Daddy, Come Down Little brother Matt sometimes got the worst of big brother treatment. At such times, he d throw his head back and call DAAAAD. Jesus sometimes referred to God as Daddy as he uttered in prayer Abba. Isaiah pleads: Daddy God, the TRUE parent of us all, come down and set things in order. Come home and make things right. Make us safe. Be in charge. Teach us how to live (Isaiah 64 paraphrased.) American Christians have become confused about what matters. Is it stuff? How much? The size of our houses? How many cars we own? Things get measured by size and dollars. (A church I served boasted of the highest steeple.) Ultimately, what makes a Christian, a Church, or a nation truly great? JFK famously said, The gross national product does not (measure) the health of our children, the quality of their education, or the joy of their play. It does not include the beauty of our poetry or the strength of our marriages; the intelligence of our public debate or the integrity of our public officials. It measures neither our wit nor our courage; neither our wisdom nor our learning; neither our compassion nor our devotion to our country; it measures everything, in short, except that which makes life worthwhile. ADVENT is a season of anticipation and hope. The nation is hoping for a someone to come and solve problems. (A President?) But Friends, Christians know that Someone has already come. His name is Jesus. WE are ambassadors of Christ to the nation and the world. Our dear planet earth has only ONE TRUE Father ONE TRUE God our Creator and Sustainer who is our future and our hope. God came down in Christ with good news. John writes, God is love and everyone who lives a life of love is born of God and truly knows God. But those who do not live in love do not know God for God is love. Either this is true or it is false, but it is not both. If we want our world, our country, the state of Virginia, Abingdon or Main Street to know this good news, then it s our task to be first in line. If we want God to establish justice, then let us first practice God s justice. If we want forgiveness to abound or generosity, then let us be first forgivers and first givers. As the body of Christ, the church has been created and called for such a time as this. Our mission is to be Christ s presence in a desperate world loving God, loving God s people, loving God s world. Nobody says it s easy. Our vision is to create places where people welcome God s presence and where we love God for who God is. We do that by practicing Christ s love here in this place in this time. Oh that God would rend the heavens and come down. But, wait he already did. This is GOOD NEWS. Amen. Pastor Mike, IIM

5 Abingdon Float Riders Needed Bring your child to ride this years Christmas Sleigh in the 2016 Christmas Parade Meet at Farris Funeral home at 5:15pm to ride the float. Contact Nan Jones for more information: Thank you Abingdon Baptist Church for serving as a Relay Center for Operation Christmas Child Thirteen Abingdon Baptist Church Volunteers gave 257 hours in receiving, packing and transferring 185 Cartons of Shoeboxes. These cartons contained 3,064 shoeboxes which were transferred to Richlands Presbyterian Church and loaded into a trailer for transfer to the processing warehouse n Boone, NC. Abingdon Baptist Church had 192 shoeboxes in this total of shoeboxes.
