1 Volume XLI, No. 5 The Banner January 31, 2017 Third Focus Point: LEADERSHIP Transition Team Requests Guidance from Adult Sunday School Classes January 29: Transition Team distributed a Leadership Sheet to Adult Sunday School Classes (call the office for a copy) February 5: Transition Team members will lead discussions in each Sunday School class February 12: Sunday School classes will gather in Fellowship Hall for feed back and processing Your Transition Team is now considering the Focus Point of Leadership. We are asking for your input in identifying priorities related to leadership. Leadership involves both individual leaders and the processes (ways and means) used by leaders to help ABC accomplish goals. On Sunday February 5, each Sunday School class will have a Transition Team member lead a discussion. The following week, February 12, come to the during Sunday School for a large group session.
2 FEBRUARY 5 11:00am Worship Is What I Heard What God Said? Matthew 5:21-37 Rev. Mike Poole 6:00 pm 3F Food, Fellowship & Food for Thought The Big Game Fellowship Greetings from Pastor Mike Poole. WELCOME HOME GENTLE JIM! Last Sunday, our Baptist men led the church in worship. The message How in the World Did I End Up Here? focused on God s calling. Seldom have Baptists heard so much bible in one hour. Readings from Jeremiah, Psalm 139, Acts, and the Holy Gospel of John filled our hearts with awe. Prayers and a mission moment were meaningful. Thanks to our men Tony Roberts, Mike Overstreet, Joel Piazza, Charles Meade, Steve Lowe, John Berry, Willie Morris, and Roger Garrett. Our Baptist Men s Day choir of 20+ sang a powerful song Lord, Here I am. In preparation for the service, Br. Jim Woodrum and I met at Cracker Barrel, exit 7. Two hours and countless ABC stories later, we parted. Although Jim frequently speaks in public, he was especially excited about preaching in his home church. Between eggs and hash-brown casserole, Jim spoke fondly of his childhood with Abingdon Baptist folk. I m not an angry former Baptist. Not at all. His face lightened while sharing stories of hiking with Ray Duncan; or Harry Denton s genius of pulling a silver dollar from behind children s ears then placing it in their hands; or the Shalom Singers; or Reverend Pace s ability to make sermons come alive. Five years ago, Jim was accepted as a postulant with the Society of St. John the Evangelist. In Cambridge, MA. and became an initially professed member in He now serves as the Director of Music and Liturgy with SSJE and takes an active part in preaching, teaching, and spiritual direction. In other words, he s a genuine Episcopalian monk who loves Jesus. Will the church be okay with me wearing my habit and sash? The kids will love it, I assured. And they did. John Daniels, who never forgets a bit of humor, later chimed: Harry Denton called him Hotshot and the elder Jim was Hotshot s Daddy. I ll call him Gentle Jim. Welcome home! Pastor Mike, IIM
