I want to thank Vicki Burkett for filling in for me last Sunday as I was away in Michigan for a reunion of Margaret s family and to celebrate her mother s 80 th birthday. All of Margaret s family: her brother, sisters and cousins and their families (from Seattle, Houston, Tulsa, Portland, Boca Raton, Wisconsin, and Peoria and parts in between) were in attendance just outside of Elkhart, Indiana. The entire family had not gathered in many years and it was a rich experience to catch up with everyone and meet all the new little ones! I also want to thank Scott Blevins and Carrie Baxter for their work in getting the information together for our special tribute to our veterans last Sunday. Over sixty photos and information about our veterans was submitted. What a grand heritage we have as a church! This coming week is. I hope you are planning to participate in some way. I m sure Carrie could still use some workers OR donations OR enroll your children/grandchildren or neighborhood children OR (most importantly) pray for young lives to be touched by the transforming power of God s love. There really is something for everyone to do. I m looking forward to leading the music each day and leading the music activity classes. We are going to have a GALACTIC BLAST! All About Seniors... Another successful Centennial event. The July 4th worship service was great. It honored all veterans from our church. There were lots of men as well as women that were listed or shown on the screen. Thank you to Scott Blevins for organizing this event. On Wednesday night July 14 Mary Pruner will be giving information about early years of Abingdon Baptist Church that she learned from her family. Her grandfather, Rev. H. W. Belamy, was our first pastor. Keep watching the Banner for other events that are being planned for the Centennial year. If you are interested in buying a Centennial shirt, be sure to call the church office this week. The t-shirts are $8 each and the shirts with collars are $20. The colors are really pretty. Remember our shut-in and homebound members. Try to let them know that you care by phone, mail or a visit. wanda

5 From Your Pastor... Dear Church Family, It s been two weeks, and the effects of the Shalom Singer s reunion still linger as a wonderful memory. Events of this magnitude don t just fall out of the sky. Many folks have worked very hard for months to try and make everything just right. I know I am going to miss someone but, I wouldn t miss the chance to say thanks to as many of those folks as possible. First, I want to thank Trula Harris who searched, hunted, and begged for contact information for Shalom Singers. She compiled the mailing list and made contacts with the many Shalom-er s scattered far and wide. The Shalom Singer s weekend began with an informal cookout on Friday evening. Many thanks go to those who prepared and served the meal that evening. Folks like Wanda Lowe, Carrie Baxter, Chris & J.E. King, Charlene Phelps, Mike Overstreet, Julia Childers, and Mary Garrett really went above and beyond to put that event together. And, thanks to Shoney s for donating the hamburgers and hotdogs. The following evening ABC welcomed the Shalom Singers to a dinner in our fellowship hall. Folks like Mike Overstreet, Julia Childers, J.E. & Chris King, Charlene Phleps, and Wanda Lowe and Carrie Baxter took care of the preparation, service and clean-up. Many thanks go to Todd Baxter for preparing the Lasagna. It was terrific. The part of the weekend that most of us saw (Sunday Morning) involved a great deal of planning and preparation. I want to thank Don Nixon for working so closely with Parke over many weeks to put together such a meaningful remembrance of this important time in the history of our Church. I want to thank the Shalom Singers who gathered on Saturday to rehearse so that the music they shared would be same quality to which they were accustomed. I want to thank Carol Clifton for all the preparation she made to provide such excellent accompaniment for the entire morning s worship. I also want to thank each and every Shalom Singer many of whom rearranged schedules, traveled great distances, and made sacrifices in order to help us remember and celebrate the 100 th year of ministry at Abingdon Baptist Church. Not only was the gift of memory and music so important but Abingdon Baptist Church will enjoy the richness added to our worship by the worship resources (stoles, robes, etc) presented by the choir. I can t help but mention my utmost gratitude for one more person without whose dedication, hard work, commitment, and love for Abingdon Baptist Church this celebration would never have happened: Carrie Baxter. Carrie worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the Shalom Singer weekend was nothing short of perfect. Thank you, Carrie! I am most thankful to God for the gift of faith, love, and music that God has shared with us through such great leaders as Dr. Lawrence Pace and Mr. Don Moore. They are truly part of the great cloud of witnesses that point us resolutely towards the future of Abingdon Baptist Church. Your pastor, Steve
