2 AUGUST 1, :00am Worship Possessed by Possessions Luke 12:13-21 Hosea 11:1-11 7:00pm DownHome Worship at Ken & Sarah Johnson s 170 Par Place, Abingdon From Your Pastor... Dear Church Family, I love that passage from Matthew 6:25 and following where Jesus said something like (my translation), Everybody just needs to cool it with your worrying about everything. At least that s the way I think most of us in the 21 st century hear it. What he really said was, 25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (NIV) First century folk had a few things to worry about that most of us don t. Jesus words reveal that many struggled to do anything but fret about where their next meal would come from. When Jesus talks about eating, drinking, and being clothed, he meant it, literally. Abject poverty was a way of life for the vast majority of the inhabitants of Palestine. Now, If you didn t know for sure how I was going to provide the next meal for my family, that dilemma would occupy my every waking thought to the exclusion of all else. Yet, Jesus tells these folks to cool it with your worrying about everything. Even in their poverty and need of the most essential provisions for life, Jesus insisted that they put their energies into seeking first the Kingdom of God. Now, I could probably make a good case for how Jesus expectations were just a bit unreasonable, but where would that leave us? Few of us reading this article have to struggle with hunger or shelter or clothing yet we find other things about which to be anxious. It is almost as if our capacity for anxiety is limitless. No matter what we have or how many of our wants, needs, or desires have been met, we ll find that teeny tiny speck of the last thing in the world on which to affix our anxiousness. According to Jesus, we have some choice in the matter. The choice rests on each of us as to what or whom we shall worry. So why is it that with our most essential needs met in abundance we choose to worry about smaller and smaller matters? I can t even begin to speculate about that one, but I do know that the energy we expend on the worries of this world the less energy we will have to seek first the Kingdom of God and all God s righteousness. All things beside the Kingdom and righteousness of God are God s responsibility. Isn t it truly time to embrace the high calling of God to live the Kingdom of God to life instead of and in spite of all the things that would devour that which belongs to God? I can t wait to see you Sunday! Your Pastor, Steve

Much thanks to all the folks who were so helpful in getting the annual Senior Adult picnic together. Many helped get everything ready for the day, many helped clean up when the party was over, 40 or more came bringing food in a spirit of great fun and fellowship. Don and Opal Salyers spent quite a bit of time and energy making a large crockpot of chili. Linda Belisle sent a large container of coleslaw. Charles Grogan and Harold Dunaway were in charge of cooking to perfection the delicious wieners. It was good to have Virginia Smith with us again and also, several visitors. Many of you were with us in our thoughts as we had a period of prayer requests and prayer. We will soon be required to make our first deposit to Springmaid. Please make your check of $100 each to Abingdon Baptist Church. It may be put in regular offering plate if you have marked it clearly for the Beach Trip. The total cost this year will be $250. This will cover transportation, three nights lodging, bountiful Springmaid breakfast each morning, two shows, and one seafood buffet dinner. The only extra expense will be lunch each day and the evening meal on Monday. wanda
