2 Palm Sunday April 14, 2019 Dear St. Martin Community, It is Holy Week. It is a sacred week to remember and celebrate the greatest love of all expressed in the suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus. I have a sacred wish to ask from you: please never miss a sacred moment this holy week. This week has so much to tell us. The liturgies (the holy celebrations) of the Holy Week invite us to engage ourselves with the words and actions of the Lord Jesus. It is sacred moment to contemplate the journey of Jesus on his way of the cross that leads to his Resurrection the very central mystery of our Christian faith. A Reflection Before the beginning of the Good Friday Liturgy, we will pray together the Liturgy of the Hours, the prayer of the Church, with the celebration of the tenebrae - literally translated: darkness. Seven candles are lit at the sanctuary and which will be individually extinguished at the end of each psalm-prayer. Easter Vigil - The long and complex liturgy of the Easter Vigil begins with a very basic symbol of light, the Paschal Candle, lit from a blessed fire and illuminating the darkness of the church. In the symbol of water, we will celebrate the baptism of the Elect welcoming them to our Christian community. This Vigil is called the Vigil of all Vigils because we await together the promise of our new life in Christ Jesus, the Risen One. Let me share with you an overview of the Holy Week Liturgy. Palm Sunday We re-enact the way of Jesus with his disciples to Jerusalem. We gather as disciples of Jesus holding palm branches and singing songs of praise to the King who rides on a donkey, a symbol of humility, and not one of power as symbolize by a horse. This re-enactment of Jesus entrance to Jerusalem leads us to the dramatic account of Jesus Passion. This year it is according to the Passion account of St. Luke. Maundy Thursday The Basin and towel are symbols of the self-giving and sharing of Jesus in our humanity. Jesus, the servant of all, washing the feet of the disciples gives us an insight into his selfemptying on the cross. Bare feet make us see our own vulnerability. Stooping to wash and dry the feet is a sign of respect for our neighbor s weakness and poverty. This action of genuine service points to the self-giving and sharing of Jesus in the Eucharist. Up to now, we partake of his Body and Blood in Holy Communion so as to share in his life in the here and now. Good Friday There is no Mass, but only the Good Friday Service. This liturgy invites us to embrace deep silence, at the beginning and end. Silence is the language of God. This what makes the Good Friday Liturgy a moving experience. We will be bearing the cross in silence, passing it around, as our way of connecting with each other s cross. We are never alone. Christ is with us as we bear the cross. Then at one point, one by one, barefooted, we will approach to venerate the Cross for it is in the Crucified One that we can only find meaning in our suffering. Again, don t miss a moment this holy week. The week tells us of God s repeated attempts, since the beginning of time, to love you and save you. How can you shape your schedule this Holy Week so that you can participate in the celebration of Lord s suffering, death and resurrection? Jesus is counting on each one of us this Holy Week. Fr. Join us on Thursday, April 18 th For Seven Churches Visitation (Visita Iglesia) sponsored by the St. Martin s Young Adult Ministry. Following Holy Thursday Mass, all parishioners are invited to join us in prayer at the Altar of Repose, then we will travel to 6 nearby parishes to pray and keep watch with our Lord before returning to St. Martin s around 11pm. You may join for any or all of the stops. Carpools will be available for those that would like a ride. Prayer Petitions to be delivered to Lourdes, France The Order of Malta is accepting Prayer Petitions to be hand carried by one of our St. Martin of Tours parishioner and placed in the petition box in the Grotto during the Order of Malta's Annual May Pilgrimage to Lourdes, France. Prayer Petition for health and well-being for you/your family and friends or other requests to Our Lady of Lourdes can be found at all the Church entrances. Please fill it in and drop it in the designated labeled boxes no later than 1 PM on April 28th. Join our Welcome Ministry The Welcome Ministry assists the pastoral staff in welcoming new members to the parish community and also in aiding new members to become active and integrated in the faith life of the parish community. 4 Faith Formation Corner For this week s Faith Formation Corner we are going to focus our reflection on Jesus experience of the Passover and preparing for his Passion. As we begin, can you recall a time when you dreaded something in your near future? With this in mind, let us enter into Luke s gospel as Jesus sits to celebrate Passover with his apostles. We hear Jesus say, I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, so how do we imagine Jesus sounded as he shared this desire? Did he sound scared? Was he peaceful? How do you imagine Jesus sounded? In the next paragraph Jesus reveals that he will be betrayed. Have you ever shared a meal with someone that you know betrayed you? As we consider that Jesus knew his betrayal would lead to his torturous death, what might Jesus have been feeling as he shared Passover with his betrayer? Later in the text as Jesus is praying at the Mount of Olives, his disciples fall asleep. Have you experienced important moments when the people you were counting on let you down? How do you imagine Jesus sounded when he asked, Why are you sleeping? Was he yelling? Was he whispering under his breath? Was he peaceful and confident because of his prayer? As we prepare to enter into this Holy Week, let us ask Jesus for the grace to more deeply understand what he was feeling throughout his Passion. The nursery is available from the 8:30am Mass until after the 11:30am Mass, but please let us know if you d like to use it during a different Mass. Please enjoy this wonderful space where your child can feel comfortable and you can still observe Mass streamed on the TV. What Lenten practices might help us to remain with Jesus in the midst of the Passion instead of running away like many of his closest friends?
