Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, I grew up in a rather small Baptist Congregation in Roanoke. It was mostly made up of 5 or 6 families. I had no experience with celebrating the season of Lent. In fact, it wasn t until 1994, when I became pastor of Woodland Heights Church in Richmond, that I actually began to get a handle on its meaning. I knew that Lent had something to do with the days before Easter, but that was about it. Lent, in its essence, are the forty days before Easter (excluding Sundays). Their purpose is to help us prepare for Holy Week by taking stock of our lives. By observing Lent, we ready our souls to walk with Jesus through the events surrounding the Passions of Christ, Christ s crucifixion, His death and then Christ s resurrection. There are such few days to relive the experience of Holy Week with Christ, that we believers need every minute of those 40 days to prepare our hearts, minds and souls. The preparation has traditionally focused on four specific areas. They are prayer, penitence, almsgiving, and self-denial. We ve been sharing in Sunday morning worship much of the meaning of these practices, so I ll not spend any time explaining. However, these are the practices that are the most revealing and are the most specific indicators of the health of our relationship with God. These are the areas of our Christian faith that are most indicative of how close we are to God. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday of next week. We will once again be gathering with other Main Street Congregations to remind each other of our deepest need that only Christ can fill. (See Banner cover) As we draw near to the days of preparation, I invite you to take a journey with Jesus this year. Walk with Christ through prayer, scripture, and action, that you might know the inexpressible richness of His splendid gift: His life! I can t wait to see you Sunday! Your pastor and friend, Steven
