2 SEPTEMBER 16, :00am Worship Which Jesus Do You Want? Mark 8:27-38 Psalm 19 6:00pm Sunday Night Kaffee Welcome Larry Barrett From Your Pastor... Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, One of my little passions in life is collecting old things. I wouldn t consider myself an antique collector. I m really most interested in things like my father might have used or those things he might have described to me. I like things that perhaps have little value to anyone else but me. I now have possession of a candy dish that my Grandfather Croft used to have by his chair amply supplied for grandchildren with a sweet tooth. I have a pitcher my mother used to mix formula for all of her babies. I m not one of those people that try to romanticize the past. I m also not one of those whose mantra seems to be nothing is as good as it used to be ; and by extension: all things old are good; all things new are bad. There are some things I would gladly not resurrect. I don t want to bring back farming with a mule, cooking with a wood stove (if I had to chop all the wood), or that little shack out back. I like to think of the people and circumstances that some of my little treasures bring to remembrance. I like to think about all the love my great grandfather practiced as he held on to the reins (that now hang on my wall) when he did whatever needed doing to provide for his family. Mementoes are wonderful things but I don t worship these things. In fact, if things are an instrument to keep me living in the past, I d be better off without them. No, when my people were working with and using and laying their hands on these things, they were looking forward. They had in their minds that the future children of children of children would continue to create and live in a world that would be better than the day before. Further, I don t think the global political socioeconomic status was what was on their mind. I hope and pray that my people and your people had in mind a growing, pressing, reaching kind of faith. I think at the heart of our ancestors desire for us is that we would be better persons (not necessarily better-off). I think that s true for each of us individually and as a congregation. So I keep wondering: am I doing what they would be doing? I don t mean, are we doing the things they did, but are our actions revealing the kind of character our mothers and fathers of the faith had in mind when they peered into their future. I hope I am. I just I have to keep remembering that life and faith are more about the who than the what ; may our journey take us there. I can t wait to see you Sunday. Your pastor, Steven
