Sacrament of Baptism: The joy of having children is fully realized in their baptism within the faith community. Call the Parish Office regarding Baptism appointments. First time parents, please stop by and pick up a baptism video. Sacrament of Marriage: Parishioners who wish to be married at St. Mary Church are asked to contact the parish office six months prior to setting a date. This will provide time for prayer, preparation and paperwork. Homebound Parishioners: Communion calls are made on Monday mornings to parishioners homes. Call the parish office if you would like a visit from our Eucharistic Minister. 3 Finally the sun is out, the flowers are blooming, the grass is growing and we all enjoy being outside in God s creation. During this season many games will be played. I am all for our young people playing sports or getting involved in extra curricular activities. God gave us magnificent bodies that need exercise and it is good for our spirit to have healthy competition. Over the years, I have attended many of my nephews and niece s ballgames. I realize the extra challenge of commitment that playing on these teams can create. Not only do we have local but also traveling teams. Both my nephew, Cody, and my niece, Brianne, played on traveling Soccer teams. I often heard how the games went. I didn t have to ask they always told me, We went to Church, Uncle Gary. Recently a parent shared with me that her children are on a traveling team. She makes certain no matter where they are, they go to Mass; it is an expectation. Hearing this warmed my heart. I am proud of this Mom. This parent is teaching more about sports, discipline and our faith than the average. What some parents don t realize is, the example of allowing their kids to skip Mass introduces exceptions. Once this done, it changes the young person. They also expect exceptions in sports, school, relationships and work. A great lesson we can teach our young people is commitment. The fact is this: when Moses came down from Mount Sinai, he shared Ten Commandments the Lord gave to all of us. The Third Commandment is: Keep holy the Lord s Day. This means we should give the Lord His time. It is our obligation as Catholics to attend Mass on the weekend. If not, it is a mortal sin. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: ( ) On Sundays and Hoy Days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass. The Precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the eve of the preceding day. The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to unless excused for a serious reason (for example illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. As your pastor I am concerned for the salvation of your souls. I can not turn my head and say oh well it is summer. I must remind you this, it is who we are, this is what we teach and this is the expectation. I realize things do happen out of your control and for that we have the blessing of the sacrament of reconciliation. Is it easy to follow these rules no but to whom much is given much is expected. All are welcome to attend the games. The Ireland K of C will have concessions available. The tourney starts at 2:00pm Saturday. The final game is scheduled for 4:00pm Sunday. Pairings for the first round are: Saturday 2:00pm 3:00pm 4:00pm Dodgers - Cardinals Orioles - Reds Mets - Giants The Cubs drew the bye and play at 6:00pm on Saturday Irish Sweepstake Winner for July 12 Congratulations to our $ winner, Betty Edwards. Thanks to all who have donated plastic caps. We have a bench and picnic table. If you would like to make a donation to help with the costs of these items, please drop it in the collection basket or bring by the parish office. 4 This Week s Parish Events Sunday [07/19]: Second Collection for the Community Meal Program and Food Bank. St. Mary Parish will be cooking and serving the Community Meal on Saturday, August 1. Volunteers are always appreciated. Call Stan Epple at if you can help. Children s Liturgy of the Word for grades 1 and 2 during the 9:15am Mass. Monday [07/20]: No Mass will be celebrated. Servants of the Holy Spirit at 7:00pm in the Library. Tuesday [07/21]: Communion & Liberation at 6:30pm. Wednesday [07/22]: Rosary at 11:30am in the church. All are welcome. Quilting noon to 4:00pm in the rectory basement. Mass will be celebrated at 6:00pm. St Anne s Sewing Room open 6:00pm in the rectory. Thursday [07/23]: Mass will be celebrated at 7:30am. St Vincent de Paul Meeting at 6:30pm in the Library. Friday [07/24]: No Mass will be celebrated. The Ireland K of C will be hosting a Night for Knights and Ladies at Freddy Hopf s Park. Any questions or for directions contact John Wilz at Saturday, Sunday & Monday [07/25, 26 & 27]: TEC (Teens Encounter Christ) is a three day experience for young people who are searching for goals, acceptance, meaning and for community. Applications can be found in the back of church. Sponsor Couples - We are looking for couples who would be willing to talk to engaged couples about life as a married couple. We currently have some couples within our parish who have already volunteered but are looking for more couples to step up and help us out. You do not meet with them every week or even every month and you will have a book to help with your sessions. Please consider volunteering for this ministry - there are a lot of weddings on the books for 2015 & 2016 so lots of help is needed. Call the parish office for more information. The Brute Society Induction Ceremony will be held at Saint Benedict Cathedral on November 1 at 2:30pm EST. Because of the size of our parish, we can submit 3 individuals/couples for this award. Nominees for this award must be good stewards of their time and talent for St. Mary. If you know of someone who is not necessarily active now but several years ago played an important part in our parish, please feel free to nominate them. Send a letter or of the individual/couple you would like to nominate and why to Father Gary by August 18. Upcoming Parish Events July 25, 26 & 27: TEC August 1: St. Mary Parish will cook and serve the Community Meal. Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated. September 13: St. Mary Church Picnic October 1: St. Anne Meeting Bosco Sign up for NCYC! Reserving your spot for the National Catholic Youth Conference requires a $100 deposit made out to St. John Bosco. This event will be in Indianapolis, November Don t let cost keep you from registering. Call Carley if you are interested but unable to make the deposit. For more info on trips or events, contact Carley Knapp at or cknapp@evdio.org. Our adult bible study CRAVE will resume on Monday, August 10, 6:30-8:00pm, in the parish rectory. This will be a short 3 week study based on an interview between a Catholic priest and a protestant minister called Common Ground. This is a great little study to help us understand the similarities and the differences in our beliefs. You will be intrigued by their open discussion about: Salvation - Holy Eucharist - The Virgin Mary - Confession - The Saints - Prayer and Worship - and much more. This is a great way to better understand our faith, our actions and our beliefs. This study is open to everyone and there is not cost. Please sign up in the back of church if interested. September 13 Picnic Information Letters were sent out to last year s picnic donors. We are always looking for additional donors to be added to the Grand Raffle ticket. If you would like to be included on the ticket, call the parish office for more details or to make a donation. We need your support. If you are not currently on a quilt group, please consider donating $35 and having your name added to a group. If you are on a group, make sure your donation is made either to the parish office or the person in charge of your group. That is all you have to do. The more quilts we have, the longer the crowd stays. Please donate if you can. Never to early to be thinking about your Theme Basket. We have had some great ideas in the past and look forward to what might be donated this year. Call the parish office for some past ideas if you need help getting something together. Surprise Bag Booth: 700 items $.10 to $10. New or like-new items (books, games, bubbles, jump ropes, etc). If your time is limited you may donate to the Surprise Booth and we will do the shopping for you. Items may be dropped off at the parish office or placed in the container in the church vestibule. Have extra blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, etc and not know what to do with them? All profits go to the upcoming bicentennial celebration to be held on August 26-28, August 15: Pork and Potato Dinner Sale at 6:30pm.
