Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, I believe that most people become who they are according to what they believe. For instance, if you believe the world is a place to be feared, you will most probably become someone who lives in distrust; always on guard against the intentions of others. Of course you ll probably be safe, but you ll never know deep and embracing love. On the other hand, if you are a person who believes that everyone is good, you ll likely be disappointed in nearly everyone to some degree. There is an African folk tale about a tribe that would gather once a year for young men to find a bride. They would pay for the privilege of marriage with livestock given to their fathers. If a woman was especially beautiful, the would -be groom might pay five goats. If she were somewhat less attractive, perhaps one or two goats would do. One year at the annual gathering, a young man had his eye caught by a rather ordinary-looking young woman. His friends were shocked when they discovered that he had offered her father the sum of ten goats for her hand. His friends ridiculed him for his foolish choice. The shocked father, however, accepted the price immediately. They married that very day. A year went by, and the tribe gathered once again. The young man s friends began to point and laugh at him while he was still far off. They asked, "And how is your ten-goat bride?" Just then, the most beautiful woman they had ever seen stepped into their presence. As their mouths hung open, the young man asked, What s wrong? Don t you recognize my bride?" In reality, her appearance hadn t changed at all. The thing that made the biggest difference in her life was the knowledge of how much her husband regarded her as a treasure. After all, he had paid the huge sum of ten goats to make her his bride. It was the knowledge about her that caused her to glow from within. Our Heavenly Father, paid for us with the blood of His only son. Imagine how different we would appear to the world, if we lived like the treasure we truly are. I can t wait to see you Sunday. 5 Scholarship Information... The David L. Miller scholarship program has been established in honor of David L. Miller by his family. This scholarship is available to students who have been accepted or are currently enrolled full-time in an accredited institution of higher education. If you or someone you know qualifies for this scholarship, please come by the church office for an application. Congratulations... Summer is almost here and DownHome worship has already started every Sunday evening at 7:00pm. We are enlisting hosts for each Sunday night throughout the summer (through August 26). Over the past couple of years, many different folks have opened up their backyards (or the Farmer s Market Pavilion) for the church to gather for a time of worship and fellowship. Each host works with our church staff to coordinate the program and refreshments. Check your summer plans. Please call the church office at soon to reserve your Sunday Night on the DownHome calendar. You will be blessed and be a blessing to others. Let s have the summer calendar filled as soon as possible.

6 During the month of June, the Youth are challenged to bring food items for the Stone Soup Food Pantry. So, please help by bringing at least one can of food each time you come to church.
