You probably already know about the upcoming Valentine s Banquet on February 13 th sponsored by the WMU and Children s Department. And you probably already know that worship on February 17 th will be led by the women of the church and will conclude the Focus on WMU Week. You may not know, however, that February is Martha Stearns Marshall month in the life of Cooperative Baptists. Instituted by Baptist Women in Ministry (BWIM) in 2007, Martha Sterns Marshall Day of Preaching has grown to include 217 churches in This year even more are expected to participate. The idea is simple encourage churches to celebrate the voices of women preachers and to educate congregations about the growing place for women congregational leadership and preaching ministries. Churches do this by choosing a Sunday in February and inviting a woman to preach. Many will present their preacher with a certificate of recognition and all are encouraged to submit her name to BWIM for inclusion in the official list of MSM Preachers. Named for an 18 th century Baptist preacher from the southern United States, Martha Sterns Marshall Day is an important step in opening doors of opportunity for women in ministry. But we don t have to wait for February to come around again before we hear how women are serving the Kingdom of God through local church ministry. We can hear from these women anytime by picking up a copy of the book This is What a Preacher Looks Like, a collection of sermons by a few of today s women preachers. Several of my personal friends have their work included in this compilation! In their honor, I have donated a copy of this book to our church library and I would invite anyone who is interested to check it out, take a look, and rejoice with me at the contributions of women who share the Gospel and their gifts through the ministry of preaching.
