Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, This week, Parke and I will be attending the Baptist General Association of Virginia s Annual Meeting in Richmond, Virginia. You might be wondering why we ministry types think it s so important to attend such things when they are so far away. You might even wonder, What does it matter to us? I can t answer for everyone, but I can tell you why I think it s so important. One reason: it s a chance to worship with the Baptist Family, that I work with on a daily basis, to be the Kingdom of God. Of course the worship is good and the preaching is exceptional, but more importantly, being able to experience God together with other believers helps bind us together. It helps remind us that we serve the same God and that as long as we submit ourselves to God s leadership, we are on the same mission. Another reason that I think such denominational meetings are important is that business is conducted. Now I know many who think that church business is about the most boring thing in the world (sometimes it is). The biggest reason that we gather for business in sessions is to get a feel for the ministries with whom we are partnering to do kingdom work. There are so many ministries that are going on in our name that we never know about, that we forget how important the work of those ministries is. The truth is that we are doing some amazing things just because of our cooperative mission gifts. We re involved in language ministry, church starts, disaster relief, hunger relief, counseling, and so many other things. Also, because we live in Southwest Virginia, it s easy to assume that what we think and do is not important to the rest of the state. I find that nothing could be farther from the truth. Our brothers and sisters in other parts of our state really want to hear from us. They want to know what s important to folks in Southwest Virginia. Our brothers and sisters want to find ways to minister with us. They need to know what kinds of resources we need. We need to be there if for no other reason than just to be the presence of our part of the state. I think it s of particular importance that Southwest Virginia folks attend Baptist meetings of the larger Baptist Family to share ideas and information that we may not otherwise be exposed to. It s one thing to read a book or an or even take part in a conference via the internet. Nothing, however, is ever so effective as looking someone in the eye, face to face, to know what s really in their heart. It s for these and a thousand other reasons that I have made it a regular practice of attending the Baptist General Association s Annual Meeting. I might not make the national meetings, but I find the state meeting to be large enough to bring together a significant number of Baptist from all over the state and small enough to still know each other. This is not a state meeting just for preachers. It s a meeting of Baptists. In fact, I and my colleagues frequently bemoan the fact that members of our congregations don t make the effort to be at the BGAV Annual Meetings. Put next year on your calendar. We can take up to 15 messengers, plan on being one of those 15. I can t wait to see you Sunday. Your pastor, Steven
