Dear Church Family, I was in a meeting last week when, near the end of the meeting, one our committee members referenced an article they had read in the Religious Herald, our state Baptist newspaper. The article was more than anything an invitation to Virginia Baptists to suggest nominees to serve on the various boards and committees of the BGAV. That mention hit me pretty close to home because I serve on the Committee on Committees and Boards that receives those suggestions and actually makes the nominations at the annual meeting. Often we glance over such articles without a second thought. For some of us, such an office just doesn t seem important enough. Others are under the impression those positions are for clergy, only. Still others have the impression that they aren t important enough to serve in such a capacity. The worst of all myths is that we have lots of nominations from all over the state. The are all wrong, wrong, wrong! First of all, every task is important. The first committee on which I served was the Memorial Committee. I loved it. It gave me a chance to help Virginia Baptists remember great women and men who had given their lives in service to God in Virginia. It was my honor and privilege to do so. Also, denominational work isn t just for clergy. In fact, there are far more laity available than ministers for denominational roles. I would be perfectly satisfied if the vast majority of positions were filled with lay leaders (you know how preachers can be). Never think you are not qualified to serve. The only qualification necessary is that you be a member of a Virginia Baptist congregation and have a willingness to be used by God. Finally, last year our committee received only 10 suggestions for nominees. Out of 1400 Virginia Baptist Churches only a couple of folks thought it important enough to suggest a good committee or board member. The Committee on Boards and Committees needs your help to enlarge the tent of Virginia Baptist leadership. There is a larger issue at stake. It is easy for those of us who make our home in Southwest Virginia to sit out here and moan that everyone has forgotten about us. I have not found that to be the case. BGAV denominational leaders have always been more than attentive and willing to help in any endeavor. We owe it to our area of the state to stretch just a bit in order to stay connected; to communicate to the rest of Virginia Baptists that we are interested in what our state is doing and that we want to be a part. It also helps us to remind each other that we do indeed have the same opportunities for representation as any other part of the Commonwealth. So, this year, when you see that form in the Religious Herald seeking the name of possible nominees, take a minute and think of someone you know who fits the criteria and would make a good servant to the larger Virginia Baptist Family. We are so blessed with the wisdom, love, and commitment of so many Virginia Baptists who happen to live in the Southwestern part of our state that it would be a shame not to share them with the rest of the Virginia Baptist family. Those signed up for the Gospel Springfest at Ridgecrest in May, please make your deposit of $80. Make checks to Abingdon Baptist Church. We must let Ridgecrest know by March 1 the exact number so that we can get all of deposit back for anyone that has changed their mind. Two more recipe suggestions from the new cookbook: Cherry Coke Salad by Roy Morelock, page 34 and Sour Cream Cake by Cathe Nixon, page 92. I have been privileged to sample both. Let me know if you have tried anything that you would like to recommend. We hope to have a tasting party when the weather is more promising so be giving some thought to a recipe to try. wanda
