3 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On June 17th, Bishop Thompson came to Holy Family to speak about the Linking of the Four Parishes of Holy Family, Precious Blood, St. Joe and St. Mary. The presentation of statistics was similar to that presented a year ago last Spring. Bishop Charles spoke openly to the audience. First he stated, that of the roughly 190 Dioceses across the Untied States, almost all of them are going through a process of Strategic Planning. Several of those Dioceses have gone through the process once or twice before. Surprisingly, we have never gone through a process like this before. Since our Diocese was created in 1945 no realignment has taken place. Like any organization we must continually revaluate how we are doing things and ask ourselves can we do things better/more efficiently. We must be good stewards of the blessings God has given to the People of God. The Bishop stated, our objective is to look how best to use the resources of our Diocese for the ministry of the people. He also reminded us that our goal should always be for the salvation of souls. Two major things have happened to urge us in addressing the issue of our resources. First, the population growth and shift across our Diocese. In some areas the population has decreased in large numbers. Some areas have remained flat, while our area has grown. We must look at where the people are and address their needs with the resources available. The second factor is the change in number of vocations. Bishop Charles explained that research conducted on vocations, indicated that across the United States; we are not experiencing a shortage of Priests. Rather we are coming out of an era that had the largest surplus of priests (and religious brothers and sisters.) After World War II our country saw a huge increase of vocations. That prompted the leaders in the Church to expand at a rapid rate Across America. This created an infrastructure we are trying to deal with and staff. Bishop Thompson shared a story of one Bishop having so many priests that the newly ordained were assigned to serve as bus drivers to the schools when my great Uncle was ordained for the Diocese of Indianapolis, which at that time included our area; the Bishop only assigned one priest to the Diocese. He had that many extra priests. My great Uncle was sent to Corpus Christi, Texas to help out in the mission area there. That is similar to what Fr. Pascal s Bishop has done with him and other priests. This is a good thing; the universal Church helps areas that need it. However we can not rely on extern priest or our retired priests. They help our needs but are not the solution. The number of vocations is actually returning to average historical numbers. If one looks at the history of the Church over the past 2,000 years, the number we have today is not as alarming as one might suspect. However our situation is serious. When planning for the Strategic Planning process the Diocese estimated that from the 45 active priests serving our 69 parishes we would have only 36 active priests in three years. Since December of 2013 we have lost 13 priests from active ministry. That is almost one third of the priests in our diocese leaving active ministry due to retirement, health issues etc. Facing this reality the Bishop challenged us to look again at how we can best use our resources. He posed the question, is linking enough? Our two parishes are already linked. We share work in our Youth Ministry and Religious Education with the four area parishes. Our two parishes have been working together in the area of Spiritual Life and Worship for the past several months. I challenge us to plan between our two parishes on how we can best use our resources including time, talent and treasure. I propose in the Fall both Parish Councils convene to discuss this issue and make plans to address our future. The overall response from people was supportive. The majority was in agreement we can no longer think of my parish but rather our Catholic Community. Many asked why it has taken so long. Honestly, this takes time and involves a lot, including people and their emotions. It is also our first time in doing this, so we must be patient. Others expressed, lets move into action. I ask all families to pray asking the Holy Spirit to guide as we try to serve the people of God while being good stewards of the blessings entrusted to all of us. Primary responsibilities include coordinating a Computer Lab and classroom technology equipment, ISTEP and Star testing and troubleshooting technology with classroom teachers. Some classroom instruction in conjunction with classroom teachers is involved. Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent capability with and passion for technology, enjoy working with students and staff, and work to enhance each student s educational experience. Prayer for Independence Day Dear God, As we celebrate today with fireworks and festivals, help us never to forget the reason for our joy. Help us remember that our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were signed into our heritage with the willing blood of American patriots. Most of all, help us remember that the rights of all people are more than words on a document, and that all people have rights because you have given us the dignity of human life.
