3 Indulgences- A few terms associated with the Divine Mercy Sunday celebrations brought up more questions about our faith and its traditions. One of them is an Indulgence. Some have asked what it is and do we still believe in indulgences. First of all, yes, we, the Roman Catholic Church, do believe in indulgences and continue the practice of receiving them; however, it is often a misunderstood practice. In the Rite of Penance (the Sacrament of Reconciliation), the guilt for our sins is taken away, but the temporal punishment due to our sins still remains. This punishment may be remitted through indulgences. Through special prayer offerings and a sincere act to change our lives we are purifying ourselves from the sins we have committed. The faithful receive an indulgence through the ministry of the Church, which was given the authority from Christ. Those who receive an indulgence must have an appropriate disposition and fulfill certain requirements. A plenary indulgence remits, whereas a partial indulgence removes only a part of it. Indulgences can be obtained for oneself or for the souls who are in Purgatory. A Plenary indulgence can be received only once a day. Three requirements are necessary. They include: receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receiving the Eucharist and offering a prayer for the intentions of the Pope. The purpose of indulgences is the actions of the faithful, indulgences encourage the faithful to incorporate a truly Christian character within actions they perform on a regular basis. The goal is to move away from sin and to seek the grace of God. When we do this, it is always a good thing. In the example given to us by St. Paul, let s turn from our past, receive the call from Christ and begin anew starting with the gift of the Pauline Year Indulgence offered to us by the Church. Fr. Gary Poverty at the Crossroads Indiana Bishop s Pastoral Letter on Poverty Questions for Reflection On February 18, 2015, the five Bishops of Indiana promulgated a pastoral letter entitled, Poverty at the Crossroads. This document asks all Catholics and people of Goodwill to See, Judge and Act as our faith calls us to respond. The Bishops are requesting that we take time during the Lenten and Easter Seasons to read and reflect on the message in the letter. The questions below are taken from the pastoral Letter. Have you been surprised to discover relatives, friends or neighbors in distress as a result of changes in our state s economy over the last five to ten years? 2. Where do you see the reality of poverty in Indiana? 3. How is your parish, school and diocese now responding to the poor in its midst? 4. Do you agree that the Church has a responsibility to speak on behalf of the poor? 5. Is there an issue that is more important for the Church s consideration than the four mentioned in this Letter (Family Life, Employment, Education, and Health Care)? 6. How does my community (parish, school, institution) directly serve the needs of the poor? 7. How could my community unite with others in a strategy to alleviate the most fundamental causes of poverty in Indiana? Provided by Catholic Charities Diocese of Evansville. We will depart after our 7:30am Mass and enjoy coffee and donuts as we travel to our first stop the Blackerby s 5 Hangar Restaurant. St. Mary Preschool We had lots of fun learning about the letter Ww this week! Year 1 students tried out some different painting tools. We made some of the wackiest paintings ever! Using scrapers, sponges, and rollers with different designs helped our students to be very creative. Year 2 students made a worm craft out of beads. We knew just how they should look since we ve been seeing so many real worms outside! All of our classes also enjoyed playing in the water table. It really made us want summer to come, but we sure are enjoying the spring weather now! Ms. Lauren Catechist Corner Learn what happens after Christ died for us. Be Inspired by what the disciples did in his absence. Become amazed how our Catholic faith began. Watch A.D. - The Bible Continues - a mini series - Sunday evenings on NBC - 9:00pm. to 10:00pm. The Bible. The 12-part A.D. tells the story of what happened to Christ s disciples after the crucifixion, as detailed I the first 10 chapters of the New Testament s Books of Acts. Martha Rogation Day - Sacred Heart Church, Schnellville and the Diocesan Office of Catholic Rural Life will offer the annual Rogation Service to pray for favorable weather, protection from natural disaster, safety in the fields and on the roads, and for a fruitful harvest. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of seed and soil to be blessed at the end of Mass. This service is for all who eat and care for the earth. We are adding a BBQ Pulled Pork option this year, so come enjoy either main dish with the traditional German Potatoes, coleslaw and bread. Food service will be drive-thru only. The cost of each meal is $8. Wednesdays the Bosco House is open after school until 5:00pm for dropping in (high school). Join us Wednesday nights for Bible Storying at the Bosco House after Religious Ed from 8:30-9:30pm each week (high school). Come check out this imaginative way of reflecting on Scripture. An Apologetics Class is being offered for high school students. The Bradfords will be leading this class at the Bosco House on Wednesdays in April from 6:30-7:30pm. Want to be able to articulate you Catholic faith better. Come check it out. Spots for Work Camp, One Bread One Cup and NCYC are still open. Reserving your spot for any of these trips requires a $100 deposit made out to St. John Bosco. Don t let cost keep you from registering for a trip. The league is open to men of the parish who are 16 years or older or any Ireland K of C member. If you were on a team roster last year, your team captain will contact you to see if you want to play this year. Anyone else that would like to join should contact Fred Boehm at Those wishing to play on the softball field must have their own personal insurance coverage. If an injury occurs, the Diocese of Evansville and St. Mary Church will not be liable for medical costs. A waiver must be signed by everyone participating in our softball league, especially those under the age of 18. Canvas & Conversation Mark your calendar for April 16 as we have our First Canvas & Conversation. Limited to the first 40 adults, men and women, who sign up. Participants will be walking to reflect, honor, and remember a love one that has passed away. Groups are encouraged. Following the walk, a full breakfast and lots of fellowship will take place in the Community Center Cafeteria. The entry fee is $20 which includes a t-shirt and full breakfast. Kids 6 and under are free (no shirt provided). Must register by April 24 to guarantee a t- shirt. Registration forms can be found in the back of church. All proceeds will go to the Ireland K of C Teddy Bear Project.
