3 Bring out the ashes!! In both the Old and New Testaments ashes are associated with mourning and repentance. As Catholics we begin the Lenten season with Ash Wednesday. Following the proclamation of the Gospel and a homily is given the priest blesses the ashes with Holy Water and offers a prayer. The congregation comes forward similar to communion time and receives ashes upon their forehead. Like a splash of cold water on the face that awakens a person in the morning, ashes on the forehead are to awaken the recipient to the beginning of a new season in the Church s liturgical year. The ashes are made from the palms that were used in the previous year s Palm Sunday celebration. We are called to examine our lives and prepare for a new Easter. When ashes are administered two formulas can be used: Repent and believe in the Gospel, or Remember, you are dust, and to dust you will return. This is to remind us that with the fact that now is the time to act, now is the time to get things right with God. This year, Ash Wednesday will be on March 5th get your foreheads ready and begin to examine your life. This day is a day of fasting. We should curb our meals to one regular meal and two smaller meals. There should be no eating between meals and we should not eat meat on this day or on Fridays. This practice reminds us of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. It also helps us remain yes in control of our desires. Fasting helps us with our free will and builds upon our inner strength. This Lent all of you will be within my prayers as you journey in faith. May this Lenten Season be one that draws you closer to God and His Heavenly Kingdom. This year Mass times are 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at St. Mary and 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. at Precious Blood. Fr. Pascal and I look forward to seeing you there. Fr. Gary Catechist Corner The Sacrament of Reconciliation: This week the 3rd grade class reviewed the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we do not live the way Jesus wants us to live and freely choose to do what is wrong, we sin. Sin causes us to hurt our friendship with God and others, but God is always willing to forgive us and restore our relationship through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. When we examine our conscience, we are making ourselves accountable for what we have done in our lives. When we can admit that we have made bad choices and ask for forgiveness, we grow closer to God. Just as a priest through the power of the Holy Spirit is given the Apostolic succession to turn bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, He is also taking the place of Christ in the Confessional to give us absolution from our sins. As Lent is right around the corner, let us all find the time to seek out a time to take advantage of this great Sacrament. It not only brings us closer to God, but gives us the extra graces to live out our faith. Martha St. Mary Preschool On Saturday, April 12 from 10-1, St. Mary Preschool will hold our annual fundraiser. This year s fundraiser is Paint Your Own Pottery. This is a Day of Fast (Catholics 18 to 59 years of age) and Abstinence (Catholics 14 years of age and up are obliged to abstain from meat - also Fridays during Lent) Extraordinary Ministers, Lectors, Servers and Ushers are needed for both Masses. March 14-16: Source and Summit Retreat in Evansville. This is an excellent retreat centered on the Eucharist with some of the best Catholic speakers in the country. The early deadline has passed, but you can still sign up by getting the registration forms from Carley or your DRE. Cost is $55. March 21: Icemen Hockey Game in Evansville. Meet at the Bosco House at 6:30pm. March 25: Day trip to St. Meinrad Archabbey. Meet at the Bosco House at 10:00am. June 1-6: Catholic Heart Work Camp in Atlanta.
