Colonial Character, Dad and the Kids After the Battle of Germantown, General George Washington came across a stray dog wearing an inscribed collar marking him as the property of British general William Howe-the very man Washington was trying to defeat. As a well-bred gentleman and man of his times, Washington did the proper thing: he returned the dog to his adversary, along with a polite note. Though separated by ideals and loyalties, both Washington and Howe adhered to a common code of conduct. So writes Caroline Tiger in her book General Howe s Dog. Such lessons from the life of our first president beg to be retold. (Note pic of Grandson Tyler measuring himself by the Washington Monument.) More closely to home, despite limited formal education my father taught me a few things. You re never lost, just exploring new roads You re always closer to home than the last time you asked A long trip with six kids requires zero modesty & one empty can Keep your eye on the ball Get yourself into trouble; get yourself out Fishing is fun Don t make me come down there! If you have children, it s your job to clothe and feed them Successful career changes are possible Hard work is a fact, not a choice. Dad s schedule always seemed to be out of sync with life. He worked nightshift, evening shift, split shift and anything but normal shift. He slept less than anyone I ve ever known. Even so, I cannot recall a time when mom had to wake him more than one soft time. She would step to the bedroom door, tap lightly and say It s 5:00 (or whatever). No snooze alarm, no second calls. I asked dad, How can you get up so easily with such little sleep? He replied, I make up my mind before I sleep, and when time comes, it s already settled. We wrestle with many things that could be already settled. Wedding vows, fathering or mothering a child, how to treat people whom we identify as the enemy, etc. As a well-bred gentleman and man of his times, Washington did the proper thing: he returned the dog to his adversary, along with a polite note. Though separated by ideals and loyalties, both Washington and Howe adhered to a common code of conduct. Our country stands as a commentary on the character of our early founders. It will continue or fail as commentary of present leaders. The founders were not perfect, but they were principled. For them, some things were already settled and self evident. What are we telling our little ones by the way we live? What are our leaders modeling these days? When our days have passed and our grandkids are sitting around campfires, what stories will they tell? Character is perfected in squalls of adversity. Settling a few things before life s storms means the difference between lost at sea or found alive. When things go down, never give up. Presentation Time Line for Pastor Search Committee Sunday, July 9, The Transition Team made the recommendation that the Deacons proceed with the process of forming a Pastor Search Committee according to the by-laws of Abingdon Baptist. July 13 - Deacons Meeting: the Deacons will select 10 nominees. July 16 - Deacon nominees will be presented to the church and the congregation will have the opportunity to nominate a nominee not on the Deacon list. The nominees will be added to the 10 selected by the Deacons. July 23 - The congregation will vote, by ballot, to select at least two men & two women to serve on the PSC. The person receiving the next highest number of votes will be the 5th member. This can be either man or women. This is done according to the bylaws of ABC. August 5th Pastor Mike will have a training session for the newly elected PSC. Assuming August 5th is completed then on Sunday August 6th the PSC will be commissioned by the church.

School starts in Washington County on August 9 th. As in the past, the Friends of Audrey & Jill WMU Circle is working with other churches to provide school supply bags to Stone Soup Food Pantry (SSFP) to be given out to customers with children as they pick up their food. We would appreciate your help by either providing some of the items listed or providing a cash (check) donation and we will do the shopping. We will then assemble the bags and get them delivered to SSFP in time for them to be distributed before the first week of school. Thank you for your past support and we look forward to your support again this year.
