1 Volume XXXVIII, No. 38 The Banner September 23, 2014 This Sunday, September 28 th Washington County Fairgrounds 5:00pm Larry Barrett in Concert ~Meal provided by the Council of Deacons~
2 SEPTEMBER 28 11:00am Worship There Is NO Fight In Faith Matthew 21:23-32 Epistle: Philippian 2:1-3 5:00pm Church Picnic Washington County Fair Grounds Larry Barrett in Concert From Your Pastor... A couple of weeks ago I began a series of articles based on the theme of forgiveness. This article is a continuation of that series. As I've said many times before, I think there are a goodly number of us who think our need for forgiveness is minimal when compared to that of those whose sins are "really big." The condition of being "lost" through sin, however, is based neither on quantity or quality. Sin of any kind is unacceptable when it comes to having a relationship with God. God is pure, perfect, and spotless. There is nothing about God that has been corrupted. God's purity is based on His perfect selfless love for those created in His image. That is, everything that God does is for the benefit of His creation. God expects nothing less from his children (that's all of us). If we are to have a connection, a relationship to God, we must possess that same level of purity. Our every thought word, and deed must be aimed at serving God and in support of God's agenda for His creation. Anything, anything at all, less is sin. You can see how difficult...no, impossible it is to accomplish such a feat. In fact, that's exactly the idea the Apostle Paul had in mind when he wrote, "For all have sinned and fell short of the glory of God." Not only have we all sinned, we're incapable of avoiding sin, altogether. Even if you were the only person on earth and lived the purest life imaginable (that's a worldly concept), you would still be sinful and separated from God. You would still need the forgiveness that we can only receive from Christ's Crucifixion. Your sinfulness would still require the shedding of Christ's innocent blood in order for you to receive everlasting fellowship with God. So, you see, we need forgiveness; not just once, but continually. Forgiveness is not measured in amounts. Every one of us needs every single smidgen of the forgiveness that was provided through Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. See You Sunday! Steven
