2 Intentional Discipleship: Our Parish. Our Identity. Our Mission. Pastor Fr. Tony Herold Emerg. Phone: (563) Deacon Deacon Robert McCoy (Ret.) Deacon Bob Shaw, Parish Secretary Michelle Fury, Director of Parish Life Michelle Herrington Finance Manager Rose Strickland Director of Pastoral Care Donna Enderle Directors of Evangelization & Mission Michael Havercamp Tasha Havercamp Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry Luke Ebener Director of Religious Education Jen Brooke Director of Music Dr. Jacob Bancks School Principal Julie Delaney, Parish Prayer Chain Elaine Lewandoski (563) Parish Website A Message from Father Tony Herold I realize that I am talking to the choir when I share these reflections with you each week. Those of you who take the time to read this are truly committed to the Church, our parish and our way of life as Catholic Christians. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. There are many reasons for a person to join Saint Paul Parish. For some, they want to get married and have a church that will provide a venue for their wedding and a place to get prepared for their big day. We are very honored to journey with couples in this way. Others join the parish for the great school we have. Undoubtedly we are pleased and fortunate to provide such a quality Catholic education for our children. Saint Paul School is one of the great gifts our parish offers. Undoubtedly there are various other reasons to join the parish However, there is one reason that trumps them all. The real reason to be a part of a parish community is to do the will of God. Jesus Christ, the Son of God perfectly shows us the will of our heavenly Father. He knows that we need a community of faith to pass on the message of the Gospel, to share in the sacraments that communicate to us the grace of Christ, and to gather for true worship in the Eucharist a worship that demands a way of life consistent with the God we honor and praise. Our ninth core value as a parish speaks of this reality. It is stated this way: Connecting to Community: We are faithful to the Sunday (or Saturday night) gathering of the Eucharist at St. Paul the Apostle Parish realizing that God has called us to this community. We recognize the importance of our presence together and joyfully offer our gifts to advance our mission as a parish. It makes no sense to me to belong to a parish if you do not participate in the Eucharistic life of that parish. We are not a club, we are a community of faith. I realize that it doesn t seem to some to be a community, but each of us should try to make this value a reality. Relationships are key as well as the faith that allows us to see we are the Body of Christ. Questions to ponder. *There are many reasons to join a parish why did you join our parish? Why would it be important to faithfully attend the Eucharist (Mass) in your parish? How can I be more connected to my parish through the sharing of my gifts and talents? How can I be more joyful in prayer and worship?
3 Written By-Michael Havercamp Don s surgery had gone well. The doctors had repaired the mitral valve in his heart and they thought all was well. A day later, any bit of security came crashing down. He experienced a major setback and his life was in grave danger. Neither he nor his wife Mary knew if he would ever come out of it. This was one of the moments that the Adams experienced the profound love of God. Leading up to the surgery, God gave me special moments with family and friends to discuss what s really important in life, Don says, primarily our faith and relationships. He was surprised by the peace he had rolling into the operating room, something that transcended his understanding given the circumstances. Today he attributes that peace to the many prayers offered by family, friends, and the faith community at St. Paul s. What a humbling experience to know so many others truly care, that they are praying especially for you, Don reflects. Once you experience this love from God through others, it heightens your awareness of the true importance of the simple act of praying for others. I m not sure if there s a more powerful thing to do for someone! Both Don and Mary are convicted about the power and priority of prayer. I ve leaned heavily on others prayers in those times of need when I couldn t pray myself, Mary says. I believe it is the prayers of these prayer warriors that have brought me through the hardest moments of my life. Don and Mary are the first to tell you that they re not perfect, that they are a work in progress. However, they know that we cannot even begin to walk as a disciple of Jesus without developing a daily habit of prayer. It all begins with a deep friendship with Jesus, Don says. This friendship is nurtured by spending time with Him. Mary prays the Rosary every day and uses it as a way to pray specifically for her husband and children. I feel that if I m not going to pray for my family every day, who will? Mary asks. It s like the most important thing I can do for them as a mom. Don begins his days early in the morning where he can find silence and solitude with God. That quiet time and conversation with Jesus early in the morning has made a dramatic impact on my life, Don notes. It has helped me become much more aware of others and what God desires from me. Over the years, prayer has become more personal and natural for them. Prayer has brought Mary to a place where she is content just to be in God s presence. I don t have to do or think anything, just feel the warmth of His love and peace. Jesus is not only God but friend, someone with whom she can talk to daily. I have a constant companion in Jesus, Mary says. I really can t imagine a day without prayer. Don and Mary Adams on the Power of Prayer
4 Connecting to the Community The 9th Guiding Value Written By: Tasha Havercamp For our family, it has been a summer full of a lot of fun trips and excursions. Because of that, we have been worshiping in Mass at various parishes while we are traveling. It s an adventure finding a Catholic church in various states (Michigan, Alaska, etc.) and can be quite an experience to witness and worship with people from different places. It makes me thankful for the beauty of the Catholic liturgy that is celebrated universally all over the world. However, worshipping in other places often leaves me aching for St. Paul s. When our family returned this past weekend after another week of traveling, I felt like I had truly come home. Our children were excited to see their friends and I was moved by a liturgy with people that I know and love and a worship experience that is familiar to me. I remember that feeling growing up. Even now, many years after I ve left home, when I go back to worship in my old community that my parents faithfully brought me to each week, I see the faces of those that lived life with us. It is a connection that is deeper than words. Here at St. Paul s, many new people are joining our church. When asked why, many of them say they feel a certain warmth and reception that is alive and fresh. How incredible that people are drawn here because they feel cared for. That is what relational ministry looks like. It s easy to attend Mass and be anonymous. Step in and step out. Punch the ticket. I ve been there. I ve lived that way in my Catholic faith. But to experience Catholicism in its fullness is to experience the Eucharistic reality of connection to community. Sometimes it is easier to keep a safe distance, to not allow the world to really see you. However, I m not sure that is what Christ is calling us to do. When we become connected to our fellow brothers and sisters, we gain an insight and understanding of the true reality of the living Eucharist, Christ s presence among us. I challenge you to invest, to really dig in and connect to this incredible community of St. Paul s. Allow yourself to be known. Step out of your comfort zone. Reach out and shake the hand of the person you sit next to every week. Learn a new name. Invite a friend to coffee. Dig deep into this parish that draws people in. Invest yourself. And discover what it means to encounter Christ in this parish you call home.

And we understand that the Eucharist is the center of our life in faith: in our families, parish, local church and throughout the world. We are the stewards of Christ s life in the Eucharist. We are called to put the Eucharist into action. How do we do that? St. Paul enjoins us to be always grateful, to worship, to try to understand the will of the Lord and to watch carefully how we live. What are some of the ways we can put the Eucharist into action this week? 5th Annual Spirit of the Prairie Sunday, August 23, 2015, from 3:00 6:00 pm enjoy a spiritfilled afternoon at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat, th Avenue, near Wheatland, Iowa.
