A book I read recently made some interesting statements that have me thinking about our worship at Abingdon Baptist. The book, A Primer on Christian Worship: Where We ve Been Where We Are Where We Can Go, by William Dyrness explores the theology and history of Christian worship. The author s definition of worship is worth chewing on: Christians believe that worship is (1) a set of culturally embedded and corporate practices (2) through which God forms them into the likeness of Christ, (3) in and through the story of Jesus Christ, (4) by the power of the Holy Spirit, in order that (5) they might live their lives to the glory of God. p.45 The following are some other thoughts worthy of reflection. Worship may be one central way in which we as believers can come to terms with both the misconceptions and the reality about God and ourselves. p.95 At the end of the day, worship has a single role to play in the lives of believers: to retell, re-present, and thus refresh the story of God s love and call. p.116 Speaking to the worry that worship should not become a performance whether we like it or not, when dozens of people gather together and someone sings or speaks, worship necessarily has the dimension of performance. So the question is not whether we should have a performance, but whether we plan a performance that resonates with the Gospel and that attracts our affections in appropriate ways. p.142 We have some important work to do each Sunday when we gather. 5 Pencil Project...more information Even though it seems that school just ended, it's time again to "gear up" for back to school and the Friends of Audrey "Pencil Project." We will again be working with other local churches to provide 350 bags of school supplies to Ecumenical Faith in Action to be handed out to elementary school age children when they come in for their August food supplies from Stone Soup Food Pantry. In addition to providing 100 bags for the food pantry, we also provide a large box of supplies to each elementary school for the teachers to be able to hand out as needed. If you would rather make a donation, we will be shopping for the additional needed supplies the week of 7/29. We appreciate your past support and look forward to providing this needed assistance for children in Washington County. Servants Needed... Each week on Wednesdays, here at the church, The Banner is prepared for mailing. We are in need of some volunteers who would commit to coming each Wednesday morning to help with this special task. Everything is automated, it s just a matter of putting it together. Please pray about it and if you feel that God is leading you, please call Susan in the Church office ( ). Peanut Butter Challenge... For Sale...Pews There are 5 church pews (available for viewing in the old Denton Sunday School room behind the Sanctuary) for sale. They are 15 feet long and priced at $ each, or best offer. If you are interested, contact the Church office ( ). 23 jars so far! During the month of July, we will be collecting peanut butter for Faith in Action, which will allow them to distribute more peanut butter to families in need. Peanut butter is vitally important to the hungry because it is not only a good source of protein, but also helps satisfy hunger when one is short on food. All items will be delivered at the end of the month to Stone Soup Food Pantry. Please bring some peanut butter when you come to church during July! All About Seniors... SENIOR ADULT PICNIC Tuesday, July 16, 11:00am-3:00pm Sugar Hollow Shelter A Come and bring a covered dish. We look forward to seeing you! Please note: If you would like a ride to Sugar Hollow from the Church, please give Susan a call in the office at by Monday afternoon. AND It's beach time! Reservations are now being accepted thru the church office for the annual beach trip. The dates are September 16th-19th. The cost is $ per person. A deposit of $ is due by July 11th.
