2 ADVENT Keeping God at Arm s Length Advent Calendar Mary DeTurris Poust, Daily Re lections for Advent and Christmas: Waiting in Joyful Hope Why do you let us wander, O Lord, from your ways, and harden our hearts so that we fear you not? (Isa 63:17) Re lection: It s funny how we humans can ind ways to blame God for everything, even our own indifference. Why do you let us wander, O Lord, from your ways... we hear in today s irst reading. Even when we harden our hearts and distance ourselves from God, we act as though God should be chasing us down, making us stay, like petulant children who need to be forced to obey our parents. But that is not how God s love works. God also gives us free will and allows us to make our own choices, even if the choice is to keep him at arm s length. Today, as we begin our Advent journey, we have a chance to start over, to re lect on the ways we have pushed God away. Be watchful! Be alert! the Gospel of Mark reminds us, making clear that we need to get our spiritual house in order. Now is the time. This is our season. God has not abandoned us in the desert or left us to wander without a guide. He waits, patiently, for us to choose him willingly, for us to recognize that when we ind ourselves lost and faltering it is because we have abandoned God, not the other way around. On this irst day of Advent, we have a choice, as we do every day, every moment. Do we plan to go it alone, or will we anchor ourselves to the One who will never leave us? Meditation: Stop everything you are doing and think about the last few months of your life. Were there times when you felt the way the people of Israel did in the reading from Isaiah? Have you felt abandoned by God, adrift in the chaos of life? Now re lect on your spiritual journey. Did the times you felt alone coincide with the times you didn t make time for prayer, didn t make time for God? Today, as we take the irst step on our path through Advent, let us recommit ourselves to being alert to the Lord moving through our days, even when we are going in the wrong direction. Prayer: Dear Lord, we know that we are not always attentive to you or grateful for the ways you give meaning to our days. Her blog can be found at The Liturgical Year The liturgical year, also known as the church year, consists of the cycle of liturgical seasons that determines when feast days, including celebrations of saints, are to be observed, and which portions of Scripture are to be read either in an annual cycle or in a cycle of several years. Following a decision of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Church adopted a three-year cycle of readings for Sundays and a twoyear cycle for weekdays. This year, we will be in Cycle B with readings predominantly from the Gospel of Mark. The liturgical cycle begins with the First Sunday of Advent. It divides the year into a series of seasons, each with their own mood, theological emphases, and modes of prayer, which can be signified by different ways of decorating churches, colors of vestments, scriptural readings, themes for preaching and even different traditions and practices often observed personally or in the home. Advent Prayer Christ, we await your coming, and we respond to your invita on to journey to the holy mountain, where there is no harm or ruin, and where the lion can lie down with the lamb. Help us to be like John the Bap st so we may recognize and announce your love to a world in darkness. Spark our crea vity so we may create the way to your peace and jus ce, working with our sisters and brothers to open new vistas, to promote new ways of being in community and in communion. This special grace was conferred on her through the grace of God in an cipa on of the redemp on. The Immaculate Concep on celebrates the Blessed Mother as a pure and spotless vessel designed for the privilege and responsibility of carrying the Son of God into the world. We hail Mary in faith and prayer because she is full of grace and because the Lord is with her. In other words, Mary was filled with God well before the Messiah was conceived in her womb. While we honor Mary for the privilege of being the spotless virgin, we also strive to be like her in becoming faithful bearers of Christ in the world. As we strive for purity and integrity in word and ac on, we give birth to God more effec vely in the world. 5 LIVING OUR FAITH Training Underway Eleven members of our parish are now well on their way in their training to become Stephen Ministers. We are blessed to have a very dynamic group of people who have answered the call to minister to those in need. As their training progresses, they are learning to provide one-toone Chris an care to individuals facing life challenges or difficul es. Their training comes by way of reading printed materials, lecture, and role playing. According to one trainee, I knew this was going to be helpful informa on for me, but it has by far exceeded my expecta ons. It s just great! I look forward to the next training session every week. As training con nues, upcoming topics include: asser veness, maintaining boundaries, crisis theory and prac ce, and confiden ality. Please keep the trainees in your prayers, that they will con nue to sharpen their current caregiving skills and develop new ones through future training sessions. OLMC Ladies Christmas Luncheon Don t miss out on this one! The Luncheon will be held at Mama Leone s in Osprey, Thursday December 7th, 12:00 PM. We are accepting gently used items for the sale now during parish business hours. THE GIVING TREE The Giving Tree Ministry provides OLMC parishioners an opportunity to share your blessings at Christmas time. Once again your generosity is needed for homeless and migrant families. There are special needs this year for strollers with baskets and Pack n Plays (a bed and playpen combination). These items are a tremendous help for the working families who travel with their jobs. They are available at Walmart, Target, Costco or online. They arrive boxed and may be a problem to bring to Church. If so, the Knights of Columbus will be glad to pick them up at your home. Please call Donna Pierson at to arrange for pick up. The Prayer Shawl Ministry Next meeting Friday December 8, :30-9:30am The Christmas Giving Tree still has tags for you to select. Sunday December 17th will be the last day to place gifts under the tree. Our gifts for the Giving Tree will support the Guadalupe Catholic Social Services of Immokalee and the Center of Hope in Nokomis. Everyone is welcome! If you have not yet participated in our Shawl Ministry, please come and find out more about this rewarding ministry. These beautiful shawls are easy to make and greatly appreciated by the receiver. Work on them at home and at your pace. If you know of someone who is ill, home bound, having surgery, in a nursing home or assisted living, has lost a loved one recently, or anyone who could use a warm loving embrace, please let me know or inform someone at the reception desk.
