2 FEBRUARY 26 11:00am Worship Un-Blurred Glory Luke 9:28-43 Rev. Mike Poole 6:00 pm 3F Food, Fellowship & Food for Thought Willie Morris Greetings from Pastor Mike Poole. My Journey with God s Book more On Lee College graduation day, the Poole's were eager to begin a new chapter. With family in town for the occasion, we surprised everyone: While you re here, would you help us load a U-Haul? The next morning, we left for Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, TX. With almost heaven West Virginia in the mirror, we finally arrived in Dante s Ft. Worth; it was a sizzling 107 degrees! I spent the next three years in the grist of graduate classes, freight dock labor, and home sweet home. Sweltering evenings and late nights were the hardest and hottest imaginable. Cindy worked mornings in a local CPA office and arrived home to greet the boys after school. We also managed church commitments three times a week. The ever-amazing Cindy kept the home fires burning. My seminary diet included church history, pastoral care, systematic theology, Christian ethics, evangelism, Christian education, Old Testament Hebrew, and the writings of Paul in Greek. Yes, the Bible continued to be the main course on the buffet. It was and still is, after all, God s book. Even so, I was wrestling with a few things related to how the Bible got here. Why, for example, were there various accounts of the resurrection, or movements of Jesus and the disciples, or quotes? These divergences could be explained of course. But maintaining a rigid dictation theory of inspiration was challenging. In addition, I noticed that each of the biblical writers used a personal writing style, vocabulary, and local context; they wrote to particular audiences with specific issues in mind. All Bible writers seemed, in fact, quite human. Nevertheless, I knew then what I know now God s book is from God and, as for delivered by human beings all the more a miracle! Meanwhile, I dug into another book Leon McBeth s The Baptist Heritage. In 1845, Baptists in the south broke from northern Baptists over the issue of slavery. Baptists below the Mason Dixon Line sided with wealthy, slavery dependent, white plantation owners. They implored Pastors to favor interpretations of Scripture deemed to justify slavery, such as the curse of Ham or other slave references. I began thinking more soberly about how God s book gets distorted by human sinfulness. Even after Lincoln s 1864 Emancipation Proclamation, Christian segregationists (mis)used the Bible to sustain southern white dominance in Jesus name. In some cases, our forbears preached, taught, and practiced a version of faith that was (wrongly) shaped to fit their time. Nevertheless, history corrects the record. All defilements of God s greatest commandment eventually come to light. In June 1995, the SBC gathered in Atlanta and formally issued extensive resolutions apologizing to African Americans for unthinkable crimes done in the name of Jesus. Thankfully, Baptists have come a long way. I made a note: Walk lightly on hot -button cultural issues that require scriptural justifications for violating the Greatest Commandment. God s holy book declares: when all is said and done LOVE WINS. Pastor Mike, IIM
