3 Mass intentions: Purgatory and prayers for the dead! For any Catholic, praying for the dead might seem like a very normal thing to do. The very thought of it sits very well within the bounds of our Catholic culture. But like with some things in our faith we might not always understand it. To put it simply, when we die in the state of grace, namely, being without mortal sin on our soul, we will go to purgatory or heaven. Unless we are a perfect saint when we die it s likely we will experience some sort of purification or purgatory. Contrary to what many believe purgatory is not a form of God s punishment, it is a necessary purification so that we may enter the presence of God. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. (1030) Purgatory is actually a great act of God s mercy. Without it we would not be able to enter heaven. One way to think about it would be to imagine that your life on Earth is like being stuck inside your dark house for days with the lights off and shades drawn. Then purgatory would be like opening the door and walking out into the sun light, which represents God. It would be very painful at first while our eyes got used to the brilliance of the sun. It s not the sun s fault, it s the just fact that our eyes have gotten used to living in the dark. Praying for the Dead Yes, our prayers and sacrifices can assist those who are in purgatory. Our sacrifice can take the place of a soul s sacrifice in purgatory. You won t find the word purgatory in the Bible but there are many instances where a purification after death and a praying for the dead is mentioned. The book of Job states the following: Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them. (Job 1:5) Many times the best way to do this is to have a Mass said for a particular person who has passed away. The Church considers the Mass as the greatest possible prayer of intercession insofar as it is the perfect offering of Christ to the Father by making present the paschal mystery of His death and resurrection. We certainly have much love for our family and friends that have gone before us. Let us continue to pray for them. So, if you would like to have a Mass said for particular friend or family member that has passed, please let us know by calling the office for further info. The Dubois County Community Foundation has give the town of Ireland a grant to partner with Taylor Siefker Williams Design Group, a city planning firm, to help create a long term community plan in honor of Ireland s Bicentennial coming in Stop by sometime during the St. Mary Picnic to share your thoughts, ideas, and concerns with Ireland now and for the future. Sponsor Couples - We are looking for couples who would be willing to talk to engaged couples about life as a married couple. We currently have some couples within our parish who have already volunteered but are looking for more couples to step up and help us out. You do not meet with them every week or even every month and you will have a book to help with your sessions. Please consider volunteering for this ministry - there are a lot of weddings on the books for 2015 & 2016 so lots of help is needed. Call the parish office for more info. To all the cooks, fryers and servers, thank you for all the wonderful food and friendly faces. To the volunteers who helped in the stands, whether it was putting them up, taking them down or working in them on picnic day Thanks!! To all who donated to the raffles, surprise bags and supplies for the Country Store, it was greatly appreciated. To all our youth that helped out and to the adults who took care of the kids activities, we cannot say enough about the time and the care you took to make sure the kids had a great time. You could see by their smiles that they enjoyed the day. But most of all, thanks to all the volunteers that helped that day and all the days leading up to picnic day. As a Catechist you not only help our youth grow in their faith, you too will grow in yours.
