2 FEBRUARY 19 11:00am Worship Easily Said Hardly Done Matthew 6:24-34 Rev. Mike Poole 6:00 pm 3F Food, Fellowship & Food for Thought Mike Overstreet Greetings from Pastor Mike Poole. Two Eyes Harold Kushner is a Jewish Rabbi with brilliant insights into the Old Testament. (You may have read best sellers Why Bad Things Happen to Good People and How Good Do Your Have to Be?) The Rabbi comments on Leviticus 13 a long chapter that tells the young, fledgling nation of Israel what to do when a person has a contagious skin disease. Leviticus says, "When anyone has a swelling or a rash or a bright spot on his skin that may become an infectious skin disease, he must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons who is a priest.and (if) the sore appears to be more than skin deep, it is an infectious skin disease. When the priest examines him, he shall pronounce him ceremonially unclean. If the spot on his skin is white but does not appear to be more than skin deep the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is only a rash. Rabbi Kushner says that in OT days, 3000 years ago, the village priest also functioned as chief medicine man and healer. It was up to the priest (the ko-hen) to determine the seriousness of the affliction. Kushner observes that in making a diagnosis, the priest would need both eyes. He would need to see not only the infected skin the diseased, but also he must see the healthy skin around it. A one-eyed view would only see the problem. A two-eyed view sees also the possibility. So often in life we are using only one eye. With that one-eyed view, we see the bad in others their inconsistencies, flaws, disappointing behaviors, but we fail to see the good. With one-eyed vision, we label, exclude, and write people off people who in reality still have much good to offer. Anyone can get stuck on flaws and defects in another, (a spouse, child, parent, mother, father, friend, teacher, pastor, boss, President, congresspersons add your own source of disappointment.) One-eyed vision concentrates on those flaws, wraps itself in those hurts, and festers internal despair with no way forward. When this happens, in marriage or any relationship, it seems easier to get out, call it quits, shut the door, and end rather than mend the relationship. This one-eyed simple solution is actually an illusion. What if we practice two-eyed living? What if we focus on not only other people s blights but also the things that they do really well? Everyone does something well. What if we embrace strengths AND weaknesses in others as part of a well wrapped gift from God given for our good? Can you put a face and name on that thought? What if God is not a one-eyed Cyclops ready to pounce, but a loving parent who with both eyes wide open always sees something to celebrate. And God saw all that was made and it was good. Pastor Mike, IIM
