Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, In 1900, 60% of the population of the United States lived in Rural Areas. The 2010 Census reports that figure has now dropped to 20% with 80% living in areas defined as urban. I really would have thought people were getting more and more interested in spreading out, getting a little space from our neighbors; seeking a greater measure of privacy. I thought the prevailing wisdom is that the age of intimacy is over. Apparently I was wrong. It may be that we have underestimated how alone we are in the first place. Kirkpatrick Sale reminds us that, in reality, even when we think we re a thousand miles from anyone, we are far from being truly alone: On any given acre of land - let's take some part of the forest of North Carolina, since it so happens we have figures for it - the human animal is outnumbered by other animals by about 125 million to one. According to estimates of the biologists who calculate these things, there figure to be about 50,000 vertebrates making their homes on such a one-acre parcel - toads, turtles, snakes and other reptiles; rodents, coatis, possums, raccoons and other mammals; robins, sparrows, woodpeckers, crows and other birds; plus fish and frogs and assorted amphibians. In addition there are some 124 million other animals - invertebrates - sharing that same turf, including 89 million mites, 28 million collembolans, 662,000 ants, 388,000 millipedes, 372,000 spiders, 90,000 earthworms, 45,000 termites, 19,000 snails, and a large number of various other crawling things, not including protozoa. And that says nothing about the vegetable life that may be found within that acre, from the pine trees and kudzu vines to the bacteria, molds and actinomycetes, altogether amounting to some 5,000 pounds worth of plant life, roughly 37 times the weight of the average human individual. 1 In our heart of hearts, we human beings truly crave intimacy. 5 Graduate Recognition... Congratulations to Elizabeth Russell, who graduated from James Madison University with honors on May 4, with a B.A. degree in Communications, a minor in French and Technical Writing. She just started her first job Monday! Congratulations to Kyle Pollard, who graduated from Radford University, Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. Degree in Psychology. He was also accepted into the Social Work program to pursue his Masters in Social Work at Radford University. Kyle is the son of Dr. Steven and Glenda Pollard. DownHome Worship......Beginning the first Sunday evening in June. It starts at 7:00pm and is a time when our Congregation comes together for Worship, snacks and fellowship. Hospitality is still needed. Please call the Church office ( ) if would like to host/co-host this event. Dates already planned: June 9 at 7:00pm in the Church Fellowship Hall, hosted by Charles and Irene Meade June 16 Abingdon Market pavilion. We will be hosting the Youth Choir from First Baptist Church, Richmond. Hotdog supper begins at 5:15pm followed by the concert at 6:00pm. Please bring your own lounge chairs. June 23??? Craft Class... The Craft Class had so much fun on the April road trip, we have planned another one for Tuesday, June 18! Come join us on a day of fun and great fellowship! We will leave the Church parking lot promptly at 10:30am. Our first stop will be in Rural Retreat at The Dutch Pantry for an early lunch. They have delicious sandwiches, hot dogs, soups, etc., amazing deserts. They also have all of the wonderful spices, herbs, candies, etc. that you find at an Amish store. There is plenty of seating inside and out. And they have Crafts for sale! After lunch, we will visit Snooper's Antiques in Wytheville. There are several interesting booths for us to browse through with a variety of items! After visiting Snooper's we will start for home, but we will make a detour in Marion to the famous "Dip Dog" for an afternoon snack! Lunch, shopping, and snack are all on your own. Please call the church office to reserve your spot on the coach ( ). Come join the fun! VBS... VBS JULY 8 12, 9:00AM-12:00PM Parents can stop by the church office (or call) to pre-register their children (or to pick up forms for kids they may know and want to invite). We can also forms if needed. Volunteers are needed to teach, to help decorate, set-up, breakdown, prepare snacks, etc. Call or Mary Garrett ( / mom959@gmail.com to sign up!
