Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, To be a Baptist is to share in a history of controversy. The least of which is not our disposition on believers baptism at the very beginning of our faith tradition. The only way we practice Christianity that we call "Baptist" did not occur at one particular time or event but evolved over a number of years. It was an Anglican pastor named John Smyth, who, over time, became convinced that baptism was truly valid only if it was purely believer's baptism. That is, a baptism in response to an individual's confession of faith in Jesus Christ. Believe it or not, those first Baptists in ca. 1609, were baptized by what we affectionately call sprinkling. The name "Baptist" didn't emerge as a denominational designation until some 35 years later. Even when Baptists fore bearers emerged in Virginia years later, we were not exactly welcomed with open arms. We had ministers jailed for simply holding services without the approval of the official state-sponsored Anglican Church. Baptist pastors have been jailed and whole congregations divided over whether it was appropriate to sing hymns in worship or whether congregations should allow music produced by contraptions like pianos or organs. These debates bring a smile to our faces today but in times past, they were of the most wrights and dire of considerations. A modern day issue that is still debated among many believers is that of whether the scriptures permit the ordination of women as deacons or as professional clergy. My personal opinion is that God can call whomever God chooses to call to service. The whole subject of women's ordination is far to wide ranging to deal with in a newsletter column. In short (really short), the Greek word that is translated "deacon" literally means "servant" and both men and women are described as servants. Therefore, perhaps delineation of the sexes was not the apostle Paul's intent when he taught on the subject. Debate, therefore, is simply a part of who we are as Baptists. I want to thank our Deacon Council for their courage and grace when sometimes having to wade through some very sensitive issues. May we always keep the Christ, who alone is our salvation, before us.
