May God bless your generosity to Sacred Heart! Dear Parishioners, This week we will celebrate the Fourth of July and the independence of our nation. When we do, we will not simply be remembering something that happened two hundred and forty-two years ago. We will be living as citizens of the free and independent nation that began two hundred and forty-two years ago and that now has two hundred and forty-two years of history some of it good, some of it not so good. We were born or moved into this nation long after it began. We will depart from it long before it is over. While we are here, it is our responsibility to preserve its independence and uphold its finest ideals. Taking responsibility for the present reality of national independence is something akin to what we do each time we celebrate the Eucharist. We do not simply remember what happened two thousand years ago. We are responsible for making what happened two thousand years ago a present reality. When Jesus said, Do this in remembrance of me, he made us responsible not for repeating his passion, death and resurrection, but for making it present again and again throughout our lives. That is why private prayer is no substitute for the community s Eucharistic celebration (Mass). The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that as far as possible, citizens should take an active part in public life, and that patriotic activity calls for continual conversion so that as a nation we live in conformity with God s law, not our whims. It is our responsibility to see to it that the American history of this generation is on the good side of the historical ledger, not on the not so good side. Happy Fourth of July everyone! Fr. Our students continue to perform well. The Boys won a 1 st place grant of $1,500 and the Girls won a 2 nd place grant of $1,250. The Team is now preparing for the New England Regional Championship, July 12 th - 15 th. Those who qualify will advance to the National Championship in Greensboro, NC, July 23 rd - 29 th.
