthodox and the Greek Catholic (Melkite). In the seventh century, the Greek Melkite Catholics of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem became part of the Islamic world in which they courageously assumed their new role as witnesses to Christ in the territory of Islam. The Melkite Church had provided the earliest translations of the Bible into Aramaic in 527 A.D., and now translated into Arabic the philosophical, medical and scientific heritage of ancient Greece. The Greek Melkites would struggle valiantly through many religious persecutions and political hardships under several conquerors until it could rise in the 18 th and 19 th centuries with its own independence and identity. Today the Melkite Church s patriarch, bishops, clergy and faithful are mostly Arabic speaking. Approximately 120,000 Melkites reside in the United States. The Eparchy of Newton under Archbishop Cyril Salim Bustros was established on June 28, 1976 reporting directly to the Holy See. It governs some 45 parishes spread throughout 21 states and is located in the Roslindale section of Boston, Massachusetts next to the Annunciation Melkite Catholic Cathedral. There are three Melkite parishes in Michigan: St. Joseph in Lansing, St. Michael in Plymouth, and Our Lady of Redemption in Warren. Our Shrine Parish Family extends a warm welcome to Father Michel Cheble and local Melkite parishioners, and look forward to the celebration of the Mass in the Melkite liturgy at 7 pm on Wednesday, March 17. In addition, Ted gave the young journalists from the Academy tips on how to conduct a great interview. While it is clear that Ted Nugent has a special place in his heart for all children, he did have one very special Academy student in the audience this week, his granddaughter, Riley. However you contributed, Thank You! Thank You! Some of you were coordinators, captains and team members. Some donated money, prepared meals, and volunteered labor over a long period of time. Some braved the cold on night watch. Some did the laundry each day. However you gave of yourself, your time and resources, you have served the poor. We remember that often we serve Jesus in distressing disguise. Several workers commented on the genuine hospitality and good sprit present as our church members joined in this wonderful ecumenical cooperation with other churches in true Christian witness!
