In the past few weeks, I am sure you have noticed that Jesus is back on the cross. Insurance paid most of the cost of replacing Jesus, but with our insurance deductible and other expenses, St. Mary Parish had to come up with the difference. If this is a project you would like to make a donation towards, just drop your donation at the parish office or in the collection basket and let me know you want it to go toward the crucifix expenses. 3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Throughout the Mass several gestures are used as part of our worship. One gesture that I have heard so many people ask me about is genuflecting. A telltale sign of a Catholic is genuflection, which is touching the right knee to the floor while bending the left knee. The sign of the cross is made simultaneously. Catholics only genuflect in front of the Holy Eucharist, the real presence of Christ. The Holy Eucharist is kept in the tabernacle or in a monstrance during adoration. An indication that the Holy Eucharist is in the tabernacle is the Sanctuary Candle, usually a red candle or a candle in a red globe. When Christ is present in the Holy Eucharist, the Sanctuary Candle is lit. That leads to the question, What happens when the Holy Eucharist is not in the main body of the Church? When the tabernacle is not in the main body of the Church, Catholics are to bow toward the Altar of Sacrifice, the Altar upon which the Holy Eucharist is consecrated. At St. Mary s it is obvious that Jesus is front and center and should be the center of our lives. There should be no confusion of what gesture we should make. We should genuflect. When speaking about genuflecting I think of two people, my Grandpa Kaiser, and Msgr. Kaiser. Both men in their mid nineties would touch their knee to the floor. Grandpa had a hip replacement and was filed with arthritis. It never stopped him to honor his Lord and savior. These men made an impression upon me and many others. When arriving at the three parishes of my first assignment one parishioner mentioned to me how impressionable it was to see that Msgr. Kaiser would touch his knee to the floor. Genuflection is showing respect to our Lord. Some people are unable to genuflect because of health reasons. In such a case, one should bow to the tabernacle. However, I have been noticing several people who appear to be in good health yet not genuflecting. I would encourage all of you to be intentional about each of your gestures in Mass, be it genuflection, making the sign of the cross, standing, kneeling or bowing. Fr. Gary Catechist Corner Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto me. This week, several of the middle school and high school kids helped in the process of making sleeping matts for the homeless. These matts are made out of recycled Wal-Mart bags. The kids cut and threaded the bags together to make a ball of plastic yarn. We will take the balls of plastic yarn to a lady in Jasper and she will crochet the plastic yarn into 6 long sleeping matts for the homeless. These plastic matts are used as a barrier between the blanket and the ground to help the homeless stay dry and warm. This is a very simple project anyone can do in their home if they have spare time. If you would like to learn how to make the ball of plastic yarn, contact me and I would be glad to show you. God Bless Martha St. Mary Preschool - Chalk Box Happy St. Patrick s Day, everyone! We certainly had an adventure this week as we celebrated St. Patrick s Day!!! Have you seen a tiny little man dressed in green, wearing a gold shoe (strangely, a rather LARGE shoe), and running as quickly as can be? Well, if you have, please let us know! We have been on the lookout for a leprechaun named Liam. He seems to visit our classes each year, giving us clues, tricks, and goodies. However, we just can t seem to catch him! We can tell you from firsthand experience that those leprechauns sure are tricky but they certainly are fun to try to find! Good luck to you this weekend if you are on the lookout for one! ~Ms. Holly Help Us Get Ready for September 8, 2013 Picnic Sunday Before long, it will be picnic time and we all know our homemade quilts are a big reason that people come and stay on picnic day. We are lucky enough to have dedicated volunteers who quilt on Mondays and Wednesdays and also in their homes. Would you be willing to get 11 family members, neighbors or friends together to donate $30 a piece to buy material and have a quilt quilted for our picnic? All of your names will be attached to the finished quilt and displayed at the quilt show and picnic day. Call Sherri or Dianne at the parish office, , for more information. If you are currently on a quilt group, please send your donation in at any time. Be sure and mark it quilt donation. CHECK OUT THE NEW AND IMPROVED WEBSITE. If you have not looked at our website in a while, be sure and check it out at Kelby Uebelhor will be completing an Eagle Scout Project with St. Mary s Preschool this summer. Part of the project is creating a library for the preschool. CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING In his 2011 Lenten Message, Pope Benedict XVI focuses on the Sacrament of Baptism. He notes: By immersing ourselves into the death and resurrection of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are moved to free our hearts every day from the burden of material things, from a self-centered relationship with the world that impoverishes us and prevents us from being available and open to God and our neighbor. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. REFLECTION The Collect on this solemn day of the liturgical year has been in use for the Sunday before Easter dating back at least to the eighth century and the Gelasian Sacramentary. Thus, it has been in use for at least 1200 years in the celebration of the Eucharist. In the proclamation of the Passion of our Lord, we encounter the suffering that Christ endured for our sake. By this collect, we pray that in our patient suffering we are joined even closer to our Lord in a special way. And more so, through this suffering, we may share in the glory of the Resurrection when all pain will be wiped away. Whether our pain and suffering is temporary, chronic, or even debilitating, we are graced with the chance to share in a part of the life of Jesus that many take every chance to avoid. However, should we not embrace life in all stages so as to be able to rejoice in the next life where pain and suffering will be wiped away? PRAYER Holy Spirit, help me to reach out to those who are no longer able to be present at the Eucharistic table because of illness or old age. Allow me to carry their burden even if only for a time when I visit them, pray for them, and care for their needs. And, if I suffer, may I be patient and willing to carry this grace with which I have been gifted, and look forward to sharing resurrected life at the end times. Submitted by: Fr.
