1 Shrine Herald We proclaim Jesus as Lord and ourselves as servants for His sake. Royal Oak, MI January 17, 2010 Bearings Notes from Monsignor Easton Roe vs. Wade This Friday, January 22, is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade (1973). Abortion on demand remains our nation's legal policy because of this 1973 Supreme Court decisions that legalized abortion throughout pregnancy. Because of those decisions, many citizens believe that women have a moral right to abort their unborn children. This has led to erosion of respect for the right to life, which is bestowed by the Creator and cannot legitimately be denied by any nation or court. More than one and a half million unborn children in the United States continue to die each year by abortion, and increasing numbers of women suffer abortion's physical, emotional and spiritual pain. Often they suffer alone, deserted by men unwilling to acknowledge their own responsibilities as fathers. We who revere human life as created in the image and likeness of God have even more reason to take a stand. For us abortion is of overriding concern because it negates two of our most fundamental moral imperatives: respect for innocent life, and preferential concern for the weak and defenseless. As we said three years ago in reaffirming our Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities: "Because victims of abortion are the most vulnerable and defenseless members of the human family, it is imperative that we, as Christians called to serve the least among us, give urgent attention and priority to this issue. Our concern is intensified by the realization that a policy and practice allowing over one and a half million abortions annually cannot but diminish respect for life in other areas." No Catholic can responsibly take a "pro-choice" stand when the "choice" in question involves the taking of innocent human life. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time The bishops of the United States call upon us to observe January 22 as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion. It is to be a day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right of life. The 8:30 am Mass on Friday, January 22, will be a Mass for Peace and Justice as is recommended by the bishops. continued on page 3...

3 January 17, 2010 Page 3 continued from page 1 Bearings... Buildings and Grounds The management of our facilities is without a doubt a huge task. Our limited staff does what it can. Costs continue to increase. I am therefore very grateful to two volunteers who have taken on the job of assisting me in the administration of our facilities. Mr. Art Massucci has done and continues to do a magnificent job managing the North Campus with the High School and Academy. He oversees projects, preventative maintenance, and building expenditures. He is putting together manuals and schedules for on going maintenance of our entire North Campus. He is our go to person when it comes to the facilities of the North Campus, and is doing a great job. Mr. Kevin Sutherland is taking up the task of managing the facilities of the South Campus made up of the Church, Rectory Conference Center, and Grade School. I am convinced that his experience in management will help make our maintenance program more efficient, cost effective, and smoother running. I am most grateful to both of these men for generously volunteering their time and expertise to the parish in these matters. If they ask for help, please realize that they are doing it in the name of the parish and on my behalf. Although their monetary compensation is zero, their rewards are eternal. New Administrative Assistant Mrs. Anne Knapik is the new Office Administrator and Administrative Assistant for the National Shrine of the Little Flower. Anne will take up the responsibilities of Cheryl Popham who is leaving us to join the Carmelite Sisters as a postulant. Anne has a huge task and a tremendous amount of information to absorb in a short period. I am convinced that you will find her to be very efficient and helpful. Rest in Peace The father of Vicki Holtyn, who is the Herald and web site editor and the tuition manager, entered eternal life this past week at the age of 95. Please keep Vicki s family in your prayers. Rosie & Carlito For some of us the snow is an annoyance and a hazard. For Rosie it is a wonderful gift from God. She runs out into the yard and rolls in it, buries her head in it, and just thoroughly enjoys it. My mother s dog is the same with the snow. Maybe we can learn from the animals to not look for problems and to enjoy our surroundings more as a gift from God. 5 January 17, 2010 Page 5 Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration "O, Jesus, I beg You to transform my soul as You once transformed the water for the bride and bridegroom at Cana." 'The water was made wine.' A miracle much more wonderful than the one which Jesus performed at Cana is repeated daily on our altars; a little bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ, and given to us as Food for our souls. The Communion antiphon of today's Mass repeats the passage in the Gospel which speaks of the water made wine. Yes, for us preeminently, Jesus has 'kept the good wine until now.' It is the precious wine of the Holy Eucharist, inebriating our souls with His Body and Blood. There is another wonderful transformation which Jesus accomplishes in our souls by means of grace; the water of our poor, human nature becomes a sharer in God's divine nature; it is transformed into the sacred wine of the life of Christ Himself. Man becomes a member of Christ, the adopted child of God, the temple of the Holy Spirit. Today our Lady tells us how we can and should foster this precious transformation; she says to us as she once did to the servants at the Cana feast, 'Whatsoever He shall say to you, do ye.'..let us, then, with humble, docile hearts, with lively faith and perfect abandonment, entrust ourselves to Jesus through Mary's hands. - Divine Intimacy Open hours: Sunday, 2 pm; Monday, 1 and 6 am. All of these questions and more will be answered during Stewardship Weekend scheduled at all masses for the weekend of January 30. We look forward to seeing you there. Life Matters On January 22, we will commemorate the 37 th anniversary of our country s legal access to abortion. Not only have millions of innocent lives been taken, but millions of others have been scarred from its effects. On December 22, the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops sent a letter to the Senate strongly opposing passage of the bill because of its federal funding of abortion and strongly encouraged them to develop health care reform legislation that truly protects the life, dignity, health and consciences of all. On Christmas Eve, the U.S. Senate ignored the bishops and passed the legislation (H.R. 3590), the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Congressional Democratic leaders will now attempt to reconcile the Senate bill with the health care bill passed by the House of Representatives on November 7 (H.R. 3962). This process is expected to take a number of weeks, at least. After a final version of the bill is crafted by congressional Democratic leaders, it can only be sent to President Obama for his signature if it first receives approval from a majority in the House of Representatives and surmounts several 60-vote hurdles in the Senate. Your immediate action is required. While our Michigan Senators voted for the Senate bill, we MUST continue to tell them our opinion. Call and write them and express your disappointment on allowing your tax dollars to pay for abortions; ask their offices to record your opposition to the Senate bill. Also, send short letters to the "letters to the editor" of your local newspapers to educate others regarding the pro-abortion components of this health care reform. The time to speak for those most vulnerable is now. Do not let another Roe vs. Wade happen again without a fight; millions of lives are at risk. Crisis Pregnancy? 7 January 17, 2010 Page 7 Lending Library Letters: A Collection of Short Letters From Fr. John Corapi, is a small book which contains "some of the s and letters written by Fr. Corapi from They cover a wide range of topics, including doctrine, moral teaching, ethics, saints, social issues, and commentary on the state of the Church and the world.... In the midst of a deteriorating moral, social, and economic climate it is more important than ever "to confirm the brethren". One of the most dangerous and self-destructive realities of our times is "political correctness". I think it is more than fair to say that in this short collection of Fr. John Corapi's letters you would have a hard time finding any political correctness." (from the back cover). Many of you are familiar with him and would find in it some brief, concise answers and observation on topics important in our country currently. Lending Library hours are Sundays from 10 am to 2 pm, and Fridays from 9:15 am to Noon, in the National Shrine Conference Center, Room C (across the alley from the Northwood parking lot). 10 Page 10 Shrine Herald National Shrine of the Little Flower Shrine Catholic Grade School Open House Thursday, February 4 7 pm Grade School Happenings Grade 5 Our focus this month will be on Vocations. We will be learning about the lives of priests, nuns, the married life, and the single life as we work on a vocation essay for a contest in our own parish. Most of all, we will pray for vocations and for the people in the religious life for the strength to carry on their calling. We will also adopt a seminarian and build a spiritual bouquet to send to him in February (a spiritual bouquet is a gift of prayers and sacrifices gathered and offered for someone special). The fifth grade also sponsored a cupcake sale last week to collect money to assist with schooling for our seminarians by donating what we collected to the Fisherman s Fund. As we settled back into our school routine after the Christmas break, we began our Biography Book Project. Each student is reading about a hero in history. Upon completion of the book, the classes will go to the library and the computer lab to research important facts and quotes about the individual they are researching. From there the fifth graders will make a poster, find an appropriate costume (to dress like their hero), and work on a speech. With shoulders back and heads held high, each student will become the hero they learned about before our parents and grandparents at a culminating activity in February. Grade 5 science classes have just completed a study of atoms, elements, and the Periodic Table of Elements. Each student selected an element to research and built a model atom of that element. Next, they will use information on the elements to write original first person riddles. In math class, we are analyzing data using graphs of various kinds, including bar, line, Venn diagrams and histograms. We re also working on division by one- and two-digit divisors. The champion essayists of the fifth grade have completed their entries for the Daughters of the American Revolution-Piety Hill division essay contest. This year, Asher Smith was the winner and Asher, his parents and Mrs. Gilmour attended a tea to honor Asher as the contest winter. Fifth grade has been tracking the routes of the Portugese explorers as they sought a sea route to Asia. We also followed Columbus on his journey westward, where he sought a route to Asia, but found the Americas instead. One of our cross-curricular activities was writing a compare/contract paragraph about the Native American groups of North America. We have also been working hard to spell plural and possessives correctly, carefully placing apostrophes where they are needed. It has been a very busy month so far! Mrs. Gilmour Mrs. McPherson Academy Update By Mark Jagodzinski Mrs. Popp This Month, some seventh and eighth graders will be designing future cities. A class this year, moderated by Mr. Tim Dobrzeniecki, is a class where the students plan, engineer, and build a model of a future city. Some ideas around the city plans include environmental, economical, and practical design. The class doesn t include just building a model city, however. It includes various films and projects which try and teach the students how many people around the world are working on building better buildings and cities today Michael Cobbledick, an eighth grader in the class, said Future cities class has showed me the harsh realities of pollution in our world, and how we should all go green. It s also a lot of fun! At the end of January, the class will take a field trip to a Future Cities competition, where they will enter their model city, perform a skit, and enter an essay. They will be competing against other middle schools participating in the area. They are all hoping to win the top prize and all their hard work has paid off. 15 January 17, 2010 Page 15 Knights of Columbus Faithful Parishioners, I write to you today, in sincere hope that all of you were able to experience a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, filled with joy, spirituality and happiness. Now that we are all back from vacation (physically, if not mentally,) I would like to take this opportunity, if I may, to tell all of you about some of the most important upcoming dates in the calendar of Council First and foremost, this weekend January 16 and 17 we will be hosting a Blitz Drive in hopes of obtaining new membership in our council. There will be a staffed table set up in Heritage Hall after all weekend masses. If you have any questions about the Knights of Columbus or are yourself an inactive member, please do not hesitate to stop by and ask one of our current members. We are always glad to talk about our Council and our Order. Remember all Catholic Men over the age of 18 are welcome to join our ranks, we would love to have you. Secondly, if you are fortunate enough to have attended the 9 am Mass this Sunday, you saw our color corps present as well as many other Brother and Sir Knights, as we were having a Corporate Communion. This usually happens four times a year and is a great way for all our past and present members of the council to get together and celebrate the Eucharist, which gives us so much in our lives. Please consider joining us for our next Corporate Communion, any time the color corps are present during mass, you know that you are going to be in for a special treat. Third, on January 23 we will be hosting a Free Throw Contest at Shrine Catholic High School, more details on this event will follow. Finally on January 25 at 7 pm Council will be teaming up with Council 4188 of Clawson to host a Fraternal Benefits Night. This is an annual event open to all Knights and their families, wherein which the benefits that you receive for being a member of our Order are discussed. These benefits include a wonderfully comprehensive life insurance purchase option as well as many other benefits, too long to list here. Please consider joining us for this annual and informative event. As always please remember to join us for our bi-weekly meetings, which are held: 7:30 pm, 2nd Tuesday monthly Officers Meeting, National Shrine Conference Center 7:30 pm, 4th Tuesday monthly Council General Membership Meeting, National Shrine Conference Center Reminder: A Current Membership Card is required to enter the meetings. Please also remember to remit your annual dues to our Financial Secretary as soon as possible: Annual dues in the council are $30 for which members receive the council newsletter, the Michigan Columbian state publication and Columbia Magazine. In addition, members have the option of supporting the Fr. McGivney Chair for Life Ethics at Sacred Heart Seminary, Boysville, and the Take 5 program which funds Catholic Advertising and a host of other charitable programs through the Michigan State Council. A one time initiation fee of $10 will be billed to each new member when he completes the First Degree, and a member who has been reactivated will be billed $7.50 for processing. There are four Degrees in the Knights of Columbus. After the initiation, the Second and Third Degrees elevate members to full Knighthood. The Fourth degree is the Patriotic Degree of the Order For further information about joining the Knights, call Membership Director Sean McCarthy or kofc12408membership@gmail.com or Grand Knight Tadd Klimmek at For your insurance needs please contact our Field Agent Kevin Murphy kevin.murphy@kofc.org or May the Blessings of Almighty God be Upon Each of You Vivat Jesus Matthew R.
