The Love of God In the movie Cast Away, Tom Hanks airplane crashes off shore of an uninhabited island in the Pacific. After months of searching, his would-be-rescuers declare him lost and dead. But it was Hanks, stranded alone on that tiny island, who had lost everything he loved. He s been cast away. To ease his pain, Hanks paints a face on a soccer ball found among the wreckage and names it Wilson. Despite many heart to heart conversations, an imaginary friend can only do so much. Driven by the agony of separation, he fashions a crude raft and in the face of almost certain death attempts to cross the ocean. Life is a continuum of separation and loss. We enter the world by losing the comfort of a mother's womb. From childhood to adolescence to young adulthood, etc., each new stage of life requires losing a more familiar one. Moreover, each choice in life requires separation from something else. On a congregational level, suffering occurs when we say goodbye to a special era in the life the church, or to close friends or admired leaders. Sometimes suffering occurs by letting go of unfulfilled dreams and lost opportunities. Such goodbyes are necessary in order to make room for new arrivals. When I began as your Intentional Interim Minister 16 months ago, we knew I would be leaving. The time has flown. So many of you have become dear to me. I have loved you and that will not stop. Serving with you reconnected me with childhood roots that had been almost forgotten. My final Sunday will be August 27. Between now and then, much work remains. Please remember to pray as the Transition Team concludes their work. Also, pray for the newly elected Pastor Search Committee as they begin their work. In Romans 8, Paul says that in suffering, the Spirit intercedes for us with words our mouths and minds do not know. Our suffering is laid at God s feet with "groaning's that cannot be uttered in human terms." Christ suffers with us. On the other hand, we are comforted with the assurance that God is "working ALL things together for good." Despite the countless losses we suffer in life, there is one thing that will never be lost to us - God's love. Paul asks, "Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?.no! In all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus." Friends, we will see our loved ones again. And we will be together again. We are bound together by the boundless love of God. Now hear God s words of comfort for us today. Having served, since 2008, in various ministerial settings including extensive campus life work, David also has clinical experience in mental health counseling ranging from crisis response to organizational leadership and management. When he s not serving his congregation or community, you can find him spending time with his wife, Josi, and children, Eli and Avery or with a golf club or a fishing rod in hand!
