1 Shrine Herald February 1, 2009 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Archbishop Vigneron This past week, Archbishop Allen H Vigneron officially took possession of the Archdiocese of Detroit and was installed by His Eminence Adam Cardinal Maida and His Excellency Archbishop Pietro Sambi, Papal Nuncio to the United States. Blessed Sacrament Cathedral was packed. A large number of bishops, archbishops, priests, deacons, cardinals, and dignitaries were in attendance. Because there was not enough room for everyone who wanted to attend, Archbishop Vigneron will celebrate ten Masses of thanksgiving in different parts of the Archdiocese of Detroit. The first nine Masses are scheduled in the evening throughout the month of February. For a listing of the times and places, read the article on page 14 in this edition of the H e r a l d o r g o o n l i n e t o and click on the link to the Archdiocese of Detroit and the link to Welcoming Masses for more information. The last of the ten Masses will be celebrated here at the National Shrine of the Little Flower on Saturday, March 7, at 11:30 am. This celebration is open to everyone in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Catholic Schools Week This past week was a great week for our Shrine Catholic Schools. Last Sunday there was an outstanding concert given by all the school choirs. Last Tuesday we celebrated the 75 th Anniversary of Shrine Catholic Grade School. Wednesday we celebrated a special Mass with Shrine Catholic School Athletes. Thursday we celebrated a special Catholic Schools Week Mass at the High School and Academy. I am convinced that we as a parish can be truly proud of our schools and the students. Parish Mardi gras The Parish Council of the National Shrine of the Little Flower Parish invites all parishioners over 21 years of age to celebrate Mardi gras on Saturday, February 21 from 7:30 to 10:30 pm in the Shrine Catholic Grade School Gym. This is always a fun time for continued on page 3

That was just a sample of the letters received at the Parish Office in response to your great generosity for our Giving Tree Monetary Gifts. There are too many to publish here, but know that those who wrote are asking God to bless you for your generosity. During this wintry weather, you put your faith into many good works on behalf of people in great need. We reviewed the involvement and interests of our members in helping some of the most vulnerable people: the unborn babies, children and parents in need, our homeless population and those with special physical and emotional challenges. Based on need and our limited funds, this is how we distributed your donations. Mark your calendar now so that you will not miss the fun. Holy Land Pilgrimage Father Siaosi, Father Tomek Mąka and I are excited about the pilgrimage to Jordan and the Holy Land. The pilgrimage will be October 10 to October 25 this year. It includes first class hotels, breakfast and dinner every day, as well as all tips and surcharges. It is an all-inclusive 16-day package. This is one of those once in a lifetime experiences. We already have a number of people interested with some already having made their down payment. The number of places are limited and it will be strictly first come first taken. If you want more information, please refer to the bright lime green flyers in the vestibules. I hope that this week you will be able to view the details online at the parish web site. Rosie and Carlito Did someone say LENT? Poor Rosie, as soon as she hears that word she knows what is coming next. Inevitably, there will be treats on the floor to drool over but not touch until you get a dispensation. However, it is not really all that bad, in the end you always get the treats. After Lent, Easter will surely come. 5 February 1, 2009 Page 5 Marriage Enrichment Workshop Topic: Forgiveness in Marriage Date: February 11, 2009 Time: 7 to 8:30 pm at the National Shrine Conference Center Moderator: Fr. Lang IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE! Please come ready to ask questions on forgiveness and marriage. This workshop is meant to help couples deal with issues of forgiveness in one of the most important relationships we may have in this imperfect world we live. Should you have any questions please call Father Lang at ext Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Christ is our life,"st. Paul exclaims, because, as St. Thomas says: 'He is the source of our life.'" -Divine Intimacy "True, the Eucharistic Body of the Lord is meant to bring us together, so that we become his "true Body". But the gift of the Eucharist can do this only because in it the Lord give us HIS TRUE BODY. Only the true Body in the Sacrament can build up the true Body of the new City of God...Receiving the Eucharist does not mean eating a "thing-like" gift. No, there is a person-to-person exchange, a coming of the one into the other. The living Lord gives himself to me, enters into me, and invites me to surrender myself to him, so that the Apostle's words come true: 'It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.' Only thus is the reception of Holy Communion an act that elevates and transforms a man.'...thus adoration is not opposed to Communion, nor is it merely added to it. No, Communion only reaches its true depths when it is supported and surrounded by adoration....in this place the Lord is always waiting for me, calling me, wanting to make me "Eucharistic". In this way, he prepares me for the Eucharist, set me in motion toward His return." -The Spirit of the Liturgy, Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI Open hours: Thursday, 12 Noon; Friday, 3 and 11 am; and Saturdays, 2 and 6 pm. Partners are needed for Sunday, 6 pm and Wednesday 3 and 4 pm. Life Matters The word abortion has lost practically all its meaning. Not even the most vivid description, in words alone, can adequately convey the horror of this act of violence. Abortion is sugar-coated by rhetoric which hides its gruesome nature. What a pro-life person has in mind when he speaks about abortion and what the average American has in mind when he hears the word are two very different things. One of the key reasons the pro-life movement is not making more progress is that we so often assert before the public that abortion is an act of violence, but do not produce the evidence which would lead people to this conclusion. Photographic evidence is the most trusted source of information in any discipline. It transcends language and logic, and goes straight to the heart, where people are motivated to take action, instead of merely to the head, where people passively entertain all sorts of concepts without any commitment necessarily following. (Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director, Priests for Life; Photos in the dynamics of social reform ). There continues to be apathy among people about the killing of the unborn. We have reduced babies to experimental research material. People don t understand abortion and its effects on our society. Priests for Life has a project called Is This What you Mean? It aims to reveal the nature of the abortion procedure to the public. If someone hasn t actually seen abortion, it can become an abstract concept; something that can be put in the back of ones mind. If you have never seen the effects of an abortion, please go to the Priests for Life website ( and see the section America Will Not Reject Abortion Until America Sees Abortion! While these images will be difficult to see, we cannot assume we fully understand it until we see it. We need to shine the light on this horror; only then can we hope to educate others of its true violence. Crisis Pregnancy? Mother and Unborn Baby Care can help! Call Hurting from an abortion experience? Call Silent No More HELP Anointing of the Sick at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral The annual reception of the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of the Sick will be celebrated with a Eucharistic Liturgy including the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Msgr. Michael LeFevre will preside and anoint those who request the sacrament. A special blessing will be given for Caregivers. This annual event which is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit and the Knights and Dames of the Order of Malta, will take place at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament (corner of Trowbridge and Woodward in Dertoit) on February 8 at 11 am. Please call or to harning.michael@aod.org to reserve a place for those who will be anointed.

7 February 1, 2009 Page 7 Help Protect Life: FOCA Postcard Signing Please help to protect the lives of unborn children and the rights of Catholic medical professionals by signing postcards to our U.S. Senators and Representatives. The postcard mission, sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, demonstrates our Catholic opposition to the Freedom of Choice Act. The young adult pro-life group Veritas will have the postcards available in Heritage Hall after all Masses on Saturday, January 31 and Sunday, February 1. We kindly ask for a $1 donation to help cover the cost of postcards and stamps. The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) would set abortion as a fundamental right that the government must fund and promote. FOCA goes far beyond Roe v. Wade and would eliminate all current federal, state, and local restrictions on abortion including: bans on partial-birth abortion parental consent laws for minors informed consent laws and waiting periods abortion clinic regulations preventing government funding to health services that refuse to provide abortions denying the right of conscience to Catholic medical care providers The passage of FOCA would force Catholic hospitals nationwide to face the stark choice of being forced to perform abortions or closing down altogether. Congressional leaders have publicly urged the passage of FOCA in the past. We the people must use our prayers and petitions to convince our Senators and Representatives to protect the most vulnerable members of our society. I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me. One: decide to read one good book a month to learn more about your incredible Catholic faith. You'll find many categories to choose from at the Lending Library. Two: please look through your book shelves, DVD's and Videos to see if you might have some that are overdue and need to be returned to the Lending Library. You can drop them off at the parish office in Heritage Hall, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, 6:30 to 9 pm and Saturday 9 am to 2:30 pm or at the Lending Library during our regular hours. Master Plan The news is so positive The accolades for the new Field House at Shrine Catholic High School and Academy were so plentiful and positive, it was difficult to commit to one article. There will be a series of articles from various faculty, students and parents about the new facility. Our first response to the inquiry about what the new Field House means to the school was from Pete Donaldson, Shrine High School Athletic Director. Thank you National Shrine parish for this lovely new facility. Our old gym was too small and I was worry about the students safety when we used it. Now we have a beautiful new facility. Our first game against the Royal Oak (High School) Ravens was a success. The attendance was huge. Our next big game is Feb. 10 with Bishop Foley. The high school and academy have had many inquiries about the new Field House. It is an important tool for future school recruitment. Another response came from the Boys Varsity Basketball Coach, Mike Massucci, a 14-year faculty member. The new Field House breathes new energy into our basketball program. The electricity from the students is something that I have never seen. It instills a sense of pride in our players. Other schools that we play are anxious to see the facility. Our kids are anxious to show it off. It is a remarkable addition to the school. Bless everyone who paid to make this happen. Linda McIntyre, a 32-year veteran of Shrine Schools and the Physical Education teacher at the high school and academy, had this to say. For 30 years there has been talk about adding a field house to the school. It was so nice in August, when we returned to campus and saw the structure being built. There is more opportunity for all of the students to participate in gym. The facility is large enough to have two games (four teams) going at once. It is also safer for our students. The walls and the bleachers were too close in the old gym, but this is no longer an issue. Thank you everyone for the new field house. Next week we will talk to some of the students using the new field House. Their enthusiasm makes the cost and the construction all worth it all. Shrine Catholic students our parish s future! Please visit to print out a form and sign up to host the Cup of Blessing.

13 February 1, 2009 Page 13 Grade School Happenings Grade Six In religion class, the sixth graders have been learning all about vocations. We discuss the differences between married life, single life, religious life and the priesthood. We are also studying the Ten Commandments. In English the students are learning all about research papers, as we will begin writing one very soon! We are getting them ready for the Academy! In social studies the students are traveling through time and have recently learned about ancient Chinese Dynasties. The year was 200 B.C. They focused on the Shang and Han dynasties and compared their form of government with our government. They will conclude this unit with recognition of the Chinese New Year. Soon, we will begin learning about ancient Greece, and the sixth graders will create their very own Olympic competition. In reading class students recently completed a book report presentation and are currently reading a variety of expository non-fiction. The latest reading made the students aware of what life was like for sixth graders during the 1800 s. Students created computer photo stories in science, depicting catastrophes to complement our study of geology. We enjoyed viewing the presentations and learning more about our restless earth. In math class we have explored different types of graphs. We understand that graphs are a neat and organized way to display data. We also analyzed misleading graphs and interpreted bias in some graphs. In addition to their studies, sixth graders have been busy acting as Safety Patrol helpers, recyclers, and visiting Beaumont patients this year. We are truly going the extra mile in knowledge, friendship and faith! Mrs. Carey Mrs. Hazen Mrs. Pierscinski Upcoming Dates Feb. 5 7:00 pm New Family Open House Academy Update The Academy students were busy with many activities during Catholic Schools Week including attending masses and gathering items for a local shelter. Most students went to both the joint Shrine Catholic High School and Academy mass and the evening Shrine Catholic Athletes Mass to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Many of our students are not only academically focused but also athletically involved in school, said Mrs. Midge Knudson, eighth grade history and literature teacher. The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) also organized an event for Catholic Schools Week. NJHS president, Erin Hull 13, and vice president, Elizabeth Pattyn 13, held a meeting on January 22 that discussed the details of the day. Called Crazy Hat/Sock Day, students were asked to bring in hats, gloves, socks, and personal hygiene items to be donated to the South Oakland Shelter on Tuesday, January 27. In return, students were allowed to wear crazy hats and/or socks of their own. In literature class, eighth grade students are in the middle of Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt, which ties into their study of the Civil War in their history class. Students created their own newspaper with a front page story that gave a detailed account of the battle at Fort Sumter in In addition to these assignments, students are also making notecards for their research papers. English teacher Mrs. Lisa Lachapelle and science teacher Mr. Tim Dobrzeniecki are working together by collaborating what is being learned in both classes for the research papers. The students are studying nutrition and functions of the human body in their science classes, said Mrs. Knudson. From that information, they chose related topics for their papers. - Written by Alexandra Moulton Vocations! Vocations! Vocations! If you are interested in supporting Vocations to the Priesthood and Religious life, the Detroit Oakland Serra Club may be what you are looking for You are invited to a Get Acquainted meeting on Tuesday, February 17 at Manresa (Woodward at Big Beaver NW corner). It all gets started with Mass at 5:30 pm followed by dinner and a short meeting All are welcome! Please RSVP to Tom Ryan at or tjr1142@yahoo.com.

14 Page 14 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Knights of Columbus Last Saturday we held our annual Knights of Columbus basketball free throw contest. It was held at the new field house. The winners of the local competition will now compete against the winners of the neighboring parishes. That competition will take place on February 14 at 9 am at the Shrine Catholic field house again. All students who competed were winners. They came out and did their best. We wish the winners good luck in the next three rounds. This year, for the first time, we will be hosting the championship round for the whole Archdiocese of Detroit. It was quite an honor to be chosen to be the host. In years past this competition had always been at St Clement in Romeo. The Archdiocese Championship will take place on February 28 at the field house. Start time is again at 9 am. We will need help at the next two levels of competition. We need council members to help as judges, with scoring and registration. We appreciate all of the help we received in the initial round of competition. Our first round winners this year are: Boys Girls Age 9 No Competition No Competition Age 10 Tom Peaslee Andrea Elmore Age 11 No Competition Haley Cyrocki Age 12 Sage Baltrusaitis No Competition Age 13 Paul Palmer No Competition Age 14 Michael Cyrocki No Competition On Sunday February 22, many of us will attend the State Chaplain's Tribute Banquet in Lincoln Park. The dinner itself includes the dinner and the open bar. At the State Chaplain's Tribute Dinner we will be presenting our State Chaplain with a scroll with the names of all new members that joined our brotherhood since July 1, Many new Brother Knights from the National Shrine Parish will have their names on that scroll. All Brother Knights and their spouses/significant others are welcome to attend. Please let us know of your intentions. The council will once again be presented with the State Chaplain's Award for excellence in membership activities. This is the fifth year in a row that we have qualified.
