Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, We had a great time at VBS last week. We had over 70 children registered. It was such a joy to work with Sinking Spring Presbyterian and St. Thomas Episcopal on this joint venture. To work with other believers towards the goal of sharing the good news of Jesus is simply thrilling. Much thanks goes to Mary Garrett and Charlene Phelps and their whole team for all of their hard work preparing for and working in VBS the whole week. Also, many thanks to Janet McGraw and Rev. Tim Reynolds of Sinking Spring Presbyterian for all the gifts they brought to make the week such a success. Vacation Bible School was a wonderful event, but we may never even see the things that were accomplished. I sat in a meeting the other day where a chaplain told how much Vacation Bible School had meant in his life. It seems that VBS was a bright spot in an otherwise difficult life. In a world where immediate results are prized over that which takes sustained effort over a great length of time, it s easy to forget that even the smallest things we do with the least of these often have timeless results. So, continue to pray for the children that attended; that the seeds that were sewn would continue to bloom. Some things simply take time. What other say about perseverance: --In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins -- not through strength but by perseverance. H. 5 Pencil Project...more information Even though it seems that school just ended, it's time again to "gear up" for back to school and the Friends of Audrey "Pencil Project." We will again be working with other local churches to provide 350 bags of school supplies to Ecumenical Faith in Action to be handed out to elementary school age children when they come in for their August food supplies from Stone Soup Food Pantry. In addition to providing 100 bags for the food pantry, we also provide a large box of supplies to each elementary school for the teachers to be able to hand out as needed. If you would rather make a donation, we will be shopping for the additional needed supplies the week of 7/29. We appreciate your past support and look forward to providing this needed assistance for children in Washington County. Kid s Pizza Party... Attention all Abingdon Baptist children and their parents: Join us in the Fellowship Hall on Wed., July 24 at 11:00am for a pizza party with games and prizes. Mr. Slice from Papa John's will be on hand for the festivities and pictures. Come and bring a friend. Call the church office ( ) to let us know how many to plan for. See you then! Peanut Butter Challenge... For Sale...Pews There are 5 church pews (available for viewing in the old Denton Sunday School room behind the Sanctuary) for sale. They are 15 feet long and priced at $ each, or best offer. If you are interested, contact the Church office ( ). 37 jars so far! During the month of July, we will be collecting peanut butter for Faith in Action, which will allow them to distribute more peanut butter to families in need. Peanut butter is vitally important to the hungry because it is not only a good source of protein, but also helps satisfy hunger when one is short on food. All items will be delivered at the end of the month to Stone Soup Food Pantry. Please bring some peanut butter when you come to church during July! From the Heart... I would like to thank everyone for their phone calls, cards and prayers during my recent illness with pneumonia. I truly appreciated all the love and kindness.
