Dear Abingdon Baptist Family The office of deacon of Abingdon Baptist Church is a very important one. The church constitution and by-laws require that deacons serve the church in the truest meaning of servants in accordance with the meaning of the work and practice of deacons in the New Testament. A deacon is also expected to measure up to the Biblical requirements of Christian character. The deacons of the Abingdon Baptist Church are responsible for the church s spiritual welfare and oversight, for the working relationships of staff members, for pulpit supply, for general administration, and for the maintenance of buildings and grounds. Also, the deacons are the finance committee of the church, responsible for the budget and other finances. To be a deacon is to be honored by the confidence of the church; but in serving the church well, the deacon receives satisfaction as God s Kingdom is advanced and the gospel is proclaimed. DEACON NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS: Active member of Abingdon Baptist Church as of September 1, 2012 Age 21 years or older Any member nominated must be willing to serve Nominations must be made by 5:00pm, Tuesday, September 3, No household may be represented by more than one person on the active council of deacons One year must elapse, after serving a full term, before being eligible for re-election. In Luke 6:12-13 we read One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Being that the time has come to select six members who will serve as active deacons for the next three years, let us be reminded to pray fervently as Jesus did (all night long), to seek God s will for Abingdon Baptist Church.
