Sacrament of Baptism: Call the Parish Office regarding Baptism appointments. Anyone wishing to baptize their child must first attend a baptismal class offered by the parish. January 13: Ireland K of C will sponsor a free throw shooting contest Sunday, January 13, at the Ireland Elementary School gym. 3 Dear St. Mary and Precious Blood Parishioners, Beginning on January 13 th we will celebrate Vocations awareness week. Is Jesus asking you to help make His presence known in a world in desperate need of faith hope and love? Are you having thoughts of becoming a priest a religious sister or a religious brother? Nothing is more important and satisfying than understanding the will of God and living it. "The discernment of a vocation is above all the fruit of an intimate dialogue between the Lord and his disciples. Young people, if they know how to pray, can be trusted to know what to do with God's call." Pope Benedict XVI, A few questions to ask yourself: Are you a good leader? Do enjoy time in prayer? Do you want to help or serve others? Does the idea of becoming a brother, sister, or priest keep coming back to you? Answering yes to these questions may help confirm that you hear the call to discern your vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life. I invite you to take time to speak with me or Sr. Betty about vocations and to consider talking to a Vocation Director about these possibilities. The Church needs good women and men!! Prayer for vocations- God, Our Father, we thank you for calling men and women to serve in Your Son s Kingdom as priests, deacons religious and consecrated persons. Send your Holy Spirit to help us respond generously and courageously to your call. May our Community, of Faith, support vocations of sacrificial love in our youth. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen Father Gary Kaiser Catechist Corner Bible Verse of the Week: Luke 3:22 You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. These are the words that conclude today s Gospel. This is also my all time favorite Bible verse. I believe that 2 of the nicest phrases a child could hear from their parents are; I love you and I am proud of you. Better yet can you imagine hearing these words from God on judgment day? This is something we should all strive for, but not just on judgment day, everyday. We need to look for God s love and approval in all we do. Try to make that a challenge for you; at the end of the day as you examine your conscience, do you think that your actions for the day would be worth of these words? Our first FULL week back in 2013 began with number 1 and letter Mm. Mm is for monkey, mom, and mitten. We had a musical parade, practiced making M s, and experimented with magnets! The boys and girls each had the opportunity to share something special with us during Show & Tell. This is always a favorite at preschool! With Christmas just a few weeks ago, many of the items brought in for Show & Tell were gifts from Christmas. Some of the hot items included Pillow Pets, Dream Lites, Nintendo Ds s, Barbies, Angry Birds, and Skylanders to name a few! It was a perfect time to remind the boys and girls that when someone gives us a gift, it is their way of showing their love for us through Jesus! ~Ms. Holly Bulletin Info Regarding Registration The St. Mary Preschool teaching team invites you to register your child for the school year. Students eligible for the (Year One) 3-4 year olds class must be potty-trained and be 3 years old by Aug.1, Classes for the 3-4 year-olds will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-11:00 or 12-3:00. Students eligible for the (Year Two) 4-5 year-olds class must be 4 years old by Aug. 1, Class sessions for the 4-5 yearolds will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8-11:00 or from 12-3:00. St. Mary Preschool is offering an optional third day for Year Two students. This will be held on Friday mornings only. 4 This Week s Parish Events National Vocations Awareness Week...The goal of discernment is to follow what the Lord wills. Sunday [01/13]: Christian Mothers Prayers after all Masses this weekend. Everyone is welcome to stay after Mass and pray. Children s Liturgy of the Word for grades 1-3 during the 9:00am Mass. Sunday School in the Social Hall basement for ages 3-6 during the 9:00am Mass. Monday [01/14]: Quilting at 6:00pm in the Rectory basement. Rosary for the St. Mary Parish at 6:00pm in church. Servants of the Holy Spirit at 7:00pm in the Library. Ireland K of C Rosary at 7:00pm with Meeting and 20/20 at 8:00pm. Tuesday [01/15]: No Mass today - Father Gary is on vacation. Wednesday [01/16]: Rosary at 11:30am in church. Quilting 1:00pm-4:00pm in the Rectory basement. St. Anne s Sewing Room at 6:00pm in the Rectory Basement. Religious Education Classes at 6:00-7:00pm for middle school students and grades 1-5 (that do not attend Ireland Elementary) and 7:15-8:15pm for high school students. Baptism Class at 6:30pm in the Chapel. If you have not attended a class and this is your first child, you are encouraged to attend a Baptism Class. This will be the last class before the start of Lent. Thursday [01/17]: No Mass today - Father Gary is on vacation. Next Weekend [01/19 & 20]: Second Collection for the Community Food Bank. Volunteers are needed for Children s Liturgy of the Word at 9:00am Mass. You do not have to have children that go to the Liturgy of the Word to be a volunteer. Call Martha at , ext 45. December Parish Council minutes can be found in the back of church. There will be a Bible Study called The Mass and The Bible beginning Sunday, January 27 at 6:30pm. This study is part of the Journey through Scripture Bible study series. It explores what the Bible teaches us about the Mass and looks at the ultimate meaning of the Eucharistic sacrifice. Scripture Study will begin in February but we will have a special activity from 8:30-9:30pm following Religious Ed class. Jan 20 - Games Night for high school youth at the house beginning at 6:00pm. Jan 25 - Jr. Bosco night at Holy Family Parish form 6:30-8:30pm. All youth in grades 6-8 invited for prayer, games, snacks and activities. Maria Goretti is the patron saint for youth. Maria is an Italian virgin-martyr of the Roman Catholic Church, and is one of its youngest canonized saints. She died from multiple stab wounds inflicted by her attempted rapist after she refused to submit to him. As she lay in the hospital, she forgave her attacker before she died. Her death didn t end her forgiveness. Her attacker was captured and sentenced to 30 years in prison. He was unrepentant until he had a dream that he was in a garden. Maria was there and gave him flowers. When he woke, he was a changed man, repenting of his crime and living a reformed life. When he was released after 27 years, he went directly to Maria s mother to beg her forgiveness, which she gave to him. If my daughter can forgive him, who am I to withhold forgiveness, she said. Maria was canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1950 for her purity as a model for youth. Each year, the Evansville Diocese recognizes adolescents for their outstanding contribution to the life, mission and ministry provided to their family, parish, school and community. 2 high school Juniors or Seniors from each parish are presented with the Maria Goretti Award at St. Benedict Cathedral in Evansville. This is an honor that recognizes service, leadership and involvement as a Catholic in the world. If you know of a youth in our parish that you feel is deserving of this award please submit a short paragraph describing their involvement in his/her community, parish and faith life to the parish office by January 22. 4

My parents have been married for 49 years and I have a younger brother who is 39. I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana in 1991 with a degree in Elementary Education. Soon after, I accepted a position as Director of Youth Ministries at a large Presbyterian church in Bloomington, Illinois. After seven years I left my position with that church and I went to work for State Farm Insurance s headquarters as a College Recruiter. I moved back to Southern Indiana in 2001 and purchased a business with a long time friend. After the business closed in 2006, I worked as an Assistant Branch manager for a local bank, a General Manager of a local restaurant and, most recently, I was General Manager of Med-Star Billing Group - a medical billing company I opened for a business owner in Newburgh, Indiana. I was raised General Baptist and have worked for United Methodist and Presbyterian churches over the years, so my religious background is varied, but I was confirmed as a Catholic when I was 17 years old. I was about 40 years old when I first thought of becoming a priest, but my first recollection of being called to ministry was when I was 19. I am so happy to be at St. Meinrad and I am looking forward to ministering to parishioners in the Evansville Diocese. Jerry Pratt St Patrick Celebration Updates: The St. Patrick's Celebration Committee is in need of volunteers, please consider getting involved in your community. It takes a lot of manpower to put on the Celebration. We in particular need several volunteers to run the Duck Race on Saturday afternoon, March 16. If you are interested in helping with this or any other part of the Celebration, please contact one of the committee members. Our next meeting will be Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Ireland Historical Society Building. All are invited to attend. New ideas are always welcome.
