Hello Jake My recent encounter with Jake Lowe I met Jake Lowe last week. What an amazing, energetic and engaging man. He was wearing a gray suite and colorful tie; his face aglow, brow raised and glistening eyes opened wide; his voice was strong and confident. As an octogenarian (in his 80s) Jake was reflecting on the past while leaning toward a hope-filled future. He began: The first Sunday I came to Abingdon Baptist (1951) I didn t know anybody. But I looked across through the church and saw what I thought was a little angel. It ended up being Wanda Burgess who is now my wife, Wanda Lowe. I went over and introduced myself to her and told her that I needed to learn something about the Baptists and she said I sure acted like I did. We went on and shared life in this church; we were married in this church and our children were raised in this church and were all baptized in this church. Jake s crisp memories flowed from his heart most of them focusing on how the church worked together in life-giving ways to share Jesus s love with the world. One example he gave was how the young people developed a deep passion for being together, in this instance, around the blessing of music. In fact, the whole church threw their support behind a group called The Shalom Singers. Jake s voice quickened and eyes sparkled. He said it was such a positive and powerful experience that several of them went on to seminary as a result. An avid learner and teacher, Jake s most meaningful role at ABC was Sunday School Superintendent. He said, At that time they had a little trouble getting people who wanted to be teachers. So I said, If you didn t ask me to be a teacher, you couldn t be a teacher. This didn t set too well with some of the people at first, but they realized umm I told em, I said, I will replace you if you don t ask to. So they realized it was important to want to teach people because somebody had taught them and they owed it to other people to teach them. Before parting, Jake mentioned two other things: the first was his admiration for Charles Meade as a model of Christian dedication and generosity. His face lightened as he spoke of the personal effect Charles influence has been in his life. Second, he expressed deep gratitude to Reverend Pace for giving him his preaching notes along with points about how Rev. Pace learned to study in seminary. Jake wrapped it all up: This church is the greatest church in the world and has meant more to me and my wife than any other church ever could. Well said, Jake. Of course, by now some of you have realized that I encountered Jake Lowe through a video interview conducted around the 100 th anniversary. Jake went to be with the Lord in February of You may ask, Why are we spending time and effort on the past? What about the future? Isn t that where we should focus? Yes. We must focus on the future since that s where we will spend the rest of our time. However, before we go, we MUST gather some things from our past. We must identify what will be helpful. We mustn t leave without them. We MUST carry with us the power of Jake s devotion, courage, wisdom, his love for the next generation and more. They are all God s gifts to you, ABC. 5 Come together for worship, snacks and fellowship DownHome Worship st & 3rd Sunday evenings July 17 August 7 August 21 7:00pm Trula Harris, Jake & Shirley Turner Dana Duncan ~Come together for worship, snacks and fellowship~ It seems that school just ended and yet it s time again to begin to assemble school supply bags for those children in Washington County who are in need of these beginning supplies for the new school year. School starts in Washington County on August 10 th. As in the past, the Friends of Audrey & Jill WMU Circle is working with other churches to provide school supply bags to Stone Soup Food Pantry (SSFP) to be given out to customers with children as they pick up their food. Following is a listing of items that we include in the bags: 2 paks of 70 wide rules paper (or equivalent) 2 spiral bound paper 1 composition book 1 pencil sharpener 1 box of 24 crayons 2 erasers 1 pencil box 2 paks of 10 - #2 pencils (or equivalent) 1 pak of 10 pens (either black or blue ink) 1 pak colored pencils (usually come in paks of 10 or 12) 4 glue sticks 1 pair Fiskars scissors We would appreciate your help by either providing some of the items listed or providing a cash (check) donation and we will do the shopping. We will then assemble the bags and get them delivered to SSFO in time for them to distribute them before the first week of school.
