3 Dear Parishioners, The Gift of Hope We expect Jesus to be a savior who will take care of all our needs for comfort and security in this World. If it seems to us He is not answering our prayers for prosperity and protection we feel betrayed; we can become disillusioned. Jesus does promise security and life to the full as He defines these. He asks us to trust in His words, His promises, regardless of what we see and feel. Through every crisis that calls into question our trust in God, Jesus is inviting us to focus all our hopes and desires on the fullness of God s promises, to trust not in the visible signs that God is providing for us but simply in His promise to do so. This purifies our hope. We see this in the flight into Egypt. Mary and Joseph had the Savior of the World in their care, but they had to trust purely in God s word for protection when they were homeless refugees on the road to a foreign land. Jesus repeatedly challenges us, what are you looking for? What do you expect of Me as Savior? Do you trust Me no matter how vulnerable or abandoned you feel? Every experience of insecurity and doubt is a crisis that calls us to a deeper, more purified trust and hope as the Savior God really sent Jesus the suffering servant. Ask God to focus your hopes in union with Him alone. Ask God to teach you to trust the words Give us this day our Daily bread Matthew 6:32. When you are worried or a family member/friend experiences a crisis turn to Sacred Scripture and be comforted. A few favorite passages to read at that are: Proverbs 3:5-6, Jeremiah 17:7-8, Zechariah 4:6, Philippians 4:6-7, Philippians 4:19, 1 Peter 5:7. Receive the sacraments which God gave us to experience and encounter with Him through grace. He touches our lives to assure that He is there and always loves us!! Know you are loved by God. Father Gary Golden Jubilee Celebration - Bishop Charles C. Thompson invites couples married 50 years and longer to celebrate with a Mass of Jubilee and reception following. The Golden Jubilee is Sunday, October 6, at 1:00pm CDT at Good Shepherd Church, Evansville. St. Joseph is hosting Financial Peace University Dave Ramsey course for adults (college age and older) This is a nine week course beginning Monday, September 16 and ending Monday, November 11, 6:45 8:30pm, at St. Joseph Parish Center, room 303. Individuals or couples may sign up. Cost of the kit is $95. Call to register or for more info. Picnic News/Updates We are looking for someone to take over as Dining Room supervisor. We would really like someone to shadow Sherri and see what has to be done. Picnic Tickets can be picked up after Mass. Help us by taking family member tickets with you. **The grill raffle tickets do not have a price on them. They are $1 for one ticket and 6 for $5. Yard advertising signs are on the parish office porch. Time to start thinking about Theme Baskets for the picnic. We are hoping for some new and different ideas. Maybe a gift card basket from area merchants. Go together with co-workers and get lots of different cards. How about a: sports memorabilia basket? an entertainment basket? maybe a dinner party basket? sports game tickets? You can drop your donation off at the parish office. Surprise Bag Booth: Needed for our parish picnic 700 items 10 cents to $10. New or like new items. Place in marked container in church vestibule or bring to the parish office. For more info, call Pat Bohnenkamper or Mary Ann Robling We are looking for items for our Novelty Stand at picnic. If you are in the clearance or $1 aisle and see something a young kid would love to have, pick it up. Could be kid s tattoos, young girl s jewelry, bubbles, big candy bars, small toy trucks, etc. Just no squirt guns. Quilt Donations: Please send in your $30 donation to the parish office as soon as possible. Country Store: That time of the year when your berries/fruits are ripening. They are needed for the homemade items sold at the Country Store. Clean and put in gallon bags and we will freeze and store them at the parish office. Nuts, flour, sugar and new pie pans and small bread loaf pans are also needed. The Country Store does a lot of baking the Saturday before picnic and these homemade items are a big hit at picnic time. Help is needed on Saturday morning for baking and getting things ready for Sunday. If you are unable to work on Sunday (example Kimball summer picnic), please consider volunteering Saturday morning. We are still looking for volunteers to help picnic day. If you are not on the worker s list, please call the parish office and volunteer. High school young men, we could use your help. Children s Liturgy of the Word for grades 1 and 2 during the 9:00am Mass. *If you are interested in volunteering to become part of the Sunday School teacher rotation or to become a parent volunteer, please contact Amanda Vogler at Lesson plans are made up for you to follow. We would like to start Sunday School on September 15. Without volunteers, Sunday School will not take place. Monday [08/26]: Servants of the Holy Spirit at 7:00pm in the Library. Ireland K of C Meeting at 8:00pm. Tuesday [08/27]: Mass will be celebrated at 7:30am. Preschool Open House 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Wednesday [08/28]: Rosary at 11:30am in the Church. St. Anne s Sewing Room opens at 6:00pm in the Rectory Basement. **Wednesday evening religious education for Middle and High School students will start September 11. St. Mary Preschool Are you ready for s more learning? I sure am! The classroom is almost ready. The only thing missing is my students! Our Preschool Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, August 27 th from 5-7 p.m. Year One students are asked to come between 5:00-6:00 p.m. and Year Two students are asked to come between 6:00-7:00 p.m. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet the teachers, explore the classroom, and play with some new friends. We are going to have such an exciting year filled with many new experiences. A new teacher, new cubbies, and a new Preschool Library are some of the additions to our program this year. Engaged Encounter is a weekend retreat with other engaged couples that affords time alone together to plan for sacramental marriage. Trained facilitators lead the program. You are invited to help me give thanks, if not in person, then in spirit. We will start with the Eucharist at 11:00am at St. Joseph Church, Jasper, followed by a reception at the Parish Social Hall from 2:00pm-4:00pm. Please, no gifts, your presence and/or prayer will be most appreciated. TEC Picnic - The Teens Encounter Christ movement will be grilling out, playing Frisbee, volleyball, etc., September 1 at Ferdinand s 18 Street Park after 10:30am Mass at St. Ferdinand Parish. 4th day are welcome, and if you have them, please bring your children/spouses. The parish must proclaim the transcendent message of the gospel and help: ß bring "good news to the poor" in a society where millions lack the necessities of life; ß bring "liberty to captives" when so many are enslaved by poverty, addiction, ignorance, discrimination, violence, or disabling conditions; ß bring "new sight to the blind" in a culture where the excessive pursuit of power or pleasure can spiritually blind us to the dignity and rights of others; and ß "set the downtrodden free" in communities where crime, racism, family disintegration, and economic and moral forces leave people without real hope (cf.
