2 ORDINARY TIME Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil A Scandalous Rule Richard Gaillardetz, Give Us This Day, November 2017 On this, the final feast of the liturgical year, we are invited to reflect on the dis nc ve shape and character of Christ s kingship. Some find this monarchical and even patriarchal language off-pu ng. Yet this feast reminds us that this king came to us from the cultural backwater of Galilee in the raiment of anonymity and poverty. He rules not as a tyrant but as a simple shepherd who, as Ezekiel foretold, will seek out the lost, bind up the injured, and heal the sick. The purpose of Christ s reign, St. Paul tells us, is to destroy all that would stand in the way of the redemp ve power of love, including death itself, so that God may be all in all. This strange king has brought into human history the first fruits of a transformed realm, one suffused with the healing shalom of God. Those who would dare call themselves disciples of Jesus and ci zens of this new kingdom must live according to the subversive rule of mercy, compassion, and hospitality. Moreover, what is true for the disciples of Jesus is no less true for nonbelievers. According to many scholars, Ma hew s famous judgment scene is actually concerned with the judgment of nonbelievers (the Gen les ) regarding their treatment of the followers of Jesus ( the least brothers of mine ). These Gen les too may find salva on, but only by living according to the same scandalous rule of God s reign: they too must feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, and clothe the naked. (John 18: 36, 37) With today s feast of Christ the King, we bring the Church s liturgical year to a close. After 33 weeks of Ordinary Time and green vestments, we begin anew next week with the Season of Advent and bluish purple vestments. In the new liturgical year, the Lectionary of Sunday readings will be from the Gospel of Mark Cycle B. For this reason, we reflect this week on the Advent season. The Advent Season 2015 All Saints Press Marking the beginning of the Church s liturgical year, the four weeks of Advent lead us to the celebration of Christmas. Advent s familiar sights and sounds stir in us a readiness to receive our savior, while sharpening our sense of the world s need for redemption and of the great mystery of God s becoming human for us. Advent is a Latin word meaning the coming or arrival. The season of Advent is a time to prepare to celebrate the three arrivals of Christ: his lowly birth in the past, his mysterious coming to the Christian community in the present, and his promised return as our judge at the end of time. Constantly Born in Us Sr. Maria Boulding, OSB The Advent we keep is not a poetic make-believe, or a nostalgic historical pageant, or even an exercise in remembering our roots, although this might have value. The coming of God in Christ still continues, and will be consummated in a coming and a gift beyond the stretch of our hope. We are an Advent people. The season of Advent celebrates in symbolic form a reality of our own lives and of all humanity s destiny with God, because he who came in weakness at Bethlehem is he who will come again.

The Works of Mercy (An occasional series in which Pope Francis speaks about the corporal and spiritual works of mercy) Welcoming the Stranger Encouragement Pope Francis, Speech to the Bishops of the United States, Washington, DC, September 23, 2015 The Church in the United States knows like few others the hopes present in the hearts of immigrants. From the beginning you have learned their languages, promoted their cause, made their contributions your own, defended their rights, helped them to prosper, and kept alive the flame of their faith. Even today, no American institution does more for immigrants than your Christian communities. Now you are facing a stream of Latin immigration that affects many of your dioceses. Not only as the bishop of Rome, but also as a pastor from the South, I feel the need to thank and encourage you. Perhaps it will not be easy for you to look into their soul; perhaps you will be challenged by their diversity. But know that they also possess resources meant to be shared. So do not be afraid to welcome them. Offer them the warmth of the love of Christ and you will unlock the mystery of their heart. I am certain that, as so often in the past, these people will enrich America and its church.

5 LIVING OUR FAITH Witnesses for Our Time Dorothy Day Servant of God, Cofounder of the Catholic Worker ( ) She is remembered on November 29. By crying out unceasingly for the rights of the workers, of the poor, of the des tute, we can throw our pebble in the pond and be confident that its ever widening circle will reach around the world. Dorothy Day, who died on November 29, 1980, was widely regarded as the radical conscience of the American Catholic Church. A convert to Catholicism, she had spent her youth engaged in the struggle for social change and a restless search for love and community. The great turning point came in 1926, while living on Staten Island with a man she deeply loved, when she discovered that she was pregnant. Her daughter s birth became the catalyst for a profound conversion, as she decided to have her child bap zed a step she followed in 1927, though it meant a painful separa on from her daughter s father, when he refused to marry her. A er mee ng a Frenchman, Peter Maurin, in 1932 she found a way to integrate her faith with her passion for jus ce and the cause of the poor. Together they launched The Catholic Worker, a paper that propagated the social message of the Gospel. This gave birth to a lay movement, combining voluntary poverty, hospitality, and the works of mercy. Offering a prophe c witness for peace and nonviolence, Day and her companions were repeatedly arrested for acts of civil disobedience. All the while her ac vism was rooted in a disciplined life of prayer and sacrament. THE GIVING TREE The Giving Tree Ministry provides OLMC parishioners an opportunity to share your blessings at Christmas time. Once again your generosity is needed for homeless and migrant families. There are special needs this year for strollers with baskets and Pack n Plays (a bed and playpen combination). These items are a tremendous help for the working families who travel with their jobs. They are available at Walmart, Target, Costco or online. They arrive boxed and may be a problem to bring to Church. If so, the Knights of Columbus will be glad to pick them up at your home. Please call Donna Pierson at to arrange for pick up. The Christmas Giving Tree will be placed in the narthex beginning Saturday, November 25th. Sunday December 17th will be the last day to place gifts under the tree. Our gifts for the Giving Tree will support the Guadalupe Catholic Social Services of Immokalee and the Center of Hope in Nokomis.
