Sacrament of Baptism: The joy of having children is fully realized in their baptism within the faith community. Call the Parish Office regarding Baptism appointments. First time parents, please stop by and pick up a baptism video. Sacrament of Marriage: Parishioners who wish to be married at St. Mary Church are asked to contact the parish office six months prior to setting a date. This will provide time for prayer, preparation and paperwork. Homebound Parishioners: Communion calls are made on Monday mornings to parishioners homes. Call the parish office if you would like a visit from our Eucharistic Minister. Diocesan Policy: Report and Inform The Diocese of Evansville has in place a policy that requires that any allegation of child abuse must be reported to civil authorities. If an allegation involves the sexual abuse of a minor by diocesan personnel, the Victims Assistance Coordinator must also be informed. Sexual misconduct violates human dignity and the mission of the church. The spiritual well-being of all victims, their families, and others in the community is of particular concern to the church. 3 Now that the Lenten season has begun it is a good time to reflect how we integrate our faith into our lives and what we do during this time. Lent lasts for 40 days beginning on Ash Wednesday and concludes at sundown on Holy Thursday. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Spring equinox. The school children often ask why the priests and deacons wear a particular color of vestments. The Liturgical color of Lent is purple. It is the color of Royalty, which symbolizes the suffering Jesus and anticipates the glory of resurrection. Jesus was a different type of leader a servant leader, who suffered for our salvation. Other things that change during Lent include the Gloria is not sung and the word Alleluia is omitted from the Mass. During this penitential time people offer sacrifices for sins, as prayers for intentions and to build up their spiritual life. When I was young, my family always gave up candy. Different people and families have different traditions for Lent. Some attend daily Mass as a family. Others pray the Rosary as a family. Several of our parish families attend the Stations of the Cross at Church or make them privately. I have heard of families taking time to read about the saints or about the Church together. Lent is a great time to look at your life and see what needs to change. Do you need to pray more? Are there good intentions that you could act upon? Are there sacrifices you should make? Do you need to spend more time with your family and/or God? In Christ, Fr. Gary St. Mary Preschool This week during our Bible stories we talked about Lent. We walked over to church to learn more about the Stations of the Cross. Back in the classroom, we made a big poster. To our students, it looked like a game board. It began with Ash Wednesday and will end on Easter Sunday. Each space has something we can do to better ourselves. It s filled with many good deeds, small sacrifices, and prayers that even preschool aged students can do! Each family received a copy of the Lenten calendar as well. As we travel through this journey with the children, we hope they will grow to love Jesus even more! Ms. Lauren Thank you from the HOOT Committee. Please save the date for the 2016 Holy Trinity HOOT on Saturday, January Irish Sweepstake Winner for February 15 Congratulations to our $ winner, Lisa Witte Friends and supporters of the Providence Home Grotto in Jasper are offering a special showing and silent auction of artwork by the late Father Thaddeus Sztuczko at the Dubois County Museum, on Newton Street in Jasper. A reception, with light refreshments, will be served from 7:00-8:30pm for the opening on Friday, February 25. The showing and silent auction continues until Sunday, March 15. The final bidding will be held at 3:00pm on the March 15. All proceeds of the silent auction support the ongoing care and preservation of the historic Mother of God Grotto. The museum is open from 10:00am-2:00pm Tuesday through Friday, 10:00am-4:00pm on Saturday and 1:00-4:00pm on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays. Contact Irene Kapp at for more information. Catechist Corner CRAVE - This study group will meet on Mondays, beginning February 23, at 6:30pm in the Rectory. Everyone high school age and up is welcome. We will be study Untold Blessing: Three Paths to Holiness by Fr. Robert Barron. Please think and pray about attending on Monday. The sessions will last about 90 minutes. We are happy to host Splendor of Truth Ministries founder Dr. Nicholas Lebish for a biblical, spiritual, and practical study of this threefold path to holiness on Friday, March 20, from 7:00-8:30pm at Precious Blood Church (Endress Hall). Double Edged Sword: St. Jerome famously said, Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. We are happy to host Dr. Nicholas Lebish to learn how to get more out of reading Scripture our doubled edged sword, (Heb 4:12)! We are asking you to submit your favorites - up to 5 - for this to be a success. You can do this by going online, information sheets are available in the back or church, or by dropping them off at the parish office. Deadline to submit recipes is Feb 28. Join us Wednesday nights for Bible Storying at the Bosco House after Religious Ed from 8:30-9:30pm each week (high school). Come check out this imaginative way of reflecting on Scripture. All high school students are invited to our annual Bosco Formal. This dinner and dance will be held at St. Joe Parish Center on Sunday, February 22 at 6:00pm. The theme is The Roaring 20 s. You can dress up for the theme or just dress up. Suggested donation $5 The Priority Deadline for Catholic Heart Work Camp Registration is Wednesday, February 25. Drop off your $100 deposit to Carley at the Bosco House to reserve your spot. The next Bosco Mixer is Friday, March 13, from 6:30-8:30pm. This time it will be at Precious Blood. We will meet in the church, then head to the gym. This is for all middle schoolers and is put on by the high schoolers. Come for games, snacks, music and to learn something new about your faith. Registration for One Bread One Cup and NCYC is open. Reserving your spot for any of these trips requires a $100 deposit made out to St. John Bosco.
